The old style single cylinder Holset worked well . Never seen a piston failure . Unloaders were easily replace in the field . They would carbon up however a revised head design cured this problem . The Wabco compressor unloader was not reliable on the ISX-15 or on the 6BTA’s . Always look forward for your videos .

I agree. You could get the old compressors pumping air on the side of the road. The wabco head assembly is an engineering nightmare in my opinion. And now the current engines we bought the head is not field repairable. Giving cummins some benefit of the the doubt once they moved the air comp inlet pipe to stop egr entrance that really helped to stabilize and make more reliable the wabco head. Our favorite saying at the shop is " rocket science systems belong in space not in trucks that live in road salt and rain"

Good as always Joe! The Wabco compressors have never really impressed me. I can remember trying to use ATF on the CM871's and CM876's to get the unloader piston to free up so that silly sliding leaf could go from unload to load. Had a couple on E-Tech Macks I just converted those to Bendix! The Paccar MX used a twin cylinder Wabco on EPA10 and 13' and those had trouble with the front ball bearing failing, which would cause the shaft for tandem fuel/power steering pump to fracture and snap so you lost power steering assist shortly before the engine died! The EPA 17 MX went to single cylinder Wabco as standard compressor and those have pretty high failure rate for the heads failing and allowing compressed air in cooling system. No one ever has the head in stock and I think folks are gun shy of doing it because of the past ones having ball bearing failures. Other than that, they can flow some CFM!

One would think by now they would have been able to make a bullet proof compressor that will run the life of the engine. New is not always better but it does always bring a new set of problems to figure out how to handle.

Wonder why they don't just have the air intake tube for the compressor plumbed into the tube between the engine air filter and the turbo inlet? That would be nice cool clean air.

Starting with the 2021. X15 they do that. So that carboning issue has been solved.

Hello "Engine Shop Joe" I saw that in your channel have some problems. For these problems your channel is not much growing. Not getting much engagement. If you can solve these problems, Your channel will get more engagement. If you can give me permission I can tell to you about these problems. Can I tell here or email? Okay?

I appreciate the offer but no thanks. I am not looking to grow a big channel I am looking to help people who own cummins engines. Thanks
