When I was a kid, I bought a "Christian electronica" album from an "ex-gay" pastor who went by Vegaschurchboy called Deep (2002). The music was all nightclub music because he wanted to reach those people from his past with his music. I liked it. Everyone else in the church van was like "okay, we listened to it for a few minutes for you... now we're gonna put normal music back on." I really should upload it to KZbin since I don't see any mirrors online anywhere. It's not the greatest album ever, but it's catchy at times. Songs like "beautiful people acting ugly", that no person is inherently ugly, they're just acting ugly. And a lot of people who are carrying a lot of shame for past decisions really resonate with that message.

That feels like the common story. A lot of the music I found sounded a little rough around the edges, but I think there's a lot of charm in that. I think it's worth preserving! Go for it!

I’m a Christian New Zealander and I’m a MASSIVE Acid House, Jungle, and Psy-Trance fan. As a teen I went down the alternative music route simply because mainstream hip hop and R&B was turning very inappropriate. UK Garage, instrumental UK Grime, and Jungle were my go-tos back in the early 2000s. Not having any peers who enjoyed this music as much as I did made me feel a little lonely, both inside and outside of the church here in Auckland. But I’m so glad that I continued to research these genres and build my collection of life changing bangers. They have brought me so much joy over the years ❤❤❤

I am very familiar with N-Soul Records via their Nitro Praise albums while I was growing up. All of my peers, church and while attending private Christian schools were into rap and R&B, while I was obviously into the rave scene. I am familiar with groups like Paradigm Shift and Rhythm Saints--the latter being more or less in the House genre. But it even goes further with the song, "Fall Down (Spirit of Love)" from Gospel recording artist, Tramaine Hawkins (wife of late husband Walter Hawkins) back in 1985, in which that song in particular would be featured in the Gospel Remixes album in 2001. Hawkins also had associated acts with The Jackson 5. The song "Testify" from Gospel recording group, Donald Lawrence & the Tri-City Singers got remixes from House DJ, Junior Vasquez.

You need to get into the World Wide Message Tribe, they were a massive part of Christian youth culture over here in the UK. The Real Thing even managed to get into the Billboard Dance charts in the US.

Oh oh oh, at the same time there was also a flowering Christian Industrial and Industrial Metal scene. Do you know Clayton aka Celldweller? He actually has his roots from the Christian Industrial Metal scene, his first band Circle of Dust was under contract with the Christian music label REX Records and sold in those bookstores mentioned in the video.

I really expected you to mention Raving Loonatics, that was my introduction to the techno scene in 2001, they (might) be actually good? The jury is still out, you should decide for yourself. Yes, they are a Christian band, they literally mix sermons into their tracks, which 3/10 times do actually go pretty hard. Their best tracks in my opinion: Pounding Music Culture (First on the CD, gotta start strong) Bound (The buildup is important, give it time) Into The Sun (This was my favorite by them)

Christian dance music definitely isn't as uncommon as you'd think. One album I've had for ages is Exodus by Andy Hunter. The first track from that album (Go) has been used in a bunch of games and movie trailers, but if you actually listen to the rest of the album, it's all about praisin' jebus and whatnot. I only realized that many years after I'd gotten the CD!

Really unexpected topic. I think I stumbled upon faith massive before. Sounds good! One of my all time favourites is Gabriel (garage mix) by Roy Davis. It’s pretty religious, but not overly. Wonder if it came from a similar place. But you know house is black music and so is gospel, so there is bound to be some overlap. Calling out by Sophie Lloyd is a banger too! Can you do artist feature about MUSE? They have a lot of credits for old VNs for the PC-98, X68000 etc. My favorites are X-Girl, Akiko Gold and Lam-Mal. In the same way the US has States, the UK has Constituent "Countries" (misleading name), of which England is only one of 4. The rest of the UK/Britain isn't shown: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland. I suppose the US equivalent would be showing only California when saying here is the US. When I was a kid Christian bookstores were where we picked up Skillet and Relient K CDs. Plus they played veggie tales on a tv in one corner so it was alright. I think the worst genre of Christian music I've heard is trap, which has all the aesthetic cues of trap but all about loving Jesus. It's hard to listen to and it's not good counterculture. Weird choice.

If you want a cool Christian band I'd check out Audio Adrenaline - Underdog and Some Kind of Zombie are both albums I think slap, despite not being active in the church anymore. Very preachy lyrics but the musicianship is solid.

nope. I was raised in a christian environment but quickly exited when I was able to. edit to add: I suppose that could potentially add an odd framing. There is people making christian versions of almost every music genre and some of then are surprisingly good.
