In Kat Von D's defense, she explains in that video that her occult-lite flirtations had attracted a stalker and she feared for her son. She never had serious interests in that stuff, like most people, just dabbled, for the aesthetic. She was raised on a Christian missionary base and she was a teenage runaway. She doesn't have the best educational foundation. I can just see why it would scare her back to the only other thing she knows.

Both my parents were/are crunchy and alt-right. My mom constantly called me overweight at 9 (if anything I was underweight from years of food insecurity at the hands of HER). She claimed to only eat healthy but refused to buy any food that wasn’t mayo and bread for her children. My father refused to get us vaccinated and wouldn’t let anything in the house with more than six ingredients ( that was actually a rule, and sugar couldn’t be a in the top 3). I was consistently sick as a child and got the flu at least four times every winter. I suffered so much as a child and teen bc my parents refused to properly nourish me OR medicate me. I moved out when I was 14 and in with my grandparents and turns out I have health issues that have been affecting me my whole childhood, I just never knew bc I was medically and physically neglected. It frustrates and breaks my heart to hear how mainstream this has gotten bc it almost ruined my life and the suffering I endured almost made me end my life. It sucks to know how many millions are/going to go through the same thing and not have the resources I did to escape

I'm really glad you escaped a little early, but I know that doesn't lessen the trauma at all. You went through hell. I'm happy you commented because I feel less alone. I went through something similar, without vaccination or medical care until I moved out at 19. I was essentially un-schooled before that word was well-known, so I had nobod. I had Lymes that was never treated and caused rheumatoid arthritis later, but I was sick at home for years in total. I got pneumonia every year during the cold months- which was Minnesota so over half the year. It would clear up by early June only to return by November, December if I was lucky. I'd break ribs coughing fairly often. I still remember the long days spent alone in my room when I was sick. Thank goodness for books. I was rarely checked in on. I'm sure you probably weren't, either. I ended up getting whooping cough, I still remember the weird sound and only realized what it was a few years later. I also got mumps. I'm thinking I caught other things I should have been vaxxed for, but only those two are certain because the symptoms are so iconic. It was mostly because I was also underweight, like you. I was sick with lots of mystery stuff. The only good thing that came from it? Since I finally put some weight on at 23, it's been over a decade since I've been sick with any flu or serious cold. I think I caught everything until my immune system just became iron-clad and said "NO MORE!" Now I can be around sick people and not worry, but always remember this probably won't last forever. I still got all my shots for covid right away, if not for me, then for others. I didn't think I needed them but I also didn't want to risk being a symptomless carrier that could have infected my loved ones, or risk being just plain wrong. I'm an advocate against zero-oversight homeschooling and "un-schooling" now because it's almost always about keeping children away from any healthy oversight so they can neglect or abuse how they please while leaving the child with no future, medical problems and malnutrition, and no ways to escape or even have friends. They don't want anyone to see just how much they *truly* meant it when they say "We don't believe in gentle parenting!" I'm so sorry again that so many of us exist and you went through much the same. Sending you hugs, but only with consent of course 😂 ❤💚💕💚❤️

I absolutely feel you! Though with very different parent issues... fighting with the knowledge that they ruined me when I was helpless and wondering were I could be now, had all the talent I was born with been paired with an ounce of self respect. At this moment in time I'm at: it wasn't their fault, they did what they felt was necessary and right, it's just sad that it wasn't. That feels okay, at the moment, much less resentful than I have been at other times. How are you doing now?

Waiting for my vegan antivax cousin to reach this stage. And yeah, I've really noticed this. With my sociology hat on probably it's related to the discourse of returning to our 'natural' and 'perfect' state (though multiple studies have shown that our ancestors were likely omnivores.) You can really see the link between holistic lifestyle and eugenics just like in the previous century and how this connects antivaxers, alternative medicine, nutritional advocates and the far right.

@@gavinadams1982 We also have to consider the type of power before vs. now. If someone is in an elected position, they'll appease both their investors and their voters. But, once in a position that is given to them rather than one they're voted into, they need only worry about their investors and their self-interests. We will see his true nature, for the better or worse, because he will not have to answer to voters. The same can be said for anyone Trump appoints to a position, they'll need only to appease him, investors, and themselves. it came from a completely different place, though. leftist anti-GMO sentiment, for example, was not (often) about the products themselves but about Monsanto and the ecosystem destruction done by monoculture farming right wing anti-GMO sentiment is about food essentialism and reaching for a mythological primordial pure diet that, if you adhere to it, will turn you into a greek god i think this difference in framing most clearly expresses itself in supplement sales: i can't think of even a single leftist that bought supplements of any kind, no matter how into the crunchy lifestyle they were. if anything, there was a problematic essentialism that saw pills themselves as a thing to be avoided the crunchy right wing, meanwhile, can't get enough supplements. useless snake oil pill sales have exploded, and they fund most right wing media outlets. and that's baked right into the whole quest to find the perfect primordial diet - consuming the supposedly raw and undiluted nutrients that supposedly gave people herculean bodies back when REAL MEN existed and all that crap

I'd always been an active person, I walked most places instead of driving. Now, going up a set of stairs makes me gasp for air. And I still get horrible bloody noses on a regular basis. It made my pre-existing migraines worse. Yet, I still feel lucky as I lost 5 different family members to CoVid, including my mother, so I'm lucky to have my life. I hadn't known I had some immunity issues that were genetic until I got CoVid. I didn't even know I was high-risk. What changed things was listening to my doctor and taking my medication. I can stay awake all day now, and my symptoms are much more manageable. You convinced me I need to read cultish next-it’s been on my list of reads. I am a key demographic of this pipeline-grew up religious and homeschooled, living in a rural community, a mother of a young child, white, with a chronic illness affecting my reproductive health system and lots of doctors who don’t listen to me. I’m so thankful that I got out of that pipeline 10 years ago. Because I was raised in extremism I will unfortunately always be susceptible to extremism so it’s important for me to always get my information from varied, reputable sources and consult trusted experts in their fields when I am unsure of how to read the research. We can’t know everything, so approaching these topics with an attitude of “I could be wrong” has really helped me. Also being skeptical of people selling a “solution” to a “problem” I didn’t know existed has also helped me to combat misinformation.

I don't think people appreciate how becoming a mother unlocks many new fears. Not only are you more acutely aware of all the ways the world is scary and could hurt your child in a way you weren't before because it was easier to tune out, but social media and the news are always reporting on a new threat to children. I understand and sympathize with why moms lose their minds and go down rabbit holes in a quest for control over the safety of their children. Not everyone can avoid therapy and sensibly deal with their anxiety as it comes up. Still, I wish there was more support for accepting and people were more comfortable with uncertainty. It sucks, and the world is scary, but fantasy is not helping anyone in the long run.

I think your point is the entire point of these issues: there should be more social support, education, community and loving care for families. Without it, parents suffer, which in turn could have the potential to cause their children to. Parents and families more than ever need education, higher ed, childcare, healthcare, insurance, affordable housing and other types of community support systems. Those supports being threatened or actually taken away are what is causing all of these conspiracy problems. We need to rise up and take control over these systems and create a socialist democracy type society that supports and values its communities and families in an educated, respectful, affordable and grounded manner - rather than through profit seeking and misinformation.

Perhaps fear itself is something that probably ought to be regulated. Lots of harm is caused by fearful people sharing their fear with others who fear the same thing and the they validate each other and those fears become real to them regardless of the actual reality. This is why everyone is convinced crime is sky high when the stats just don’t show that, there was a pandemic bump but it is way down and has been going down for decades.that perception of crime causes policies that cause real harm too.

And more to your point that natural fear is weaponized against parents (mothers in particular) to sell products. You don’t want your child to drown, freeze, get hurt in the car, die from SIDS, fall down the stairs etc and so “Have we got the product for you!” Some of it might actually help, but a lot of it is unnecessary, redundant, expensive, or even more dangerous than nothing at all. It’s a reason I had to stop watching parenting videos because they were trying to play on my fears and everyone in the comments who said that the risk was actually low or the item was unnecessary would be shouted down by other scared parents. The ones who put their faith in the safety products to save their sanity instead of getting help to learn that you can only control so much and have to learn to live with some risk in your child’s life. It’s no surprise that little by little they fall down the rabbit hole.

You saying that there were "trying to find vaccines" has been proved false a long time ago. The name of this disease and the vaccines for it have been around 2016. Also, some of the top dogs of Big Pharma did testify last year that masking was basically a made up thing and that they didn't know if it would work. I guess the CNN didn't cover that in the States?

HBO has a show featuring Guru Jagat from the Kundalini yoga world . When I lived in Los Angeles during the late aughts/early teens, there was a yoga studio behind my culinary school. I went one day and was hooked (likely all the deep breath work). It turned out to be Golden Bridge Yoga and was a huge kundalini yoga studio in LA and NYC. The documentary has been very eye-opening. I left that world in 2014, thank god. A full yoga video from Bryony would be really interesting considering her research and subsequent presentation.

You know what sucks, for me I tried so hard to only see female doctors because I thought they'd keep me safe but apparently they are biased against me. The times I sort of accidentally saw a male they actually listened to me and weren't weird to me. So I'm in a crap position where now the pattern is unavoidable to observe (I'm 45, that's lots of doctors now) and I've realised I have to see male doctors because female doctors hate me or find me difficult to deal with or whatever that leads to malpractice...it's probably because I'm neurodivergent 😢

And honestly I’m just so so over influencers, being shilled to, overconsumption, putting these people on pedestals to begin with and then being surprised when they end up being really awful people - and Kristi falls into ALL of these categories. Edit to add - 30:00 “health is a meritocracy” this is such a good point! I dated someone who was going down this pipeline and my god how many things clicked to me in this video. His background was that he used to be a vegetarian, didn't have a driver's licence because of environmental reasons (also to stick out to his dad or smth) etc and when I met him he was this "adorable weirdo" and we shared some beliefs. But during our relationship he got more and more into these things, like stopped using fluoride tooth paste, didn't want to eat soy, started casually talking about some ethnonationalistic bs, refused to take any medicine to anything, got some pine pollen stuff to "boost his testosterone" idk, dabbled in some carnivore ideas, idolized a far-right figure in our country, told me, with tears in his eyes, how "souls want to be born", the list goes on. And the thing is, all he wanted was wellness for himself and world peace, at first he never spouted his ideas in a hateful manner, he truly wanted what was best for humankind. But then, as his mental health got worse, he got deeper into the pipeline and I started to be genuinely worried and tbh scared of the views he was adopting. We were in a long distance relationship and I was dealing with my own hardships at the time, while being 21-22 years old so ultimately the best thing I could do at that point was to get myself out. This happened before covid and thank god for that, I can only guess how he handled that whole thing. I do sometimes wonder if he ever got out of the pipeline, did he get worse or could he have escaped. I do wish for the best for him and I hope he got out and is doing better now.

I'm homeschooling my children. I'm in Oklahoma and a Christian national has taken over our schools. It's so sad, but it's a bit of a mass exodus right now from our public schools because they have gone insane. So far, our superintendent had mandated bibles are required in every classroom, 10 commandments must be posted, replacing teachers with ex military and law enforcement, replacing licensed counselors with Christian chaplains, policies that deny trans kids the right to change their gender or use the correct restroom, mandates banning teaching of accurate history science and biology, refusal to give schools federal funding to prevent school shootings, hiring an out of state Twitter troll to ban library books, harassing teachers, banning state legislators and media from attending public meetings if they have critical positions....i think that's most of it. We are 49th in education and we just elected Trump who is considering appointing the very same Oklahoma superintendent, Ryan Walters, to the federal department of education, then planning to dismantle the department entirely. It's like they saw the dumpster fire i refused to toss my children into and decided to pour some gas on and spread out to the rest of the country. RIP my masters degree cause it looks like I'll be homeschooling my kids forever.

Venting in this comment section which I never do lol….My mother is someone who has been convinced that vaccines cause autism since the early 2000s, which really sucks because she is someone who has worked with many children on the spectrum as a teacher. I had to go with my dad to get vaccines behind her back because she would fight with the schools and doctors that said I required them. Once she got facebook, the misinformation just spiraled from there. She now has gone down the full QAnon route. I tried over and over for years to try to educate her, I was patient, but she never believed anything I said. She then got more and more racist and believed more and more conspiracies as time went on. Especially during 2020. She got a fake vaccine card, and rebuked that covid was real, even though I have severe asthma and breathing problems literally due to her smoking around me as a baby. She is not open to learning or taking in new information because she thinks she knows best on all and ‘does her own research’. I am a queer woman, have had many POC & trans partners, and I told her in 2016, and in 2020, that if she voted for him she was voting against me as well as the people I love. Which hurts, especially since she adopted me. I warned her if she continued to support such a hateful man that I would not want her to be in my life, and she chose him. I went no contact with her in 2023 to try and protect my peace. (And it’s been like a weight off my shoulders bc despite this, she was also pretty manipulative/abusive outside of her views). It makes me sad, because I feel like this system preys on those who are older, and less educated. As she grows older, and when listening to some of the things she says, I do wonder about dementia and what not because I truly can not make sense of it. It’s very sad, and kudos to those people out there that can have those hard conversations with people about this, I unfortunately do not have it in me.

Also vegan here (hi!! 💚🐾🌱) I wonder if right wing vegans (oxymoron, surely!) are just trying to seem caring (though I think many do care about animals too) but are actually using animals as a tool to also try enforce the White Supremacist social hierarchy. 'animals are better than people' ( meaning *those* people). Also the claim that animals are 'innocent' and 'voiceless' has long bothered me and I think I just figured out why. Cause this way White Veganism can say now 'look (farmed animals) ARE voiceless and innocent' so a farmed animal is a 'perfect victim' who deserves help, support or saving. But anyone else, by contrast, is not and needs to take 'personal responsibility' for their suffering. I think they are using the lowest bar possible of the treatment of farmed animals to say 'THIS is suffering', rather than linking farmed animals' suffering to the way we all suffer and struggle in some way under capitalism and help grow a bigger movement. They instead use farmed animals' lowest status to gaslight people lower in the hierarchy who suffer, cos as they're not right at the bottom like farmed animals are, they don't deserve our consideration. Not only that, animals are "innocent", but what are you? Maybe you did something to deserve the punishment that is your suffering. It's all very strange but it seems to make sense to me under that punitive, heirachical mindset, while pretending that caring for animals is so so important to them. Not important enough to not to alienate marginalised / left leaning folks from our movement and get more done for the animals though, eh! Can't help think there's a White Saviourism in there too "voice of the voiceless" always sounded like that to me.

Oh I love learning of how our society understands gender! It’s interesting to me personally how the feminine is seen as action (shaving, using various soaps, applying make up, taking care in hairstyles and do-ups, dressing in various jewellery and clothing) and the masculine as in-action (hairy, simple or not bothered for hygiene, limited style). That’s only appearance - it then goes on with behaviour as trying to “prove” your gender, like currently with all this Andrew Tate none-sense. Car + money + muscle + beard + being loud + harassing (getting) women (b**hes) = a “real” man.

I went down the pipeline about 15 years ago. What started me on the path out was studying actual science in college (also learning more about human behavior and history, and devloping a love of learning in general). Education is so important, my dudes. It gives you a wealth of actual context and resources to compare new information against, and exercizes your brain, allowing you to develop better critical thinking skills. Going to college is probably the best thing I've ever done, and I'm not even "using" my degree. One of the things I'm worried most about this new administration (apart from all the human rights violations) is the dismantling of the already strained education system. Knowledge is power.

I'm with you that hysterical fear of all chemicals isn't good, but I really think there is a more nuanced discussion to be had about GMOs, pesticide use and organic farming. I don't eat all organic but I still believe that if we want to save the planet we NEED to reduce pesticide use, which is harming entire ecosystems. And the pesticide-resistent GMO crops we are planting so that farmers can use even more pesticides is part of the problem. Yes, eating veggies is always good, organic or otherwise, but the systems producing those veggies are VERY flawed and it's good to criticise them. I guess what I'm saying is that I think questioning authority is important, even if the individualistic solutions people turn to, like restrictive diets and insular cults are misguided.

Easy peasy right? But then why did i get the "this surgery may be fantastic and make the pain go away or you may die or you may be left at any point in-between" because even a small incision and a screwdriver taking out a bolt isn't able to be labled 100% effective and 100% safe. @@driley5004 just a thought, but no, it’s not the same. And here’s why: The republicans/conservatives (mostly of the MAGA variety) hate and want to control people for who they are. I.E. immigrants, trans folks, anyone in the lgbtq+ community, poc, etc. Which is different than calling someone out for BEING hateful. If you haven’t yet, I recommend you look into the paradox of tolerance. If I’m at dinner and my uncle starts to deny me food until I change my hair color, and I speak out against that, am I the aggressor? If someone thinks that illegal immigrants should be round up like cattle via drag nets, and I speak out about it, and I in the wrong? If gay people want to have the same rights as straight people, but someone thinks it’ll somehow ruin the idea of marriage because of their personal interpretation of their religion, and in fact want said gay folks to not exist, and I speak up about it, am I the oppressor? Like, who started this? Did the left try and make it illegal to be straight? Of course not. That’s stupid, the majority of people are straight. Did the left try and make it illegal to be Christian? Of course not, that’s stupid, the majority of Americans are Christian. Trans rights and Covid was really the straw that broke the camels back in my opinion. Asking people to use someone’s preferred pronouns and asking people to wear a mask so less people would die was just too much for some folks. And now we’re dealing with the fallout. We are ALL struggling right now, and during Covid. But the issue will not be fixed by removing immigrants (they actually help the economy) or pushing anyone from the lgbtq+ back into the closet. It will not be fixed by people like nick fuentes chanting “your body, MY choice”, it will not be fixed by banning books, it will not be fixed removing access to contraceptives, or shaming people without children. It will not be fixed by hating the “other” or finding a powerless scapegoat. History has shown us that scapegoating ends n disaster.
