@@elizabethmoore2684 people seem to think that age makes a difference when it comes to the mental weight a parent has on their child. Certainly, he was 21, a fully-fledged adult - does it make it any easier, to hear your mother telling you that your voice doesn't matter, not just to a country that he'll have to rule, but to her? It doesn't matter if you're 11 or 21, or even 51, your parents are your idols. I know a lot of this show, whilst historical, is based on secrets or rumours, but if the way that the Royal Children were raised is remotely accurate, then there's a serious problem. I have a lot of respect for the Queen, but she should've realised that raising a child properly is just as big a responsibility as the crown itself. Its no wonder at all that he and Diana ended up the way they did. Especially if they are expected to rule when she's gone, like Charles (though it is likely he'll make way for William given that the Queen has aged quite well).

I do love the use of Carlo over the end credits, and not just because it's a funny song. The song mocks the idea of Charles being a Welsh prince by imagining him as a neighbourhood welsh lad, which is essentially what Charles desires by the end in this depiction of events. It takes a song of mockery and sort of turns it into a sad fantasy, which is really clever so props to whoever decided that.

I've been looking forward to seeing how "The Crown" would portray Charles's situation. He is so misunderstood I feel. Yes Diana was not treated well in their marriage. But I feel it was the institution that did this to both of them. Charles was forced to find a wife of noble burden. I'm glad Camilla and Charles finally got each other. Their love survived 50 years of strong resistance. They deserve it. William and Harry have a strong relationship with their father.

The institution forced them to get married, but they did not force him to then cheat on and mistreat his wife. There is no excuse for that, no matter how unhappy you are. Personally, I side with the tutor. Charles was studying at university level so there is an expectation that he should an independent learner. I'm sure he was a given a reading list before he started and should have done a little research before going to class. Imagine going to an English university to learn the language but not know even know anything about the country. Charles not knowing who the Prince of Wales was is the equivalent of taking a course on the Tudors and having no clue who Anne Boleyn was. the reason the tutor was so upset with Charles is because he was given the title prince of wales, but really he was not deserving of this title, because the last real prince of wales (Llywelyn) was slaughtered by the English, and his head was on for display on the tower of London, so I don't blame the tutor for being slightly cold towards Charles.

Wrong - Last Prince of Wales was Owain Glyndwr 1400 - 1415. He annulled all the English laws over the Kingdom Of WALES (C.1057), and this is why Henry the 8th who was of Welsh descent had to annex Wales under the laws of Wales act. If it was already conquered and under English law, there wouldnt have been a need for annexation.
@Tlevids2 жыл бұрын
@@WalesTheTrueBritons Sort of true - Owain Glyndwr was Prince of Wales as recognised by France, Scotland, and Castile if not by England. But the reason Henry VIII needed to pass acts in order to legally assimilate Wales into England doesn't have anything to do with Glyndwr - it's because Edward I, after his conquest of Wales, did not entirely abolish Welsh (Hywel Dda) and Marcher laws under the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284. Wales thus became a Principality of the English crown but remained its own legal entity - as did the Marcher lordships also with their own legal differences from England - until the 16th century.

The Queen was harsh yes, but she has been trained for the job, experience it first hand the frustrations it creates and the cost to her personal life and family. Charles in this case it's showing signs of individuality, like the Duke of Windsor before him, and that's one thing as future king that he can't develope or he must understand that there is no point since he won't be able to express any of them in public ever without a risk for the Crown, it has been drilled in the Queen that individuality in a monarch leads to unsavory consequences like the abdication, i don't blame her for been harsh, he is sensitive person and nice words don't always do the job, it's tough love for the better.

@@annickroussemrou1064 You also have to recognize this is a dramatization. We have no idea what was actually said. This is just a show in the end. For all we know, the real Queen Elizabeth said different things. We simply don't know. And even in the episode itself, it wasn't cruel what was said, she is trying to stamp down a possible rebellion in her son who will one day be King. Charles is heir to the throne, he cannot afford rebellion and stepping out of line. In her mind, she is seeing possible repeats of her Uncle David who abdicated the throne and caused a big scandal. She is firmly putting her foot down in this moment because it is necessary. Charles pushing boundaries in this story, and unilaterally doing so behind everyone's backs, IS DANGEROUS, he doesn't just represent himself, he represents an institution that is always living in a precarious situation. Elizabeth's father in the story wasn't "cruel" to her because he didn't need to be, she wasn't the sort of person who stepped out of line, she did her duty and what was expected of her. There is not a difference between Welsh or British. We are British, but we are not English, it’s just Americans tend to think British and English are interchangeable. Scottish people are British too, and so are Northern Irish people. I am Welsh, and I am British. I am not English. I personally don’t have an issue with identifying as both, however you do get some Celtic people who strongly self identify as their Celtic origin only and not British at all. Some Celtic people feel that England doesn’t hold their best interest at heart and would like to break up the Union. There are many cultural issues between England and Wales historically though. The English government instilled something in Welsh schools called the Welsh knot. Essentially, if a child was caught speaking Welsh in school they would have to wear the welsh knot around their neck. It would be passed around all day as the next child was caught speaking Welsh, and whomever had it on at the end of the school day would get the head masters cane. They tried to kill our language.

This episode made me empathize with Charles so much, and it really saddened me to seen the Queen pass on the message to her son to harden himself and not allow his true self to emerge. We know from seasons 1 and 2 that it was difficult for her at times - denying her sister happiness, mourning in silence after her father’s death, etc - so it was very sad to see that she taught Charles this lesson in such a cold and callous way, rather than from a place of empathy. Should he be cautious about how he expresses his political opinions? Of course! But she could have said this differently.

I honestly always felt sympathy for Charles. I think he’s deeply misunderstood. Some of that has been of his own making but a lot of it was he just had a lot of terrible things happen to him. He was raised by strict, cold parents who mainly weren’t even around, and he’s a sensitive person. He was forbidden to marry the woman he loved and was forced into a marriage not of his choosing. He tried to make it work at first but Diana and Charles were not well suited on many levels. The crowd idolized her and then when the affairs started becoming public, the public never forgave Charles or Camilla. I think all three were victims and while some more blame can be given to Charles and Camilla, Diana has to foot some of it as well. She was emotionally manipulative and worked the press to her advantage. Saying she felt Charles shouldn’t be king was a low blow. Her death was a tragedy but as much as I blame the media, the public and she herself as a manipulator of the press shoulder some of that as well. Charles was the one royal who behaved with real respect and dignity with Diana’s death. He understood what he needed to do as a father and he instinctively knew what the public expected of him, and he did an excellent job. Charles is rather shy and awkward, and that, on top of the failed marriage that was not of his choosing, is why people dislike him but I always felt some sympathy at least for him.

I am very suprised no one mentioned about Llywelyn ap Gruffudd properly. To put it simply he was Prince of Gwynedd the dominant rulers of Wales for most of its pre-conquest history (there were other Princes/Kings in Wales of other kingdoms). He in particular was one of few to have been Prince of all Wales effectively bringing the other princes to accept him as overlord. He fell out with King Edward 1st of England and was later hunted down by English soldiers had his head put on a spike and it was left to rot at tower of London for 15 years. As such England conquered independent Wales. Many of his relatives revolted against England and claimed the title of Prince of Wales the last of which was Owain Glyndwr of the rival and former Royal house of Powys (another Welsh Kingdom) in 1400-1415 when the revolt was defeated and he fled into hiding.

The Wealas began referring to themselves as Cymry (Countryman) and again found themselves at England’s mercy when they were invaded, their last native royal Llywelyn ap Gruffydd was killed by Englands King Edward 1 (Edward Longshanks). Wales tried to set up a welsh parliament under Owain Glyndwr and again was invaded by England and killed. Later the culture and language was made illegal forcing Wales to abandon its cultural heritage. Effectively making Wales England’s first colony. Resources were plundered for the industrial revolution (as were all colonies) Schools were segregated from 1900 between what little welsh speaking families were left and English speaking until the late 90s and Welsh language became part of the education curriculum in 2000 - it’s always been a case of us and them…. And because of Wales’ defeat they have been effectively written off the global map, where as Scotland fended off Edward 1 and formed the U.K. with England. Look at the U.K. flag 🇬🇧, that flag represents England, Scotland and Ireland (before the south of Ireland gained independence) Wales, isn’t even featured on the Union flag. It’s been a bumpy ride England and Wales, and while the establishment still treats Wales like shit, their Welsh culture is on the rise again (likely due to the language being made part of their secondary school curriculum in 2000) us and them.

Just like with Bavaria in Germany the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish communities have their own unique cultural characteristics and histories vastly different from but also intricately linked with those of England’s. The United Kingdom is not a uniformly country, it’s a union of different nations operating under one flag and one Sovreign. With this in mind nationalists and separatists is something to be expected.

Thanks for doing this reaction video. It is very interesting to get your perspective on it. I am a fluent Welsh speaker so I can help you a bit. The title Tywysog Cymru is indeed Welsh. Tywysog pronounced TuhWUSSog means prince and Cymru pronounced KUMree is the Welsh word for Wales. So it means Prince of Wales in Welsh, you don't need a word for "of" here in Welsh. It is understood by the positions of the words. The tutor and his wife are from two different parts of Wales. He speaks the northern dialect and she the southern. You comment on the word shattered but unfortunately,this is one of the few mistranslations in the subtitles. The words used are actually "ar goll" which mean "lost". The story is essentially true. Prince Charles was sent to Wales to learn some Welsh, but everyone knows he doesn't know much and that it was just a PR exercise. As you'll have noticed Welsh is a very different language from English. It is descended from the speech of the Ancient Britons who lived here before the angles and saxons brought Old English to Britain from Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire.

Once, working in Wales with some native-speakers, I asked to be taught some Welsh (big mistake!) "Toch dien pob Saes*", one son of Glyndwr eagerly proffered. (I'm a bit sketchy on the spelling, look you) "¿Que?" "All English are w*nkers" came the gleeful translation. Slightly stung, I mulled the phrase over. I realised that 'Saes' was short for 'Saesneg', which like the Scottish 'Sassenach' means 'English'. I already knew that 'Pob hwyl' means 'all the best', so 'pob' = 'all'. That left 'toch' and 'dien'. One of those words must mean 'w*nker'. Pondering Prince Charles, I fell around laughing. His coat of arms as Prince of Wales is three white feathers (curious enough) encircled by a crown at their stems, and bearing the simple motto: 'Ich Dien' Hahahahahaha: could it possibly BE that the motto of the Prince of Wales is: 'I'm a w*nker'?? Sadly, that possibility is just TOO priceless. For some reason, even more inexplicable than the three white feathers (cowardice?), the motto of the Prince of Wales is in German (why???), and means 'I serve'. ...not as fast as Nick Kyrgios I'm guessing, but I understand that Charles DOES play a mean game o' Tennis. *I've just now looked it up and learnt that the accustomed phrase is spelled: "Twch dyn pob Saes", and is more traditionally translated as "All Englishmen are a*$eholes". 'S there, Mr Welshy-Welshman - ya didn't even now your own language! >*tsk*

The jeers were because 'Wales' was still part of England...... they wanted Independence -- thankfully, they got it! Can I add something to your very comprehensive view (you might not believe this!) In my lifetime (many moons ago!), children who were growing up in rural areas of Wales, & only spoke Welsh at home, were forbidden to speak their Mother Tongue outside the home......they had to use English; even teachers -- also Welsh-speaking -- in village schools, had to teach in English! I don't know if this was postwar paranoia of the ENGLISH Government, but with independence came the revival of the old language.....if you were very privileged, your parents sent you to a Welsh school, so you grew up bi-lingual -- like Ellis James, Aneurin Barnard, etc 💔 Thank you for your lovely video! 🙏🌈🙏🏽

I just LOVED this episode. It's very obvious that Charles was/is someone who loves the arts, and mostly acting [at that time]. Cultural sensitivity and mores are STILL at the top of the list, and mostly importantly as the "Prince of Wales". His tutor gave him a royal "dressing down" that caused me to even wince!! The Queen herself coldly "dressed down" Charles upon his return. I'm sure that he longed for a hug and kiss at bedtime; a connection that all children yearn for and yet, NOT from his Queen! So very sad. :'(

English is a Germanic language and Welsh is a Celtic language, the only common factor that Modern English has with Celtic languages is their French loan words, and words that were blended in by Early Britonic-which were the Celtic aborigines of Britain before the Angles and Saxons landed on the eastern shores.

'Twysog Cymru' means Prince of Wales in Welsh but not everyone thinks Charles has a right to the title. Wales did not join the UL voluntarily but was conquered by England before the UK even existed. There was an attempt to destroy the culture. Scotland and Ireland had it worse but all oppression is bad, and it's only three years after Aberfan. English people generally don't know about Welsh history and can cause offence without trying. The tutor is a member of Plaid Cymru, the Welsh national party. He doesn't hate Charles personally. Charles doesn't have a clue what people are protesting about.He is well meaning I think but a bit of a clot. Marianne

There is a lot of resentment because of things England forced on the Welsh, eg, they tried destroying the Welsh language by forcing all kids to speak English in schools, if they spoke any Welsh including in the play ground, they were severely punished. Aberystwyth is the heart and stronghold of the Welsh language, it was why he was sent there to learn Welsh. So it was inevitable Charles would face a lot of anti Royalist sentiment there. His speech however inspired a lot of hope things would change and they have.

I did feel sorry for Prince Charles. He wanted so much to be loved and accepted by the Queen and instead she criticized him for going off script. Now it is clear as to why he doesn't say much now. She shut him down by saying no one wants to hear what he has to say. That's so sad. I think she is purposely trying to out live him so he won't become king. I have always felt that way and after seeing this episode, I think she really would prefer William to be king over Prince Charles. The actor really nailed the emotions.

Britishness...is a political synonym for Englishness which extends English culture over the Scots, the Welsh, and the Irish. - Dr. Gwynfor Evans (Welsh politician, lawyer and author. He was President of the Welsh political party Plaid Cymru for thirty six years and was the first Member of Parliament to represent it at Westminster, which he did twice, from 1966 to 1970, and again from 1974 to 1979.) Quote after his death in 2005 Without Gwynfor Evans at the helm Plaid Cymru may not have survived to see electoral success in later years. His influence was felt beyond the confines of party politics. Wales would not be the nation it is today - perhaps would not be counted as a nation at all - if not for Gwynfor Evans. - Dafydd Iwan former President of Plaid Cymru. (the singer of the song at the end credits)

@chwilhogyn5 жыл бұрын
He was give the title in 1958 at the age of 12 while he was listening to the radio at school, the Queen's Uncle the former King, Duke of Windsor held the title due being the first son of the monarch, If and when Charles becomes king he will have the right to give the title to William, or he might extinguish the title as obsolete
@TheEtruscanhorse5 жыл бұрын
@Dylan Thomas. Passing the title to William would effectively resurrect the title 'The Princess of Wales' for his wife which would have connotations during Charles's lifetime. The title will probably go into 'suspended animation' if and when Charles accedes and then remain dormant until William is ready to pass it to his son.
@ddports5545 жыл бұрын
