I have spent a lot of childhood on long car rides through Ohio and I'd pass the time reading billboards and yes this is very accurate. This is a high percentage of the billboards. But also in Ohio and the states around Ohio, there is usually a good amount of ads for adult stores occasionally right after or right next to the bible ads.

Most people here are pretty nice and when I moved to a different part of the city there was a great hot dog stand I used to go to after a long night with drinks, cashier and I would talk as they got my order. as an ohioan and ardent defender of ohio, if we really want to bring more people (esp young people) into the state, we need some serious changes at the state government level. ohio was supposed to redistrict last year in order to have representative districts (which would lessen the republican supermajority). the redistricting committee has presented unfair map after unfair map, going behind the backs of bipartisan commissions. fortunately, the ohio supreme court keeps shooting down the unfair maps, but it's gone on for so long that we have to have a second primary election for the races which would be affected by the redistricting. if businesses don't have to pay taxes, who do you think is paying for this second primary? that's right. ohioans. also, it's fucked that they have grants for people who are moving to ohio but ohioans aren't being compensated for being born there

As a fellow Ohio defender, I fully agree. I have a lot of love for Ohio and the potential it has and the people who live here, and I think we get a lot of undue hate from the rest of the Midwest, but I refuse to defend Ohio blindly. Our state government is truly despicable and the leadership of both parties have proven time and time again that they genuinely could not care less about the people they're supposed to represent. Why are they giving grants for people to move here when they won't put programs in place to help Ohioans gain access to these better paying/supposedly more necessary quaternary sector jobs

I moved to Ohio from California to be closer to my family 6 years ago and I have a major love-hate relationship with Ohio (I've lived in semi-rural, post-industrial suburban, and urbanized parts of the state). Right now, I can afford to rent a 1br apartment in a decent neighborhood in Cincinnati by myself as a cook. I never would have been able to do this living in California. That being said, there's a total lack of investment in Ohioans and I've seen just how much harder life has been for my cousins who grew up here. "Come to Ohio, we have so many vacancies for high-paying jobs" is leaving out "We refuse to invest in the people already living here and we won't afford them a chance for a better quality of life." Our smoking rate is insane (look up "Tobacco Nation"), most of our politicians are Nazi-sympathizers (when they aren't literal Nazis themselves - I wish I were exaggerating), our public schools are chronically underfunded, resegregation and redlining are rampant, workers have no rights when compared to California (no guaranteed breaks, no holiday pay), life expectancy is low, drug overdose deaths are high, and access to healthcare is limited in most counties with many rural counties relying on monthly pop-up clinics. Ohio is full of natural beauty and great outdoor exploring opportunities, our 3 big cities really do have a lot of cool things to do, people are friendly and helpful (when you're White), but it truly is not a great state if you are anything less than wealthy

As someone who moved to Eastern Ohio from Western Pennsylvania. Nope. I literally travel the state line between them daily. I literally had to move 30 minutes away from work because I couldn't afford housing in PA. I have to save money on food by buying food in Pennsylvania and gas in Ohio because they don't tax oil as high as Pennsylvania does. I literally have to 'cheat the system' to be able to live because the places I've lived my entire life are so deep red they're cheating themselves out of benefits in order to protect themselves from "them" (whoever that is in this conversation) Honestly, I'd like to set this whole campaign on fire. My road is one big pothole, but we can spend state funds on bringing conservative owned big businesses into the state. I was going to mention this because I grew up in Pennsylvania and my parents still live there and what usually happens is conservative or religious people "flee" PA because they feel like Ohio is better. However, the only ones who seem to stay are the religious (Amish, Mennonite, Brethren, etc.) Everyone else seems to make their way back after a year or so or go on to try a different state. Pennsylvania definitely has its fair share of problems but I would argue, especially in the more rural parts where I live we have cheaper costs of living and just as many job opportunities, which spoiler alert isn't many.

Yeah as an Ohioan i have NO idea what they mean by “walkability” in that one part. Everything is so spread out here and in my hometown there aren’t really sidewalks, and if there are they’re super awful. Sometimes in the winter snow is plowed onto them. It’s insanely car oriented here. In more urban areas it gets better, but Kent has one of the worst walk-abilities in the state and its urban.

Oh god, I went to Kent State and the school was terrible about this, even though the campus is supposed to be walkable. They would just throw some salt into the sidewalk and say, “Good enough!” Meanwhile, all of the students are slipping and falling on their asses just trying to get to class. One time, I fell and a guy tried to help me up, and the ice took him out, too. A girl tried to help him and… it just kept going like that. It was like a skit. We all had a good laugh after we realized we were all okay, but it still shouldn’t have been that bad.

Ohioan here :) this state also has a HUGE problem with brain drain as well. we do rank decently well with our higher education institutions so people come here for college and then immediately turn around and leave/native Ohioans leave immediately after college to go elsewhere. Property prices are insanely low here. In my area of Cincinnati, you can have a 4 bedroom McMansion in an amazing school district for just $500k. The architecture is tacky as hell and there's barely any public transit, but hey! It's a house! I don't actually want many businesses to move here, though. What we REALLY need is to push more local businesses. There are so many locally-owned stores that are going under because they're left in the dust. We also already have an issue with gentrification, and this might exacerbate it. Also, as much as I adore my state, I think people from California would die from the unpredictable weather. The high can literally change by 40 degrees over the course of a day. I've seen a day where it was 75 followed by a full-on snowstorm multiple times. It is KILLER if you are prone to migraines, sinus issues, or throat troubles.

as a (somewhat) real estate person, here's what happened with that whole zillow thing: zillow would buy houses like an opendoor/offerpad thing (both major real estate corporations who buy your house "stress-free") and then fix them up. but more like having a broken leg and putting a bandage on it, like a kitchen with very outdated appliances would just be painted. i went into a zillow-owned house about three times because it was so funny to me. it was a wreck on the inside and they just painted it and replaced the sinks/toilers/tubs/showers. and it was like 80s wrecked. so people of course with houses like that zillow was having some trouble selling their houses. as they kept dropping the prices they kept losing money. sometimes they bought houses, put a bandage on them, and then sell them for less they bought them for. so they stopped buying. i have a feeling what jobsohio may trying to be doing is get more people to move there because they need employees and people to work. they also want to grow their economy. so then they're getting two in one. out there but it's also possible they're trying secretly to drive up the real estate marking prices without being like "please buy a house we need money". i dont think that would be what they're doing but it would be interesting. but yeah. ohio is a state and i cant say much more since ive never lived or worked there (ive been then once and i can say i dont think its number one for friendly people.). but this just feels kinda weird. like, if you wanna move to ohio, go move to ohio. a billboard isn't gonna change someone's dreams.

It doesn't make sense for most people in major cities to move to Ohio. Unless you have a stable 100% remote job you're gonna take a *huge* pay cut. Even if the cost of living is lower, not all industries offer proportionally competitive salaries or a variety of job options in a place like Cleveland, let alone the rest of Ohio. It would make more sense to advertise regardless of location online (wider reach and much cheaper) or advertise to mid-size cities with a similar average cost of living. If they really wanted a successful campaign, they would offer financial incentives like some other less populated states have in the past few years.

Yeah like if you live in NYC for example yes your costs of living will be lower if you move but so will your paycheck. Which brings up a ton of tax questions for me I live and work in the same area like how does that work for remote? I feel like these are the more important questions a lot of these ads are not being upfront about. Another thing is infrastructure. In NYC we have a robust public transport system and are not as car dependent as a place that’s more suburban so you’ll end up buying a car anyway and I think in terms of overall costs if will maybe be no different then before. I’m kinda just guessing but these are things I would want to know going in.

I was working as a barista in San Francisco before I moved to Cincinnati (this was pre-"Move to Ohio" campaigns). While cost of living is lower here and I can live in an apartment alone (a true luxury for a San Franciscan), I am making considerably less than I used to and will never be able to afford to move back, even if I end up getting a high-paying, salaried job. It's something I didn't consider before I moved, and truly urge anyone living in a HCOL city to carefully consider before leaving. When you leave for a much less expensive place, you are giving up the choice to go back

I live in Columbus, OH and like many other people commenting, I had no idea this was a thing. Ohio is as a whole is kinda meh unless you live in one of the big cities - particularly Cincinnati, Cleveland or Columbus. Columbus is nice because we are still fairly affordable but have a lot of things to do. As weird as it sounds, there is a lot of nerd culture here. There are multiple bars dedicated to board games or arcades. We have decent concerts. We have cool conventions. Lots of museums. We have a lot of technology oriented jobs. We are also a "food test market" so we get some fun stuff from that. But if you go like 40 minutes in any direction, it becomes corn laden hellscape.

Now, as we all know "the land" has its issues ("at least we're not Detroit!") but there are good museums here, the orchestra is fantastic, and it's practically next to Ohio's only national park. Ohioan here. Very intriguing! I had no idea about all this, but of course I'm not gonna see ads to move to Ohio when they already got me. The best argument I can see for moving to Ohio is if you've already made your money in the big markets and/or have a fruitful career where your salary is coming with you. You can get a nice house in a nice area for a fraction of a fraction of the price you'd pay in many other states. But if you're starting out here it's going to be tough to make enough money to afford your apartment, let alone an actual house. Ohio is not bad. I don't plan to settle down here, and I wouldn't recommend it to most, but I'm sure there are some people it'd be a good fit for. Ultimately...most of the country is more alike than most of us want to think. My sister lives in Sacramento suburbs, and that's probably more culturally similar to my city in Ohio than it is to Los Angeles.

We lived in Ohio for 3 years (Cincinnati). It was fine, but that's basically all it was. Not sure about all of Ohio, but Cincinnati is one of those places where people don't leave. They were born there, raised there, went to high school there, went to college there, have all of their friends there, and then settled down for the cycle to start over again for their children. It felt impossible to make friends there no matter what we did because everyone already had all of their friend groups from childhood/high school/college, so there wasn't really room or time for people that weren't them. I've found more friend prospects after living in Seattle because at least here there are a lot of transplants. Yeah, it's definitely expensive, but there are also a ridiculous amount of good restaurant options, parks, and things to do. I can't say the same for Cincinnati.

[sighs] This is so much to unpack. As someone born and raised in NE Ohio for the first 18 years of my life, I feel that most people don't understand the nuance of what is happening. Growing up was fine, I went to good schools, could walk to a few of them, got a good education and it was nothing remarkable. Cleveland has awesome museums and the CMA will get art installations that draw people from the surrounding area (entire Great Lakes) due to their excellent programming and amazing collection (and yes, it is free). However, as I came of age, my career choices have taken me far from Ohio since I can't get a job there. This has impacted everyone I went to high school with who went to uni or onto graduate school. None of us currently live in Ohio. The state gave us a great start and then lost us. On top of that, I can generally say we are left leaning/liberals. I tried my hardest to vote absentee in Ohio and managed to do so for 10 years until I moved back to the states and had to register in my current location. I'm certain part of the political shift has been to departure of left leaning professionals who now live elsewhere. At the same time the loss of the high paying industry jobs have all but disappeared that supported a lot of households as well as the loss of unions hurt a lot of people who didn't have a college degree. The rustbelt is called that for a reason, the complete loss of entire industries that had high paying union jobs. The zip code I lived in when I graduated high school had a household income of ~$55,000 a year. Ten years later it had dropped to $45,000. I haven't even looked at the 2020 numbers, but it can't be good. Many of these people now are frustrated and angry and are turning to the right to air their grievances abandoned by more moderates. This also doesn't even touch upon the fact that Ohio, like many parts of the Midwest, redlined the hell out of their cities and the racism surrounding it is complicated. I know that if I were not white middle class, I would have had a very different experience and would not have the advantages of the stability of my own family background. Also that my family's own financial stability was the result of the steel industry - which has drastically changed - most being pushed overseas in the late 90s early 2000s! The complete loss of small c conservatives that were once in the state died along with George Voinovich, who was an okay Republican. However, at the same time, Ohio would indeed benefit from more diversity and ALSO investing in its own people. It sounds bonkers, but having more liberal and diverse people moving to Ohio would greatly benefit the state, but this whole campaign is just dumb. When I was young and in my 20s, I could not see myself having the desire to return to Ohio. But as you get older it seems a sort of weird homing beacon turns on and you find yourself wanting to get closer to home . . . as you begin to run the numbers about cost of living/retirement/aging parents and all that stuff. Yet, the political climate makes me feel ashamed to be from Ohio, since it has made an epic turn to the right. When I flew back home in spring 2021 post covid vaccination, there were several people on my flight from California who were either 1.) moving to Ohio for financial/family reasons or 2.) visiting family who lived in Ohio for work. I likely will never return to Ohio and I have very mixed feelings about this; I wouldn't mind living there as long as I was in the Cleveland area but there are zero jobs for me in NE Ohio. I can also state that the weather in Ohio, isn't different than Pennsylvania, or Indiana or Ontario having lived all those places as well. So, if someone is complaining about the weather, it doesn't improve all that much crossing numerous state or national borders. Ultimately, if they wanted to be more successful with this crazy campaign, they should have actually thought more about how the state has room for growth and improvement instead of; it is nice and cheap.

I've been in Ohio a few times. My impressions? Cleveland closes down at 4pm on weekdays. When the suburbs stay open later than your cities then you have a problem. This basically sounds like Ohio wants people to move to Ohio and then create stuff that will make other people want to move to Ohio. That's kinda ridiculous. If they want people to move there they need to actually provide something that will draw people in. Maybe free broadband. You get big city amenities, culture, museums, good restaurants, neat bars, and charming architecture, all at a very reasonable price, but it seems everyone remotely interested in me lives elsewhere - which makes me want to move away.

The main thing that got me is them talking about the walkability but them SPECIFICALLY talking about schools because, yes, where I live the schools you CAN very easily walk to (though it takes 15-30 mins for two of the schools), but also like the biggest thing is that it's so so so much not a walkable state overall or at least outside of the big three C cities. Like I'm sure it's the same in other states but advertising to people in cities who are probably used to being able to walk to a convenience store to get a snack and try to make them move here where every store is like 15-20 minutes away by car (and you HAVE to use a car -- you'd be insane to try and cross the street) and also there's no public transport so you better have your license is like idk. Wild. Like you're absolutely right about how they are NOT doing a good job by being like "#2 in quality of life and small taxes!" like there's so so much more to that that a person needs to consider moving. Will say where I live is very beautiful though! That doesn't mean I'm not thinking about moving away though.

I swear, anytime I hear anything about my state, I'm just like "oh god, what did we do now???" I remember when I was in middle school when I think we were made to make an account with JobsOhio? and we didn't give a single fuck about it. Could be from where I'm from in Ohio, but most people are poor. You can't do shit or live nice unless you're already rich or upper middle class. It's really people with lots of money that come into Ohio that make it worse for people who've been living here most of their lives.

This comment. All of it! My sons and I do this "only in Ohio..." and "Ohio, of course" eyeroll thing when the usual crazy things are said/done. Ever notice how people are directed to the JobsOhio site for job hunting but there's never much on the boards, unless you're trained as a prison guard or have 3 Bachelor degrees in specialized fields? Everything else is fast food, gas stations and underpaid factories (assuming you have a way there and back, seeing as most are isolated along rural highways). Anything in between is usually a nepotism hire...someone's cousin or friend gets those.

Ohio is a dark hole . I’ve lived overseas and moved here “temporarily “ - came back after living in south Florida . It’s affordable, dark , and very sad . Trying so hard to get out of here but the cost of living pulls you back by your ankles . It’s like every scary movie. Oh and the lack of diversity is what drives me crazy .

The housing market is nightmare here in texas, even apartments are going for insane prices. A small studio youd expect to pay around 800-900 is going for up to 2000 and thats ridiculous around here

Also, as a Boston Masshole, I sell Boston with the walkable neighborhoods, easy access to mountains and ocean, number of events and the huge local art scene. I'm 27 and I've been thinking about leaving Dallas. I like it here I just want to go need new scenery. Like Amanda said taxes aren't something I would base my decision on where to live on. I would base it on lifestyle. In Dallas we have a lot of different art festivals and cultural events I like going to along with good bar hopping. Dallas and Austin have similar home prices, but Austin is attracting people because it's a unique city with a cool vibe. What lifestyle would I get if I moved to Ohio?

I like living in Ohio because it’s chill. Cheap to live here. It’s very easy to travel to those big cities and visit. Me I don’t really want to pay much to live somewhere. When I can save and visit places without the cost of living there. The space thing is real tho. I live in on the Lake Erie shores near cedar point the amusement park. There’s stuff to do you just have to go out and find those places. Just like the Ohio slogan “So much to discover”

I’m an Ohio born and raised and the first thing I planned to do when applying to colleges was to leave Ohio. And I succeeded because in like two months I’ll be studying in Pittsburg. The reason I’ve been telling everyone why I wanted to leave Ohio was because it’s boring, but that’s not true, There are things to do here. my only problem is that I live in a small town. It takes about 30 minutes to go to anywhere that has to do with shopping or entertainment. There is a lack of diversity, and a lack of real spirit and community. As a young person there is also a lack of representation that I want to see. I am a queer non religious woman. And In Ohio that is everything you are not supposed to be. Everyone talks about the southern states but Ohio is so conservative that I can’t stay here anymore. I just voted for the first time and I felt like it won’t even matter. I bet a lot of peoples voices feel like they don’t matter and that is why we are leaving.

Ohio has some really nice outdoorsy areas. Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati have nice downtown areas. But other than that, Ohio is just another rust belt state with barely anything going on. Quality of life for someone used to Southern California weather would be in for a serious and sudden decline with the Great Lakes induced weather systems. Especially on the northern side of the state.
