12:49 re: positive feedbacks, why do you say primary production decreases during the interglacial/warm periods? That doesn’t make sense. In warm periods, primary production increases with more CO2 in the atmosphere. Warmer oceans retain less carbon dioxide, freeing it up for terrestrial plants. CO2 is a trace atmospheric gas, has decreasing effect logarithmically.. that is, assuming we raised the global mean temperature 1° from 200 to 400 ppm CO2, then a subsequent degree of warming requires an additional 400 ppm (to 800ppm) We’d need to reach 1600 ppm for the next additional degree of warming. Water vapor is a far more significant factor for warming. I think you made the same flawed assumption as Al Gore. It’s the other way around - an increase in global mean temperature precedes a bloom of life (as evidenced by increased CO2) If you zoom in on your graph it will be evident. Point of fact: CO2 has been cascading downward from the plateau preceding the Cambrian “Skeletonization” (to borrow your term😉 Because of the advent of biomineralization, over the subsequent half billion years we’ve reached an historic dearth of CO2. Thanks to the industrial age this trend has rebounded - think about this irony before you replay. If we had continued to 150 ppm (sustained over time) it would spell the death of all plants. Be thankful it is getting warmer. Maybe we can stave off the next major glaciation. It seemed inevitable not long ago.

Ok, wow! Mind blown regarding Antarctic deglaciation for thousands of years. I’m believing the Piri Reis map has more legitimacy in this light.

PLATE TECTONICS DRIVES CLIMATE, LIFE AND EVOLUTION HERE ON EARTH.

Good presentation of information. Nothing new here, except flushing out some details. I learned all this starting in 1970 from MIT and CAL TECH while in the USAF-AFTAC and studies since. Nice charts and summary. Venus-Earth-Mars can be seen as covering the tectonic spectrum across time. Water acts like both a lubricant and an abrasive depending on temperature. A super heated, extremely dense metal saturated column of water is highly corrosive, forms an effective rock splitting process. "Thermionic Acid" if you will, Ph and concentration is both temperature and pressure dependent. Columns, Plumes, Dykes and Volcanoes are a result seen in the Crust or upper surface of the Lithosphere. The idea the Lithosphere and the Mantel are hotter than they should be is an opinion based on assumptions about data. The hypotheses is interesting and a logical construct.

Thanks for an interesting video! I would guess that global plate tectonics is not essential for life, which would still hang around in pockets in Mars for example... And wouldn't you call Europa a plate tectonic world but of ice plates rather than of silica?
@GEOGIRL
@GEOGIRL 5 сағат бұрын
The potential evidence for plate tectonics on Europa is still very unproven, but hopefully Europa clipper will help us answer that question! Even if it doesn’t have plate tectonics though, it is certainly tectonically active (or at least recently was) which makes it an exciting place to explore for life😃

That has been long refuted. Why do people still come up with this BS for which they don't have the slightest bit of evidence? Do they want to be able to claim something that only they 'know' and nobody else?

I'm relatively new to paleontology. I knew plate tectonics had an impact on the evolution of life. But what you said about life appearing before plate tectonics was news. I don't expect complex life to be on the moons of Jupiter. I reckon it's a good place to start looking for other life.

Yes, it’s more so thought to be a driver (just one of the many) of the evolution of complex life on earth, not microbial life. Microbial life had been around for a while before the hypothesized start of plate tectonics. But tectonic activity in general (whether it involves plates or not) is still important for the evolution and maintenance of microbial life :)

An interesting thought in this video is the reference to drip tectonics on Venus. This is especially interesting in light of the apparent repaving of the surface of that planet in the last 250,000,000 I've seen referenced in work from NASA planetary scientists, probably including Stern. This brings to mind the possibility planets like Earth and Venus could have experienced something like episodes of relative stasis, interrupted by what pre- tectonic-aware geophysicists used to call "orogenic storms" in which an area of 'drip' could drag down whole regions of crust, simultaneously stirring up circulation and upwellings from below. This might then incite similar drip-and-drag cycles on surrounding crustal regions. Presumably, such episodes of stasis and storm could trend rarer as the planets cooled, and the size of crustal/lithal regions would also grow larger and move more stably. Fantastic video!

I like this hypothesis! I've always had struggles with plate tectonics historical extrapolations. The ideas here address what I consider logical weak points. Definitely curious to learn more about geological variations that have been suggested.. has anyone started mapping them yet? 😲

The sun willNEVER explode! As soon as the hydrogen is used up, helium begins to burn in the sun, causing the sun to expand significantly and become a red giant. The earth may be destroyed in the process. In the end, when the helium also runs out, the sun sheds its outer shells and shrinks into a white dwarf...

I don't think we're anywhere near being able to detect plate tectonics outside of our solar system, but I never thought we'd be able to take actual pictures of planets, let alone detect them, outside of our solar system. Never say never.

Plate tectoncs is caused by the expansion of the Earth. The exspansion is caused by the atmosphere. A planet without atmosphere shrinks. So, you can date the time when the Earth got an atmosphere by the appearence of the first cracking of the surface. The same when a planet lost it atmosphere like the Moon and Mars.

Hey, aren't scientist measuring the speed at witch the crust slips? Don't days get shorter due to this slippage that occurs? Do geologists consider Earth's connection to the Sun and it's dramatic reaction to powerful solar Flares like volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, well coronal holes add to these reactions too.

Could tectonic regimes perhaps be related to snowball earths? Lid regime seems to indicate more rapid surface cooling (relatively), and plate tectonics perhaps a build-up of heat that breaks the lid.
