While our son wasn’t born as early as your babies, we still spent a month in the NICU. He’s our only kid so being a parent was brand new and we were thrust into a chaotic traumatic birth and sent 2 hours away to a bigger hospital. I never expected to be celebrating milestones like him wearing clothes the first time, when he could be bottle fed for 48 hours straight without complications, etc. I just assumed those would be givens.

I know a few people whose children have autism and they are superheroes to me, though I know they see themselves as any other parents who want the best for their children.

All parents of special needs kids have that constant weight over them….what will happen to our kids when we die? In CT, adult children with special needs have to wait til the last caretaker dies before placement into a group home or residential care facility…..if any have openings. So, not only does the child lose his (elderly) parents, the only home he has known, but will be placed in a completely unfamiliar place with no one to advocate for him or to help transition. The US is way behind in planning and supporting these families. I have known parents in their 80’s still caring for their adult, aging disabled child. It’s a disgrace.

When I was a kid in the 70’s, there was an older couple whose son had intellectual disabilities. As they became more elderly, they moved to an independent living facility to help transition their son to the facility. (If he had been born 50 years later, his life would have looked very different.)

Did I get that right? You’re wanting people to help put your two eldest children in a facility? Wow

Why is it such a surprise when multiple embryos are implanted? Not facetious just wondering. And why do doctors implant high risk pregnancies? It’s financially, physically, and emotionally monumental. I don’t understand the risks taken. If “no parent should go through this”, would you advise this for another family?
