We should talk about the crystal systems
There are seven that we should consider
And I’m gonna list
All of them right now, so
Isometric, tetragonal, orthorhombic,
Monoclinic, triclinic and hexagonal, and lastly we have trigonal systems yea these are
The sevens crystal systems
Now let’s talk about axes and angles
Isometric and trigonal both have
Equadistant sides of their unit cell, but
Tetragonal and hexagonal systems have
Two sides of equal distance and one that is not
Equal such that a=b=\c in distance
The other systems,
Orthorhombic, monoclinic
And triclinic have sides that are
Not equal such that
A b and c are all different distances
And that’s it for the axes
Moving on to the angles these
Are equal to 90 degrees
In isometric tetragonal and
orthorhombic systems but
The others are not so simple for
Example, in monoclinic systems angles alpha and
Beta equal 90 degrees but gamma does not
This is similar to hexagonal systems but in these
Gamma is 120 degrees
Lastly, Triclinic and trigonal systems have
Angles that are not equal to 90 degrees, but
In the case of trigonal are equal to each other
But in triclinic are not equal.

Sorry y'all, for the Monoclinic system angles, I meant to say alpha and gamma* equal 90 degrees, but beta* does not! ;)

Does it make any difference being gamma not equal to 90 degrees or beta not equal to 90 degrees. I thought any one of the three should be not equal to 90 degrees is correct to say. Isn't it correct?

@@green_tuber I believe it actually matters because of the way we define alpha beta and gamma. Alpha is the angle between axes b & c, beta is the angle between a & c, and gamma is the angle between a & b, and because the axes are always defined in the same way we can't interchange the angle definitions... At least this is my understanding. Hope that makes sense! ;D

@@GEOGIRL thanks a lot. So this means there is a convention going on everyone should follow. I got it. Edit:- I am from a physics background so I usually follow the concept of equivalence. Thats why I get confused in some cases.

I was obsessed by geology when I was a kid. I still have a rather large collection of minerals in 3 large boxes today. I want to build a display for the nicest crystals. I used to know the 7 crystalline systems by heart! Great song, pure gold! (Which is cubic centered)
