Just found this video... can’t believe it... saw them on this tour in in Hamburg at the Markthalle... 😃 Still remember it damn good, we arrived pretty early, so we made it to the first row right in front of the stage. LOVE is one of my all time favorite albums... ( btw, with Mark Brzezicki from Big Country on drums. Unfortunately only on the album, not on the tour)

The Love album was so great with it Goth ambience and guitar sound. This show is a document of the original Cult before they lost the drummer to drugs. And the bass player quit. I recently saw a Cult show and they look and sound as good as ever after 40 years. Not many bands can say that. Great band! 👏🏻😎

I think they sound even better here than the gig at the The Ritz in New York a few months prior. And the beginning of RAIN is so incredible! I got chills watching it! And Ian at 15:47 overwhelmed by the whole experience! Fantastic! Best live version of She Sells Sanctuary EVER!!

Great version. Glad to finally see how Brother Wolf, Sister Moon was played (too bad it was cut off). I do not think there is video of when they played it at the Ritz, but I always wondered if that show had been overdubbed due to the use of a second guitar during Brother Wolf, Sister Moon. Now I know how it was done...it was JAMIE! Playing the same guitar seen being used by Ian during the Whistle Test version of Ressurection Joe and also used by Billy during the "official" video for Revolution. Jamie played it for the intro to Brother Wolf and then switched back to bass to finish off the rest of the song! Brilliant!

Def something magical about the Love album. I didn't like the direction they went with Electric but it was still a good record. As the 80's were coming to an end, rock was expanding, and the New Wave era was over, so their sound had to evolve. Nothing wrong with artist integrity and changing with the times, but once you have created perfection, it doesn't make sense to do the same thing with different lyrics.
@mrjon752 жыл бұрын
While I slightly prefer LOVE at this time, I'm not mad at ELECTRIC ⚡ at all :)
@bigscountrygame35102 жыл бұрын
I’ve always wondered what if? If they hadn’t met Rick Rubin? Because this album in my opinion is perfect! 😎
@Nominay Жыл бұрын
Electric was the solution to them being stylistically in flux. Their heart was no longer in post punk at all, but Ian was right - they needed Rick Rubin. Electric sounds like a punk band making a rock record. The Cult's fall from grace was falling for the American rock trip in full, which happened outside the studio (after Electric was complete).
@DebraNormand7 жыл бұрын
The Cult was the perfect undefined band during this time of the Love album. You couldn't really identify or label them; then came the Electric album and they were totally different. Compared to songs like Lil Devil this song sounds like Mozart. Nothing they've done since will ever compare to the Love album, which in my humble opinion was the pinnacle of their success. How does a band go from being on top musically then go down change format over the years but still survive? The Cult are an enigma.
@krasteff5 жыл бұрын
They never found their ego. And the British never found the way to the record shop to buy their records, that combination killed them like many others.
@rickmcarthur675 жыл бұрын
It didn't kill them at all! It made them Goth/Rock legends much in the same way that The Doors became legends of the Psychedelic 60's without anyone having to die for the cause! This was made all the more true as Ian Asbury was called into perform as a cover singer with The Doors remaining members a while back on some TV shows in the US! I agree that The Love album in some way was the pinnacle of their success if only for the purity of the songs unique aspects that helped bring the Gothic era of the 80's into the mainstream for the rest of the world, although not completely above that, as when I saw them at Wembley Arena in 1989 on the Sonic Temple tour, with a friend of mine from the US, they had got their magic back in spades after the overhyped and under written production of the Electric album and inconsequential tour that followed it! I was miraculously fortunate enough to meet and get my picture taken with Ian at a Killing Joke gig in '86 at London's Hammersmith Palais Ballroom, the photo is on my Facebook album-Rick Anthony McArthur.
@krasteff5 жыл бұрын
Rick McArthur, The goth rock legends that never play the 8 tracks they released on vinyl as SDC and DC, never after 1984 or maybe only Horse nation so as not to disturb the headbangers.
@DarrenGlen4 жыл бұрын
"How does a band go from being on top musically then go down change format over the years but still survive?" By essentially dumping their audience for a new one...a bigger one....that ACDC already had formed for them. Lots of people turned off The Cult after 86...but a lottt more turned onto them in 87. Not the same faces tho. Massive risk

Hi ! I have another channel on which I upload bootleg shows (including the Cult) and I try to run them at 50-60 frames per second and to remaster them if I can. Nice. But what we are seeing here is the slow transformation of The Love into Electric Phase. Ian is dressing and singing much more like a punk/hard rock singer. Billy lost his cool haircut for this. Someone is TRYING to make J Stewart look better. Les looks like he crawled out of a sewer. Nevertheless, this merging phase was perfect because it gave the LOVE songs a bit more edge. Nothing beats The Cult playing Big Neon Glitter or The Snake...Jesus, those hits got swept under the rug. I love this band! Long live them!
@ElectricLabel6 жыл бұрын
Les Warner was fucking useless. He plods and hits his way through every groove, somehow Billy and Jamie manage to keep it swinging. Such a shame they lost Nigel when they did, right after Sanctuary. Mark Brzezicki did a great job on the rest of the album, but even when they had great drummers like Charlie Drayton they never quite had the alchemy they had with Nigel Preston. There's a live recording of Les Warner trying to play "Horse Nation" at the Brixton show on the Electric tour and its a complete travesty. Thankfully he didn't play on Love and that album is a masterpiece. It was a sad day when they became just another rock band.
@andrepereira7444 жыл бұрын
Fuck off,they never were just another rock band!

Charlie Drayton played bass on Ceremony as far as I know. But I agree it´s a shame they lost Nigel Preston, I would have loved to have him in this period also. Then we never know what would have happened during the Electric-era.
