Heinshohn is absolutely correct. Big strong guys should lock their knees and ankles, keep their back straight, and shoot only with their elbow, wrist and fingers. Little guys should not be allowed to talk to big guys about FT shooting. They basically take a jump shot from the stripe, but don't quite leave the ground. Its honestly way more motion than they need, but because the have should good jumpers, taking a scaled down jumper makes sense for them. If someone had told Wilt to take a fadeaway for this FTs, he probably would have shot 70%.

Bro it’s crazy you say this because Alex Hannum, wilts coach, who was a great pioneer of the game look him up, but anyway he told wilt that he should just take a fadeaway jumper at the line.. but wilt thought he would cause so much attention to himself and his failures at the line that he never tried it..
@joshmorgan59332 ай бұрын
That’s debatable. Shaq and Ben Wallace both shot freethrows very similar to what you’re recommending and were terrible from the line. Deandre Jordan actually increased his free throw percentage dramatically to around 70% in the 18-19 and 19-20 season by doing the exact opposite of what you’re saying and creating a more fluid motion. I personally think the actual issue with a lot of bad big men free throw shooters like Wilt and Shaq is that they shoot with zero arc. They shoot at the hoop instead of into the hoop, because they don’t feel like they need to shoot with arc due to how high their release point is. But geometrically, shooting with low arc literally means you’re shooting at a smaller target because of the extremely low angle that the ball enters the rim. The smaller room for error is a major reason that they tend to brick so many shots off the front or back of the rim. Also, they don’t have a “shooter’s touch”, because they’re shooting flat lasers straight at the rim, and that doesn’t allow many favorable rolls because of the flat angle that the ball hits the rim.

Wilt could not hit free throws because of an eye issue. If he played now it would have been discovered and corrected. When in the flow of the game his eyes would have been at different distances from the rim with 2 different depth of fields and his brain would adjust. Willie Mays always was at an angle in center so he would have 2 different depth of fields and he was a legendary fielder because of it.

Wilt's bad free throw shooting makes his 100 point game even more remarkable. In the 1961-62 season, Wilt ave 61.8% from the free throw line. In that season, when he had his 100 point game, he hit 28 of 32 free throws, which is 87.5%. Using probability theory, the odds of him being able to hit 28 out of 32 free throws given his 61.8% average is .09%. That's roughly 1 in 1000.
@AbbeyNO9 жыл бұрын

I mean 100 points is unbelievable, but it could never happen in today's game. And had it happened, the game would've been ridiculed.

Bill Russell was also a poor free throw shooter, but it just doesn’t get talked about as much. Russell finished his career at .561 for his FT% to Wilt’s .511. And Wilt went to the line a lot more than Russell, because he was fouled more than most players and because he had to play more offense than Russell. Shaq shot .527, Dwight Howard shot .565, and DeAndre Jordan is at .474. Even the better outside shooting centers rarely shoot above .725 at the line. It’s just a difficult shot for the stronger guys in the league. I think it’s a combination of too much strength and psychological yips... I see that someone mentioned Dirk Nowitzki in the comments as being a good free throw shooter for someone of his size, but Dirk never had the strength of the some of the stronger NBA centers.

I think it's simply because they grew up never practicing free throws. We moved down to a place under the basket. In those days they used guide wires to stabilize the backboards. On one play, we grabbed them and shook the basket just enough to cause Wilt to miss a free throw ("he probably woulda missed anyway", John joked later). Wilt complained to the officials to let him reshoot, and as we started to run away he walked directly over to us with an angry face. The man was the largest, scariest human being I'd ever seen! I don't know if they gave him another shot or not as we ran away into the bowels of the stadium before we could be caught.

Remember they changed the rule so he could not run to the foul line and dunk the ball.They made many rule changes to stop the greatest of all time.I was living in Philly when he was in highschool.(he was Also playing semi pro under a assumed name).They have records from the semi pro league to prove it.besides the point,he was GOAT.

Yet in his 100-point game he made 28 of 32 (88%). Was like if he had enough motivation he could do basically anything. In his first two seasons he averaged 37.6 and 38.4 ppg. But the team had mediocre talent. In the off-season the coach made the off-hand comment to the press "Wilt is going to have to score 50 per game for us to win the championship." So he averaged 50.4. Incredible. Even what he did in his rookie year (37.6) is still the record ppg in the NBA.

I practiced with a 6lb ball for a yr plus, anytime during that time I shot regulation ball it would go over the fence 10 ft in the park, so I have a lot of respect for Wilt to be able shoot jump shots and finger roll the ball. It's very hard to have touch if your tricep muscles are super strong, exactly why most body builders can't shoot.

R.I.P Wilt. I saw a 1973 playoff game in Oakland, Lakers vs. Warriors. Lakers won by something like 30 points. Towards the end of the game a fan dumped a beer on Wilt's head when he was on the bench. Wilt turned around and lifted the fan of his feet. Staff quickly intervened and Wilt put the fan down.
@GalileoSmith6 жыл бұрын
The idea that Wilt was "too strong" to shoot fouls is a preposterous theory. I knew a guy who could throw a football 70 yards and could shoot fouls shots at over 80%. And Wilt was once a good foul shooter. So hos lack of ability was probably mostly in his head. Shaq wasn't a great foul shooter either. I remember Rick Barry offered to teach him how to shoot fouls underhand. Shaq turned him down for the reason that shooting fouls underhand was not manly. Kind of a sad mentality which Wilt did not have. I'd bounce the ball off my nose if it helped my shooting percentage.

@aarondigby98592 жыл бұрын
...and Shaq got the hell out of LA when he saw how serious Kobe was and went from team to team sand bagging everybody's salary caps: Phoenix, Boston, Cleveland and finally won a chip in Miami, because that Heat team was as thirsty for a chip as any team in history: Wade, Mourning, Williams, Peyton, Walker. They was so damn thirsty, the way they celebrated it was like they'd found the Holy Grail or something.

This is nonsense. Just like the excuse that their hands are too big is nonsense or that they're too tall. There are only two reasons a person is bad at free throw shooting. They either have bad form or it's psychological. Chamberlain's form is HORRIBLE when he shoots free throws. And the more he shot poorly, the less he believed he could hit them.
@supadicko9 жыл бұрын
Tommy Heinsohn is a hall of fame player, a hall of fame coach, won 8 championships as a player, 2 as a coach and shot 79% at the line as a power forward. I think he knows a bit more about it than you, so I would consider to stop calling it nonsense if I were you.
@darkyoungknightblood67549 жыл бұрын
Look at Steph Curry shooting with smaller balls, he even struggled because of the same reason - yet he's considered as one of the best, if not the best, shooters in NBA history.
@highdough27129 жыл бұрын
The Dictator I understand his credentials. It still doesn't mean he's right. Especially since I've heard other similarly credentialed people give other arguments. The problem with his argument is that history doesn't agree with it. Karl Malone was one of the strongest players in the league and he was a career 75% free throw shooter. He came into the league as a bad free throw shooter, but worked on it and became good. Moses Malone was a beast and he was a 76% career free throw shooter. Artis Gilmore was a 70% free throw shooter. No one can look at ANY of Wilt or Shaq's free throws and claim they had good form. That was their main problem.
@highdough27129 жыл бұрын
Dark Young Knight Blood You change ANYTHING and a good player is going to struggle because it messes with your muscle memory. You move the rim up or down an inch and a great shooter is going to struggle. I refuse to shoot on a rim that isn't 10 feet because whenever I've done it in the past it's completely screwed up my shot. That's the thing. Free throw shooting is about muscle memory, which is why the great ones can do it with their eyes closed. Take a look at 10 free throws from Wilt and all of them are different. That's a bad sign.

As a teen I saw Wilt at Boston Garden about 10 -12 times. After 3 0r 4 pregame warm-ups I started keeping track. He consistently hit 75 to 80% of his shots from 30 to 35 feet. Hardley bent his knees, most all his motion was in his elbow only. his upper arm was kept parallel to ground. Try that from 35 feet!
@Less1leg24 жыл бұрын
If you have done this type of free throw then you will understand the simplicity.The shot has back spin to keep the ball rotating backwards into the rim and backboard if the ball strikes hard. Far less rebound bounce back towards the shooter. Pretty effective shot really. Especially for really tall players.

Yao Ming is underrated because of how short his career was. In his prime, he was probably the 2nd best big-man to ever play. The guy wasn't super athletic, but he was considerably larger even than Wilt, had very polished skills, and as you say, he was a great FT shooter (and a great shooter in general).

@Rowgue518 жыл бұрын
I've seen tons of short guys that are great shooters that couldn't hit a free throw to save their lives too. Size and strength have nothing to do with it. It's mostly a mental thing. Players tend to shoot more naturally in the course of normal play. But when they're at the line with nobody guarding them and the game stopped they tend to overthink the situation and get in their own heads. It's very similar to guys that are good outside shooters that when given super wide open looks with time to measure the shot miss a lot more than anyone would think. Most players do very little practice at shooting stand still uncontested shots.

I'm a big dude I couldnt make a free throw to save my life. Had one coach who sat me down and said listen son. Ur a monster 6ft 220lbs by 6th grade, he said ur gonna be at the line as much as everyone else on the team combined, if you don't you are gonna be fouled to death to stop you. I spent like 3 months worth of practice just shooting foul shots, he taught me a few tricks and now I can sink em at around 80% and it won ball games for us
