I currently work part time as a waitress and there was this "celebrity" who used to work for us (bcs the owner REAALLLYYY cares abt fame n publicity) and jesus christ never have I met a person so entitled to themselves before. Basically he intentionally took breaks when the restaurant was busy (the rest of us usually take breaks before or after our shift, but no he just stopped in the middle of the chaotic situation and said "kay im gonna eat lol"), and he told the chef to cook him this dish that takes a longer time to cook, and bcs the chef thought it was for a customer he cooked it only to find out that it was for our dear "celebrity." Not only did he slow down our work during busy hours by interrupting our chef, he literally took his fucking time eating his food until the crowd died down. And what's worse, the owner always sided with him, literally blaming me for not refilling water that was located outside the kitchen that the "celebrity" was conveniently standing next to when my job that night was mostly inside the kitchen prepping dishes. I don't care if you're rich or famous. And acknowledging the fact that other ppl would see u differently is important too. I noticed a pattern with youtubers who have remained “relatable” like Sofia Nygard, Jenna Marbles, Pewdiepie etc. are often people who started their channel’s once they were adults and often already in their early 20’s. It makes me wonder if there is a correlation and if having a few years of adulthood and the struggles that come with it have allowed them to remain a bit more humble and levelheaded. This doesn’t necessarily mean that someone who starts their channel in their 20’s is automatically a better person, they just are more likely to understand the privileges that KZbin stardom have awarded them. But it’s just a thought!
@ej83585 жыл бұрын
Hannah Koenig That actually makes a lot of sense! Another KZbinr who I think is still relatable is Colleen Ballinger, and maybe it was because she worked so hard as an adult to get where she is now. Maybe it is just a matter of maturity and whether you have been exposed to adult issues…

If I suddenly earned a lot of money, I’d definitely buy nicer things, move into a bigger house, etc. I think I’d be a bit hypocritical for calling someone else unrelatable for doing it. I think it’s a bit simpler than that. My theory: These people were always unpleasant. it’s just becoming more obvious to their audience the more they share about themselves.
@audreyhatten43385 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. It is hypocritical, and even then why is it so important for everyone to be relatable in the first place. It is bothersome if they still “act relatable” so I do get that. As someone who has grown up very very poor, it shouldn’t be competition of who is the poorest/ most relatable or deserving of nice things.
@ambercaitlin73645 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's what it's about... It's not that that's unrelatable, like if you take Jenna Marbles, yeah she lives in a big house, has 3 dogs and buys a lot of useless items to carry out all of her weird videos... but people still enjoy them! It's because the essence of who she is as a person hasn't changed. She's still loud and funny and weird and people click with that because that's who she's always been (imo she's actually even gotten better with time because she's stopped giving a shit about whether or not her videos are going to fit the algorithm/be well received). It's more like if your content has always been relatable and people like you, and then you make a crap ton of money and this completely different lifestyle is suddenly your main goal, but you're still pushing the relatability thing - that's annoying. Not because you can't be proud of what you've got, but because that's all that matters to you anymore and you've lost touch with an audience that was primarily interesting in you because u were "just like them". Then it gets worse when and they can't tell why people are complaining about how entitled they're acting, or make weird "you changed" videos
@Paiinx5 жыл бұрын
i think that’s not the point of the video, there’s nothing wrong w making money, just that a lot of people let it affect their content in a way that’s detrimental to their original brand, creating a disconnect that makes them unlikeble to their original viewers

You aren’t meant to be a brand. You are meant to be a person. Its hard to watch KZbinrs and celebrities turn themselves (personality, like-ability, daily activities) into a show for people to watch and buy into. Dangerous game. Especially when you are young and media savvy. Learn to live life without an audience. It’s okay to create but keep it separate from everything you are.

The thing with Jeffree is that his entire channel is based on his elusiveness so if he appears unrelatable, it's an intentional effort. With him, I don't mind the extravagance. I have a problem with the people who try to appear relatable but aren't or those who actually built their channel on being relatable.
@Elethyl5 жыл бұрын
And it is funny that Jeffree seems much more relatable than those other youtubers who try too hard to seem relatable :D Like Tiffany said in the video, probably because of his personality. What I love most about him is a) he is a damn scorpio, b) like majority of the scorpios, he doesn't forget where he came from, he keeps it real.
@Abcflc5 жыл бұрын
I agree but I also think that there is a blatant shallowness and willful ignorance about his purchases (recently saw a documentary on how African immigrants are being exploited in leather tanneries in Italy to produce handbags for all of the luxury brands). He mentions once in his videos that he donates to an LGBT cause but he doesn't seem to educate himself with other causes like the impact his lifestyle has on the environment (cars, flights, junkfood, leather goods etc). When you are that rich you have a responsibility to inform yourself and change the world with your power and influence. You are one of billions who is lucky enough to do so- and I say this from a place of admiration given that he is a self made millionaire.

I don’t mind if a KZbinr has money, but please don’t minimize your wealth, act poor, or patronize your non wealthy viewers. Shane: acts poor, but clearly has money. It’s obnoxious. I like him, but not a fan of the “I’m poor” line. Jeffree Star: clearly has money and is honest about how much money he has. I’m cool with it. He has earned it, worked for it, and doesn’t pretend he lives a modest lifestyle or patronize those who don’t. And that’s just his personality, so it works for his channel. Jenna Marbles: the personification of humility. I will never tire of watching her. Ace Family: I think there fast food worker video says it all. They are awful.

I feel like I have trouble unsubscribing or “letting go” of youtubers that I used to relate to once they become out of touch or tone deaf. It’s like breaking up with a friend (who has no idea you left lol) For me it’s not that people have money but when that becomes their personality it’s hard to watch. I feel like even people that aren’t rich like to have nice things and save for pricey stuff but it’s not their whole personality.
@lexis.60755 жыл бұрын
I agree. By the time a youtuber has become rich and their channel is at 10 million subscribers, you yourself have been a subscriber for that 6 year journey so it isn't easy to unsubscribe. I think youtubers forget that. I think they forget that by the time that youtuber has made it big, it took them 6 years to get there so the same normal people have followed them that entire time and invested time and their emotions into connecting with the youtuber that the subscriber can't just walk away. And during that 6 year journey, because they have maintained being relatable for so long that these channels may not necessarily be picking up other rich young people as new subscribers. The content is changing, but not the viewers.
@crazykenna5 жыл бұрын
i'll unsubscribe if someone makes one video i don't like. youtube is parasocial. they're not your actual friends you're not going to hurt their feelings. i like how bo burnham put it when he said, 'Stop sticking with artists through thick and thin. One of my favourite KZbinrs, Bestdressed, is a really good example of how you can make money and still be relatable. She started KZbin as a very poor college student and based a lot of her content around thrifted fashion- she still thrifts a ton because she lives in expensive places, so her cost of living is much higher. But she also recognises the fact that she's no longer struggling with 5 roommates; she explicitly said that it's why she stopped making jokes about being poor: she no longer felt like she was in a position to do that. A lot of her content is also relatable regardless of income, things like self-image, sex-positivity, and trying to plan for what you want out of life.

she's also super upfront and honest about the things she doesn't like and politely tells her audience to stop doing it. It's pretty refreshing to see a youtuber who treats her fans like adults who understand boundaries.

The thing about jenna is even when her content is sometimes about how rich she is (e.g. buying a massive house) she stays humble during it. She recognizes her privilege and talks about how lucky and happy she is to be able to do this. So you can feel happy for her because she achieved a dream rather than focusing on the costs.

no name she also clearly doesn’t just spend her money on lavish items. She had the money to buy a big house for a loooong time, but she waited, like an adult, until she could buy the house she absolutely wanted and had plenty of bank left.

I took a break from her videos for a while and when I came back, she was the same sweet and funny Jenna as always. Most times when I take a break and return, they are completely different, like Shane, I’ve completely stopped watching his videos.

im in the age category that has seen the "girly girl exaggerated" content (even though I was a little late) and also the "white girl who will probably move to la" era that's happening/winding down? and it's really just shocking. they really are so different but it seems like other things follow suit, (musically->tiktok) (Instagram changing) (vidcon->playlist) and I guess the new "relatable aesthetic" content creators are changing a lot and it's very interesting to see how they are going to change a new wave of social media culture. (I think it's kinda already going downhill with aesthetic culture kinda turning to flex and unrelatable culture with some creators) but overall how this is going to change.
