Robert E. Howard (the author and inventor of Conan the Barbarian) was also a writer of Lovecraft's Circle of Writers. He wrote about some Old Gods and other Lovecraftian Horrors before writing Conan the Barbarian. Conan, at its core, it's pretty much a Lovecraftian adventure book. The books started taking place after the fall of Atlantis and in the Hyborian age. Robert Howard took a lot of elements from Lovecrafts Circle when writings Conan the Barbarian.
@Maxdoom7774 жыл бұрын
Kull was before Conan on Atlantis. The main antagonists were shapeshifting serpent men. Interesting tidbit, Conan is a distant relative of Kull's.

And then he became canon to marvel when they bought the rights to conan and then they have ties to Shuma Gorath, part of the many angled ones who also bear a striking resemblance to Lovecraft entities. Lovecraftian influence stretches far and wide in the circles of sci-fi, horror and comic books and almost everyone uses his influence in some fashion. If only he had known how much of an impact he had made in the world today.

Not OFFICIALLY, but yes, he regularly fights or deals with shit "TOTTALY NOT AT ALL, DUE TO COPYRIGHT REASSONS 100% DISTINCT I SWEAR IT" from Lovecraft's works.
@SwankyKitteh823 жыл бұрын
Lol! You threw Conan The Barbarian in there. Lovecraft was supposedly purposely vague, to leave plenty of room to pass the torch to other creators to expand the lore later on. He also wasn't above doing collaborations with other creators of his time. Lovecraft's universe is thus also the same one the various Conan The Barbarian franchises take place in. As he and Robert Howard were friends. Most people who read Conan never make this connection, and fewer still know. Despite that it's entirely the reason Conan often fights snake people and cults that worship them. Conan directly took part in the human war for supremacy over the snake men. It's the same in all the various comic books, especially the Marvel Comics run. Conan's story takes place in the Hyborian Age, prior to the great flood. So there, I laid out that delightful web of continuity.

I never really thought that a timeline could be made for the Cthulhu mythos, though h.p. lovecraft is my favorite author of horror, I must say he wasn't all that consistent with a timeline of events. Now sure he had references and nods to previous works like writing about Miskatonic University and of Arkham. But when it came to a continuous timeline that's where lovecraft was lacking.
@TheGladGolem4 жыл бұрын
He wasn’t lacking, he DELIBERATELY avoided consistency in his descriptions of creatures and events to mirror the chaotic nature of humans trying to understand the nature of the unknowable through passed down anecdotes and obscure tomes written by madmen. He wanted an ANTI-Mythology, opposite to the clearly delineated relationships described in greek, roman and norse mythology.
@chony933 жыл бұрын

@@TheGladGolem his mythology mirrors perfecly those that you mentioned though. There has never been such thing as a cannon in real mythos, and common men were never as rational as we all believe-and aspire- to be after the Illustration. Just tell me, who's the head of the germanic pantheon? Is it Tyw, Donar or Woden? Where did the greeks believe the world came from? Was it from Chaos or from the world egg? Mythos change through space and time as cultures develop
@TheGladGolem3 жыл бұрын
@@rikospostmodernlife I would not say that it mirrors them perfectly. While certainly there are discrepancies and contradictions in real world mythologies, Lovecraft went a bit further with these inconsistencies. I believe he wanted to underline the human race’s tenuous grasp of the overarching relationships between the mythos beings. Especially when their nature is toxic to the human psyche.

Clearly a year late to this, but I have quick question. Was it ever established in the books/lore as to why all these aliens were attracted to earth? Lovecraft wrote most of his Cthulhu works after Hubble discovered that there were effectively infinite galaxies in 1924, so why did all these elder gods choose earth or are they everywhere?
@frankb33473 жыл бұрын
I always figured it had something to do with some sort of cosmic alignment. It could also simply be that once a first few being established themselves there it drew the attention of others. Which in turn drew the attention of even more.
@genkureshima9834 Жыл бұрын
Maybe just maybe Nyarlathotep is responsible for getting so much attention towards Earth after whenever he arrived, given how he's constantly seen and interpreted as some kind of gatekeeper but not one that wants it closed. On the contrary, he wants to open it up for Cthulhu and whoever the fuck else is asleep or waiting nearby (by nearby I mean in outerspace).

I’m so deep down the Game of Thrones mythical rabbit hole right now, I’ve come to the Chutulu mythos to gain insight into the secrets of A Song of Ice and Fire. For all those who don’t know, most of the gods in Westeros are actually eldritch horrors from this mythos. Carcossa is a city in the far east, the church of starry wisdom is a thing here, and Rhollor the lord of light is probably a sleeping old one, trapped just north of Asshai.

The two things I’d like to point out that for a mythos timeline that spans the whole universe and multiple-dimensions and thus possible other universes this is an Earth centric timeline. The mythos does include data on multiple star systems and their planets. The other thing is rather a question: where did you get your source for putting Yig as the progenitor of the Yithian species? I would genuinely very much like to know. I am myself trying to compile a timeline and database of mythos information, and this is key information since the Yithians are an important mythos species. I find no such information either under Yig or the Yithians online. Otherwise thank you for your video, it is a good resource and useful to have in the public domain. The mythos is of course being continually worked upon by contemporary writers, and so perhaps this Yig - Yithian connection is a creation of your own? Which is by no means not uninteresting or without merit. On leaving I would like to high-light perhaps the most important present creative contributor to the mythos, in my humble opinion, and that is Alan Moore. His comic book works “The Courtyard”, “Neonomicon” and “Providence” have both heightened and revolutionised the mythos, with superb art by Jason Burrows. I think in time his contributions will be seen to have added a stroke of genius to the mythos, providing new and rich seams from which to dig into. Anyway thank you for your video.

I always liked to play around d and d with the mythos. One time I created a campaign that entangled them in a world of madness and destruction only to reveal that they were lead by the dreams of cthulhu. As they tried to break away from their shackles of fate they begin searching through ancient cult like areas to fund anything on how to kill him. They find that he lays on the bottom of the ocean but it also reveals that he created everything including the human race to endure and fall prey to chaos and insanity.

There is a big misconception here. Azathoth is never said to be dreaming our reality into existence by H.P Lovecraft. He is said to only be dreaming of things he cannot comprehend. This misconception comes from an anime called Demonbane which has its own Azathoth that actually is dreaming the Demonbane universe into existence. It’s not that big of a deal but if you could correct that in the video it would be awesome.
@justinlast17953 жыл бұрын
No, he certainly is. You are assuming that a infinite dimensional being that makes all universes, aka, the multiverse,and is capable of recollecting the multiverse into a Omniverse and create infinite more universes, is not capable of collecting its own fragments. Think of each separate instance of Azathoth as it's own set of memories, what happens when Black Holes collide.

Although Lovecraft's work is under the "Genre" of Fiction, my gut instincts tells me there is more facts to his writing then fable. He was either a member of some kind of Secret society, or he rubbed elbows with members of a secret society. Because it's obvious by reading his works that he defintly knew more then what he let on. For the past 2,000 years these beings became known as the Archons, Titans, Gods, Djinn, Angels and demons, I think they can transform themselves to appear to us how ever they choose, or what best suits the time period. and now we call these entities "Aliens" or Interdimensionals. But the truth is their not Alien at all, I think they have been here far longer then human beings.
