What is the strange Croatian colony on the edge of the known world? Today, we're going to discuss the history of the Croatians who made a home for themselves on the very Southern tip of South America, a region so distant and remote that it bears significance among all European overseas settlements.
Let me know your thoughts on the history of these Croatians in South America and other Slavs in the region. Thanks for watching!
Be sure to participate in the Masaman channel census! Full analysis will be out within a couple of weeks.

However if you keep the results tab open and simply refresh the page, you should be able to view the results in real time. Either way, a full analysis will be out within a couple weeks so don't worry!

I'm an expat from the States living in Argentina. One day an older gentleman from my neighborhood approached me happily on the street while I was out shopping and started speaking Croatian to me. When he realized that I didn't understand him he quickly changed to Spanish and said "You're not from Croatia? I was told that you are from Croatia.". "Sorry sir, I'm not. I'm from the US." "Oh," he said sadly, turned and walked away. It broke my heart!

Chile has the largest number of descendants of Croats in Latin America and the fifth largest in the world (Betwen 250.000- 400.00 aprox), many important characters in Chile have been or are descendants of Croats, and their surnames are well known, such as Luksic, Tomicic, Papic, Mirosevic, Tudor , Tomic, Baburizza, Ivanovic, Boric, Prokurica, Vodanovic, Goic, etc etc in fact in Punta Arenas that has a large number of descendants of Croats, its mayor is called Cristian Radonic. Even my cousin is the grandson of Croats, his last name is Kovacevic, Viva Chile and Viva Croatia, luck in the world cup, greetings from Chile to all the Croats of the world.

When Europeans migrated to other parts of world, they didn't do it to live from social benefits, but to build those places with their hard work. Croats are one of those examples.

My Great uncle and other relatives moved to Argentina from Brac (not exactly sure when). I have no specific info other than they kept their surname. A few of the few surviving relatives in USA have stayed in contact. I think a lot of Bracians and maybe all Dalmatians have some wanderlust from being a seafaring people. I know that once while tuna fishing in the Pacific, I felt an urge to just keep going to the other side and was sad to I know it was just a daydream.

There are so many Croats in Chile! Yes, most of them came in the first wave to Punta Arenas, but after that, many established in Antofagasta, Iquique, Santiago and Valparaiso. The sea-faring blood of Dalmatians explains in part why they liked living in ports. As someone already said, most Chileans Croats come from the island of Brac, but also from nearby islands like Korcula or Sipan...basically, they’re all distant cousins. I live in Santiago and Croat influence is felt everwhere, in street names, politicians, TV personalities, the Croat Stadium, etc. My husband’s grandfather was born in Sipan and came here after WWII (he fought the Nazis but didn’t like Tito). Last year we visited his hometown of Sipanska Luka, his house is still there. Such a beautiful place! I loved visiting a place I had heard so much about and meeting the people there.

I am a Croat. And a couple of years ago I've met a lot of my relatives from Chile, and from Argentina. Most of them are not my relatives any more, since they moved more then 100 years ago. But minority of them are, since they moved during and after WWII. Nice people, but I highly doubt they consider themselves to be distinctive from local population. They know where they came from, and they (somewhat) support Croatia in sports. And that's about it. And that is the way it should be. Know your heritage, but adopt to local culture. I can totally respect that.

But that case is an exception and might be the only reminiscence i can remember, because all the other places like parks, streets, stadiums, schools, etc. are named either Croatia or croatian. For example, in the first city i said (Antofagasta), one of its main avenues is called Republic of Croatia and it was renamed with the presence of Stjepan Mesić in 2006. Greetings!

I am an Argertinian who lives in Spain. I have Croatian ascentry (as you can tell by my name), but also Italian, Galician, Castilian and even Charruan (is it correctly spelled?) ascentry. I always felt like a mix-up and in my house we have a very mixed culture even though here in Spain I only live with my parents and brothers. If there is one thing I can feel proud of is the embracement of the best of the several cultures my family is based on.

For me this video is especially interesting and enjoyable as I was personally in the Croatian Club in Puntas Arenas. During 1990-ties I lived for several years in Santiago de Chile. Every Sunday we would go to the Yugoslav Club, which later on was renamed the Croatian Club. The club was completely renovated in early nineties. The club has has extensive sports facilities, including a soccer field and a swimming pool. The restaurant offered full course meals, The waiters always served with white gloves. It was a classy place with music and singing. I was told that overseas South Slavs were the first promoters of the idea to create a South Slavs State. And that the Slavs of Chile were the greatest enthusiasts. It is too bad that Yugoslavia fell apart and that those problems came also to us who live overseas. With love from a Slavic Canadian.

The Peruvian Sofia Mulanovich (Croatians roots) She is the first Peruvian surfer ever to win a World Surf League World Championship Tour event (ex ASP) and the first Latin American ever to win the World Title In 2004, she won three out of the six World Championship Tour events, and finished the season as Absolute World Champion. Sofia is the only one Latin-american surfer to win 2 ISA World Championships. Sofia won the ISA Championships, 2004 in Salinas-Ecuador and 2019 in Miyazaki-Japan.[4] Her main sponsor is Roxy. Mulánovich was inducted into Surfing Hall of Fame in 2007 due to her achievement in 2004 and 2005. In 2004, she became the first South American and Latin American (man or woman) to ever win the world title. This actually helps my friend from Argentina his Father was born in Argentina and his parents were of Italian decent while his mother was 2nd generation Argentinian and she said to me (since I come from Former Yugoslavia) that he cane from a country around there and moved for a better job... I was confused because I’ve never heard of any Slavic migration to there I’ve heard to other European countries and the Americas.... this truly helps as the chances are the father was from Croatia... meaning he is of Croatian decent (also what was the father last name I do not know as she said he changed it but he did have a Slavic name for Croatia being Petar) interesting I cracked the case!

Okay, I know this is nitpicky, but as a Croat, the way you Americans pronounce ć (or ignore it completely by writing names with a c) is pretty mind boggling for me. The letter ć is easy for you peeps to pronounce. It's like saying the "ch" part of Chile, church, chicken etc. It's not (example Radić) RadiC, it's RadiCH. Same works for the letter č, but you gotta hear the difference to understand that pronunciation.

A couple corrections regarding some common mistakes; Croatia isn't a Eastern European country in spite of it being a Slavic country with a communist past, but is rather located in South Central Europe with only 42% of its land lying within the Balkan Peninsula. Also, the number of croats in Latin America far exceeds what you mentioned. According to the most recent academic analysis, approximately one million "croats" account for the Chilean population of today, exempli gratia. It was a good and informative video, nonetheless.

Speaking of the Croatia, there is a very interesting history of the Dutch sailors. In the 1500s, some Dutch sailors named Jan Jansz Weltevree is recorded to have landed in Korea by accident on his way to Japan. He ended up adopting into Korean society and had two children. Twenty years later, another crew of Dutch sailors landed in Korea, meeting Weltevree. This story is well documented in Hendrick Hamel's journals. They gave birth to perhaps the first mixed-race Koreans because the contact with Europe was very limited. In fact, I myself have 0.1% European DNA detected. I personally think this story is very interesting. Could you perhaps do some research on it and make a video? Thank you very much!

If you were to take tests from multiple different companies, you'd probably find that yes, the main lineages of yours would still be there, but most likely in widely varying amounts from test to test, and some of the more minor lineages might be missing entirely. Well, considering that 54 million people vote for her and there's no financial crime, yes, it was a coup. Who went to streets were right wingers (or just people that have not cared about politics in their entire life) and people who voted in the candidate who get the second place, that one who owned a helicopter with 500 kf of cocaine. People who wanted to impose right wing policies in the economy, harming the poorer part of the population. These people are the responsible for the current state of affairs in Brazil, they ruined the economy, they ended the democracy here just because they hated to see the low classes being able to go up in the social ladder. They claim to fight corruption, but all their candidates are the historic most corrupt ones.

Just like americans, some of us are, some of us aren't. I am, and in the region I live most of us are, in other regions like the north, europeans descendants are a minority. It's hard to know exact numbers because the goverment doesn't take racial census, but the estimates are around 60% european population. Although I think that percentage is falling mostly due to immigration from bordering countries were the population is more amerindian.

It's irrelevant. Few of them immigrated to Latin America.

Since the video was made one of them became president of Chile: Gabriel Boric (from Punta Arenas). Nestor Kirchner mother's last name was Ostoic (a family from the same city) as mentioned in the video. So they've had huge influence in both countries already

Just a decade ago "Central Europe" was a well established and commonly used term, and today Europe is split in two, not based upon geography, but upon how many middle eastern migrants want to stay in a particular area. 😒

Croatia have 1000s of islands and some parts are rocky and it's hard to live as farmer or just a fisherman on island. A lot of people left Croatia for that reasons. Ofcourse times change and people dont live just from farming today. But I imagine life was hard on the islands before.
