It looks like it killed itself off due to the position he found himself in, being smaller than the biological babies and while trying to push it got beneath them and passed away. So the mother was just cleaning up

@@cuoivelo8360 Some species can detect the parasites, sometimes even when they are just eggs. Already saw a video of a mother refusing to feed one of them, tho she didn't remove it from the nest. In case of crows it's funny because they know but willingly raise the cuckoos, as baby cuckoos can't remove the baby crows. A study of this "partnetship" reavealed that the smell of a baby cuckoo's excretion drive away predators from the nest.

Actually the cuckoo baby was already not responsive to calls. Hence, the mother is clearing the dead cuckoo away. But the cuckoo baby probably was suffocated underneath the weight of its "siblings" while pushing them away.

Hell yes. And good on human intervention. I can't stand the people who say "it's nature" and "let nature take its course". Nah. If a person has ever experienced the love of a child or something akin to that (say raising a kitten or puppy) and still contend that it's cool for the cuckoo to kill then in my personal opinion they are horribly flawed humans of highly questionable moral aptitude. The fact is, I've known that feeling and if a creature baby or otherwise tried to kill my son then all bets are off.

@@Funktastico Instinct. They basically don’t have any comprehension of causality, they have instincts. They don’t try to return babies to the nest, that’s what it is. Might be correlated to the fledging but I can’t tell for sure, I just can tell they don’t even react to babies which lie one foot next to the nest.

Likely it starved to death, cuckoos aren't hardwired to beg for food when their host sings the song of their people, that's one reason why they push their nestmates out. As a result, it wasn't properly nourished and it starved to death.

May be combination of multiple factors. The cuckoo missed optimal hatching timing; over exhausted pushing host chick etc. If I'm not mistaken, there was data indicated the cuckoo survival rate less than 40%
