From various interviews, articles and my own personal understanding and experience with the recording industry and bands, the story that is most easily pieced together was that everything went sideways for the CULT because they had had been touring non-stop since recording Love. Electric had started to help them break them in the US, and I imagine the Record company/Label had lobbied hard for them to keep touring and hit while it was hot. As they were still a young band naive to the industry, I think they kept at it as a result of company pressure. They never took a break and the extensive touring of 2 albums, non-stop eventually took a toll on the health of band. By the end of the Electric tour, they were thoroughly burned out and enormously popular - but still not individually wealthy as musicians, yet. The royalties had yet to come in for them. They were headlining their tours and even had bands like Guns N Roses as their opening band, but I think the band was starting to crack up from all the pressure. On top of it all, Ian's father died after fighting cancer (this was while they were touring), so bad habits like drugs and alcohol became coping mechanisms, and later, an acknowledged problem.Ian has been quite open about this part of their history. During the last shows of the Electric tour, the band took to trashing their equipment at enormous cost to themselves. Ian can be seen trashing a drum kit and tearing down a Marshall speaker stack at the end of the video for Lil Devil. However, band hijinks like trashing equipment, hotels and whatever other bad behavior you read about also comes at a cost. Especially with young bands. Major record labels will always screw with young bands the most, because they can, and The Cult wound up owing for everything they destroyed. The band's inherited cost of this behavior (plus their touring expenses versus profits) probably caused a lot of money discussions between band and label. Reportedly, at the end of the tour, they cut Les and Steven Harris (aka Kid Chaos/Haggis) loose with just their equipment and a check for their services, NOT as members of the band, but as TOURING musicians. FYI, Payment for services as a touring musician even today, isn't a lot of money. Les had toured for the Love but was uncredited on the album, because he was one of several drummers who were brought in to fill-in during the absence of their original drummer. On Electric, Les was listed as a member of the band, but he shared no songwriting credit. This is a key thing to note, as only credited songwriters ever saw significant shares of any profits. Most, if not all song credits are Duffy/Astbury. If I'm not completely mistaken, even Jamie Stewart shared little songwriting credit on any of the first four CULT albums. So, when it came to the end of the tour and a tour reckoning of finances, my guess was that it was the label's decision to cut Les and Haggis, as opposed to the band's decision. I came to this conclusion, because Les sued the band (or more likely the band's label and management), probably because he felt he was owed his due as a full member of The Cult. Haggis however, and by his own account, is still on good terms with Ian and Billy to this day. IMO, Kid Chaos/Haggis/Steve Harris' exit story form the CULT on this is pretty much as I've recounted it here. He left the band with his bass and a small check in his pocket for working on the tour. Although recognized by Cult fans as a full member, he did not play on the album and shared no song credits.I feel his contribution however, was how he had influenced the band on their look and his relationship to Rick Rubin. Prior to joining The Cult, Haggis was a member of Zodiac Timewarp and the Love Reaction - whose biker aesthetic and gasoline, women and motorcycles manner of songwriting planted the seed for their Electric-era switch in identity. In Propaganda Magazine from the early 80's, there were articles on ZT&TLR being expected to be the next big thing, with Ian being spotted at shows and backstage. In the end, ZT&TLR never made it, which is why there's not a lot about them. Zodiac Mindwarp (AKA Mark Manning) wrote about how The Cult took the band on tour with them and how they later poached their bass-player, Haggis/Kid Chaos/Steve Harris. Harris on the other hand, had a really good relationship with Rick Rubin, and at Rubin's suggestion, went on to form the critically acclaimed band, The Four Horsemen. After the band's failure to succeed (from a combination of drug problems and sheer bad luck), Harris retired from music. He later got diagnosed with dyslexia, and made the incredible decision to back to school as an adult - going on to continue his studies as a grad student, summa cum laude at Columbia NYC studying medicine. He was pretty close to finishing his PhD a few years ago. Last time I looked he was working at a NY hospital as a full MD specializing in women's oncology.
