US politicians (the official "good" guys): "See, communist economy doesn't work very well... they struggle already, with less than 100 years of sanctions!" A good video - very nicely explained.

They still trade with the US but it's limited and it's only food and certain medical products. However, there is a world full of countries Cuba can trade with.... stop using "sanctions" to justify your support of an authoritarian regime's poor economic policy.
@andreions
@andreions Жыл бұрын
@@EstesExtraordinarios You absolute monster and demon. Can't you understand that the US has the hegemony of the other world countries and by economic means the US can just sanction any and every country that gives aid or trades with Cuba. The Cubans are at the mercy of the US and even then they are still more educated and have a better healthcare system than the US.
@alessandrosilvafilho8527
@alessandrosilvafilho8527 Жыл бұрын
@Ed A the embargo also doesn't let other countries trade with the US if they trade with Cuba, basically forcing a decision between the world superpower and a tiny island. So, even if the embargo doesn't explicitly block any country to trade with Cuba, this decision just does it instead.

the reason companies dont do business with cuba even when technically allowed to (like the lift on sactions for food and medicine) is cause the embargo law is purposefully vague and companies would rather not risk it. also any ship that docks in a cuban port is banned from going to a US port for 3 months or something
@Ajente02
@Ajente02 2 жыл бұрын
@@jean-claudelol563 The very fact they could be legally sanctioned (whether or not such sanction has historically been enforced) encourages foreign companies to not risk themselves trading with Cuba. Of course, not all of them are persuaded by these risks, but a HUGE majority of them are. By the way, the 2019 Cuban constitution recognizes private property, so your last statement is false. The Cuban government doesn't prevent nor outlaw private business as long as they comply with Cuban laws; neither they outlaw trade with US private companies (why would they do such ridiculous thing? Cuba needs trade to survive the embargo). The rhetoric of an "internal embargo" is purely anti-Cuban false propaganda.

@@nathanlevesque7812by american standards, probably(hence why some people really believe Democrats to be leftist, when in reality both parties are only different flavour of Capitalism). In reality, it is a "more friendly" capitalism(so it s still on the right side of the political spectrum), which includes more social measures meant to provide a more secure life for citizens, but at the end of the day, it's still capitalism. (see the Nordic European Countries) I used to think the same way, and thought that being a SocDem was leftist, but realised it's far from. I highly suggest you research more on this subject, there are many great videos and books detailing why Social Democracies are not enough, and what are their shortcomings.

@~1:55, "US trade embargo against Vietnam." After Vietnamese unification in 1976, until 1994, the US imposed an embargo against Vietnam basically identical to Cuba's. During this time, Vietnam also had to fight a war in Cambodia against US backed dictator, Pol Pot. Eventually the Vietnamese people decided they'd suffered enough, and starting in the late 1980s, elected politicians to gradually implement World Bank reforms and transition from a command based socialist economy to a mixed market-command socialist economy.

This comment is kinda late but other countries were affected by the embargo as well. One example is Bangladesh, they made trade with Cuba so the US sanctioned them. Then came a large famine in 1974, and as they were sanctioned international aid was difficult. All because they traded with Cuba as they needed to make money somehow.

It's quite amazing how cruel the US was to Bangladesh as well. Nixon gave the Pakistani military the weapons and equipment they used in Operation Searchlight, knowing full well it was being used for genocide. Even sent over submarines with nukes off the coast of India as a threat to not intervene in the genocide.

When I hear someone vilify the Cuban government, I reply that we will never know how Cuba's politics and economy would have evolved if the US had never imposed an embargo. An anecdote: After Batista was deposed, Castro told his comrades that he was going to go to Washington to ask for US aid to help reform/develop Cuba. (After all, the USA was created by a revolution.). Castro's comrades laughed at him for being naive, telling him that Eisenhower would NEVER give aid to revolutionary Cuba. But Castro went to Washington, asked for aid, and was rejected. Is this anecdote true? And wouldn't it have been interesting if Cuba and the US had engaged in free and friendly trade and cultural exchange.

Unfortunately, the US government is wildly unresponsive to the will of the people. Case in point, a majority of Americans when polled support some form of universal healthcare, but given the hold of the two parties, we will never get it. Every popular up rising in the USA is crushed. Even Bernie never stood a chance in the primaries, the party would never let him get even close to the presidency. If the USA were a truly representative democracy, this conversation wouldn't be occurring.

Hey Azure. I am a big fan of your channel. I have a question: I once read somewhere that the reason why Che Guevara wanted to start a revolution in Bolivia was because it shared a border with five other third world countries, each one with their own violent political histories. If Che had managed to replace the Bolivian government with one similar to that of Cuba, then revolution could've easily had spread throughout Latin America. I have tried to find this quote, or anything written by Che to attest to that. Have you ever heard about that or any stated reason that Che might have said about his attempts to revolutionize Bolivia?

That explains why America is drowning in HFCS. Cuba could produce plenty of sugar, but the embargo makes that impossible. So, they subsidize corn in America and use it in place of sugar.
@gregrodriguez714
@gregrodriguez714 8 ай бұрын
Cuba sold their sugar to the USSR at subsidized prices and still could produce as much or enough. Cuba nationalized all Sugar Mills, not just the ones owned by Americans. First mistake. They put them in charge by people loyal to the Revolution, not by people with actual knowledge of the Sugar industry..! Even with the USSR willing to buy all the sugar Cuba produce, at an inflated market price, they NEVER even met their own quotas. They forced students and even medical doctors to have to "Volunteer" to go cut sugar during the harvest. You really think that people with no experience and no desire to do this kind of work can be productive? Cuba still has some of the richest land and soil in all the Caribbean, yet it cannot even produce enough food for its meager 11 million population? What did all this soil suddenly become barren without the U.S.? The embargo does not make it impossible for Cuba to produce Sugar or any other kind of agricultural produce. It's the lack of incentives for the Cuban farmers, which the Cuban government imposes on them, that prevents/inhibits growth. BTW. The US produced 8.37 Million Metric Tons of sugar this year, while Cuba only produced 410,000 Metric Tons. In 2002 the Cuban government announced that about half of Cuba's 156 sugar mills would be closed permanently. Forget biased political BS. Today in Cuba, sugar is RATIONED..! But you say that America is "Drowning"..? Open your eyes..!

Excellent video AzureScapegoat the U.S is a very imperialist nation and the most expansionist in human history people do not realize this but the U.S and the Western world is a global economic commercial empire and it practices neocolonialism and they basically something very similar to Zimbabwe when Mugabe did land reclamations and the British and the Americans freeze credit on Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe starved so not really surprising to me. Mugabe want Zimbabwe to be economically free and independent so they tried to take him down through neocolonialism therefore Mugabe went to Russia China North Korea Venezuela and went to the UN and vetoed power out of the MDC and Western nation to make Zimbabwe economically sovereign so there is to it my friend it exploitation is very common.

Que no pudieran hacer si no fuera por el embargo. Nuestro presidente AMLO en México ha insistido una y otra vez que ya termine el embargo y estamos de acuerdo. How much of Cuba's problems are the results of the embargo vs this below? "Criticism of Centrally Planned Economies The concept of central planning is subject to heavy criticism, especially from scholars in the Austrian school of economics. One major critique, associated with Friedrich Hayek, is that central planners cannot efficiently respond to supply and demand. In a market economy, businesses respond to price signals by increasing or decreasing the production of their goods. In a planned economy, there are no price signals, so planners cannot accurately forecast which products will be needed or not adapt to changing conditions. This means that there may be unnecessary shortages or surpluses of certain goods. Another critique is that command economies may be less efficient, due to the lack of competitive pressures. While private companies must avoid waste in order to remain profitable, enterprises in a command economy have no pressure to earn profits or reduce expenses." Would you be able to tell me why non-US companies are impacted by the embargo? Is it because they have shares in US enterprises or US enterprises have shares in them? Because their products have parts made in the US? Or is there more? I still have difficulties fathoming what would prevent Cuba from getting materials from other places, and I'm trying to understand this because I have a Cuban émigré colleague who says that the embargo does not do anything to Cuba, because it can trade outside the US... (which I don't believe to be fully true).

Any company that has any stake in any US business is blocked from trade with cuba. Even if they just own a share of a US company. This effectively cuts cuba off from over 90% of trade.

I dont understand, if the embargo is lifted Cuba would depend economically on the US, but as the quote said at the beginning of the video, if you are dependent on the other country, your country is not free. Does that mean that Cuba would be a (technically independent) non independent socialist country if the embargo is lifted?

This embargo has become a disgrace. Castro is long gone. There must me a solution other then just going on the way we are. No president wants to take on the challenge to come up with a solution. 60 years is way too long. This is the USA -we can negotiate an end to this embargo with a little effort. Cuba is not a military threat anymore. I say boo to all our chickenshit presidents from JFK to Biden for not trying harder to normalize relations. Yes the embargo is hurting Cubans, but it is not helping us.
