Dude, A Wrinkle In Time was a TOTAL acid movie. I saw that at Eastridge and I was the ONLY person in the theater. To be peaking when Oprah's face fills up the entire screen and she's dressed all crazy was to much, I was DYING!! Good thing the 22 line was there to take me back home cuz the flashbacks were cracking me up like a MF. When I saw the trailer for CATS when I was @ the movies, I was HELLA horrified, like WTF, but not in a good way.

There was already a Cats movie, the 1998 one. It was basically just a stage recording but it was better received. This goes to show that just because you can do expensive CGI doesn't mean you should. Practical effects are the way to go

You're not wrong. While the 1998 version had major cuts to some numbers to fit it's 2 hour time slot, at least that version had some form of energy and passion behind the songs and story. It's the better version to watch

Things like the Room, or one of my other favorites The Last Vampire On Earth, is hilariously bizarre in almost every moment of screentime. I love re-watching them. I don't want to re-watch Cats. I think it is relevant to point out, when someone complains about a plot, to try to clarify that the plot that the movie "reimagined" was already confusing. The film made A LOT of other mistakes but what bothers me (as a huge fan of the musical) is that they tried to make the plot, I suppose, more comprehensible while making an absolute shite of it. And then add the rest...

It was supposed to be years ago. The character art and concept designs are beyond gorgeous, with the context of the London Blitz as the backdrop. But then Spielberg's animation studio was shut down and no one wanted to pick up the project.

Cats doesn't work on film because it is all spectacle. I understand why people don't like it on stage, it is super hard to understand. I don't particularly like the story, but I love the design and music (but OG Rumtumtugger not rap)

Cats is absolutely amazing live and I've seen it 4 or 5 times in different countries. The plot takes a while to get into but it's pretty obvious if you just listen to the lyrics :) The problem (haha, one of many!) of the movie is that it tried to crowbar way too much plot into what is ultimately just a spectacle (the worst part of the play, which is only even present half the time in staging it, is all the Gus theatrical stuff with the Pollicles and whatnot, and the weird subplot where Macavity kidnaps Deuteronomy).

There's a theater near me that hosts "rowdy cats screenings". It is pretty consistently sold out. Another $3 theater just started screenings. The audience tends to react strongly. Lots of laughs. A mix of people that are fans of the show and singing along, groups of people just there to laugh at it. It's a really fun theater experience.

@@AmandaTheJedi Its happened in the past to. Quite a few movies have had alterations done and sent out post release to fix up problems. It also was happening in the 90's with TV, which for the people that don't know in the 90's TV channels were all local, and were sent shows to broadcast. Not everyone in the US was seeing the same shows at the same times ect. Some regions would air shows out of order as an example. A famous example of that was the orginal 1992 X-Men cartoon. The first two episodes were so rushed that the lip syncs, animations, and sound effects were heavily wrong. A "fixed" version was sent to studios for the reairing's though.

I think the Art KZbinr LavenderTowne had a really good idea of how to translate the cats to the big screen. Her idea was for the whole movie to be more of a masquerade ball, where instead of actual cats they are just humans in masquerade masks that look like cats. She drew Victoria and she was just a normal ballerina with a masquerade cat mask. I feel like this would have been much better as a big movie than what we actually got, at least visually, and as a CATS musical fan, I would have preferred it this way...

The visual effects themselves (despite being unfinished) were actually quite well done by the VFX artists in the time they had available. They aren't perfect and are probably still unfinished. It's the art direction itself that put most people off. If you enjoyed the film, that's great. Most people disliked the film with a passion that would stun a bantha at fifty yards.

The bit about editing being done up until the morning of the premiere reminds me of my freshman musical. My high school theater director had had the job for 50 years and it was going to be his last season so he wanted to go out with a bang. He picked Camelot. We were not equipped to do a show on the scale of Camelot. Opening night was our first full run. It was terrible and I'm glad my first introduction to musical theater was such a disaster because it made me feel really good about the rest of my high school drama career. Cats doesnt want to remind me of Camelot but it does.

So apparently Tom Hooper took the same approach to making this movie as I did to writing papers for my English class last year- franticly finishing it at 8am the day it’s due and turning in a barely finished and unpolished mess. The difference being that I was a college student taking a class that‘s not even part of my major and he was an academy award winning director making a movie with a budget of nearly 100 million dollars.

Unironically loved Cats. And listen, I can see why people might be put off by the graphics (I just pretended they were wearing costumes and makeup and it was fine) or some of the more questionable directing decisions ("cat school") but if you're gonna tell me you didn't like _any_ of the songs other than Beautiful Ghosts then I'm not sure you're even being honest with yourself. Really hoping the sing-along "Jellicle ball" idea takes off, even if most of the audience is there to enjoy it ironically.

Ian McKellen, the couple you mentioned, my 90 yr old great-aunt: my theory is that the generation above boomers doesn't clock the uncanny valley the way we do. Do I think they thought claymation king Kong was realistic or were they willingly suspending dissbelief? No clue. But the way my great aunt reacted to the cats trailer- saying it looked amazing and so many colors and how creative- I'm pretty sure there's generational bias on display when it comes to cats. i watched this when i was 14 with my family and i was surprised that many were "disturbed" by the cgi and all but surprisingly i wasn't lmao, i feel like i've seen worse cgi in my entire life than this

It's even worse than 69 million as the studios don't get all the money from foreign box offices as the distributors take a big cut. I've heard it tends to be they get around half of the foreign money they make. So yikes!
