This song brings back so many memories for me. Time passes and people come and go throughout our lives. All the memories you have are all they are...mental pictures of memories. Everytime I hear this song I think of that one person that has filled my heart with all those mental pictures. We were 14 when we met in the summer of ‘84 and dated all through high school and spent all our time together. Then after high school we drifted apart. We went to college, married other people and had kids. I would see him through the years in passing. Even though our paths have led us in different directions, we have remained good friends. My favorite line in the song: “If only I’d known of the right words I could’ve held onto your heart”. He will never know the impression he has left on my heart and how much he means to me still to this day.

"We don't always have a choice how we get to know one another. Sometimes people fall into our lives cleanly--as if out of the sky, or as if there were a direct flight from Heaven to Earth--the same sudden way we lose people, who once seemed they would always be part of our lives."

@Bethany Buch I think that is amazing. You are meant to be with the person you're meant to be with! The father of your children is meant to be the father. At least that is how I see my son's father now. He is a part of my story in spite of letting me down time and time again. This doesn't mean I've forgiven him but more importantly that I have forgiven myself. The truth for you and your girls is there in plain sight. You continue being you which is nothing short of awesome. You are irreplaceable and I'm glad you have someone who appreciated you for YOU this entire time! I love that!

This reminds me of my late boyfriend Chris. He passed away from suicide and the last I saw him was in December. The last I kissed him, hugged him, felt his presence..He lived with an abusive father and had no mother because she had lost her battle to suicide when he was in middle school. He cried for a mother and craved that bond and love. I was the only on to keep him afloat for years until the one last fight he had with his father..he just couldn't take it anymore. The last thing I got from him was a message at 1:38 a.m. “ i love you so much .. and don’t ever think i don’t” i woke up to a flood of messages asking if I had heard the news, am I okay, and if I’m alive.. I thought it was one of those late night messages, but his best friend called and he said “Elizabeth, promise me you will be strong but.... Chris..shot himself last night” and i hung up Immediately. I couldn’t process it , my heart wasn’t beating, my hands were shaking and i screamed like I’ve never screamed before.I called him well over 40 plus times but..he never answered. He passed away on January 5th 2019. He had a polaroid camera and i have a picture of him at the lunchroom and I keep it at my bedside at all times. When he was laid to rest they buried him with a suit that he wore when we went to our last prom, the guitar necklace I gave him for Christmas that December and finally the polaroid picture he took of me at the lockers and they had put it in his pocket close to his heart. I’ll see you soon my love,my goofball and all. This song goes out to you Chris and to all who suffer loss but are brought together out of love. 🌻

In some form or another we have felt the same pain you endured in 1995. My pain came in 1997 and I was so messed up. It wasnt until years later did I realize it was a blessing and not a curse that it didnt work out. I can laugh now but not then. No one in my world understood my sickness but The Cure.

Thank you so much for your empathy, you don't know what it means when there are kind hearted people like yourself to give support. Yes, losing my parents "killed" me inside and it is a struggle to not have them here, to just talk to and give advice; simple things like that which may have been taken for granted before. You know? You sound like a good son. Cherish your time with your parents all that you can, for we are all here a short while; shorter than we realize.

+Joanna R No worries about showing empathy to your loss. I do love my parents with all my heart. Even though we get into arguments, sometimes there is lack of communication, miscommunication etc, I do know that I will love them until my heart stops beating. You're right, the little things in life are taken for granted at times and life is precious. I do see my mom more often and have nice and warming conversations - this I will cherish all my life - hopefully the memories will keep me alive.

Reading all the comments and support from people to those who have lost loved ones is restoring my faith in humanity! It’s June 14, 2020 and the riots after the pandemic are in every major city in the US. So much hate and division and destruction and ridiculousness going on right now. Love, understanding, kindness is the answer and THE CURE!!! Love and peace to you all, no matter what skin color you have, and pray for more cooperation and discussion and solutions to bring about peace and love! That’s what I loved about the 80’s, everyone seemed to enjoy each other’s company and a “party like” atmosphere everywhere, the music was awesome, from heavy metal hair bands to hip hop to rapp to alternative to European bands. I feel fortunate to have been a teenager in the 80’s! Peace and love to all! Stay safe everyone!❤️

Are you actually doing something to progress that peace and love for people of color? And do you actually understand the hate and division? If you don't and just spewing this ruining the vibe of the song, you're still just adding to it and it's going to get worse and continue. I support it all cause they're tired and I'm tired of my own skin color cause of second hand embarrassment.

I will never forget the huge blizzard of my youth that knocked out power for 3 days to our entire small town. All I had was my walkman, some double A batteries, headphones, and Disintegration. It was such a beautiful time..and cold. 💖

How can anyone down vote this?? It’s such an emotional song. His lament at not finding the right words to express how he truly felt cost him the love of his life. Such beautifully written lyrics and melody.

This is pure time machine stuff…transported back to 1989 with The Cure playing the soundtrack. Life wasn’t free of pain back then, but things were simpler and the losses were yet to come. This song is like a lullaby to me

I'm so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately I feel your pain as my husband took his life 14 years ago. I wish I could tell you it gets easier but the emptiness, guilt and hurt are always there. Thank you for sharing your story. It helped me get through this song without any tears. I'm always here for you. R.I.P. Chris. R.I.P. James ☮️💜

This song means so much to me. When I was about 2 months old, just a newborn, my father would put this song on when I would cry. I would stop crying while listening to this song. Now I'm 14 and I'm singing this song in a coffee shop and my whole family is coming. My dad cried when I told him I am singing this song.
