I love how meta this scene is, the staff trying to court Elizabeth while at the same time telling the viewer: yes, we know it's a difference, but we all have to accept it and move on. I'll imagine they'll do something similar for the season 5 premiere

Ngl, it did throw me off with how they jump around with the timeline, like 'wtf???' Cuz this is 1964- we just had a scene with Claire Foy and Matt Smith; she had just sent the letter to Jackie Kennedy after the assassination in 1963. Maybe if Olivia Coleman went from the 80s to present, it could work better.

The best way to interpret this sort of cast change is to think "oh they've just realised how old they're getting". I've personally noticed that as I get older I don't notice changes until I look in the mirror one day and realise I've gotten older.

Wholeheartedly agreed my good friend, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. For me, Season 3 is the best season of The Crown as, from the get-go, we see that this season is about Elizabeth understanding and discovering her identity. By the end of the season, that identity has been uncovered by her and for her, through her trials and tribulations - that's why the music of the score that plays at the start of the season is the same music that plays at the end of the season, only at the end, the music isn't as timid and drowsy as it is at the start, but more grandiose and emotionally rewarding. It's an absolutely rivetting and masterful season of television, and I hope more people pick up on its excellence someday.

Olivia excellently portrayed the Queen's pain, fear and anger. However, I felt her portrayal lacked some of the Queen's sense of humor. Her lines in this scene might be humorous, but there were few of those this season, and she looks genuinely hurt saying them. Nothing wrong with that; the scene is brilliant. In general she is just a little bit...stricter as the Queen than the real ER2 was, I think.

@@zacmumblethunder7466 I don't know if I'd put it that strongly, but I don't vehemently disagree either. There's also the eye colour. Maybe they'll do something similar for the season 5 opening scene were Imelda Staunton is now the queen 👑 and she looks at a family photo album full of pictures of Claire Foy and Olivia Coleman and remarks about how she has accepted her age and has decided to stop dyeing her hair and embrace her grey hair as I think her majesty stopped dyeing it in the early 1990's which is exactly the time period depicted in season 5, although in the 1980's she was still dyeing it but there was a grey streak at each side of both her ears.
