thats why i think he just gave no ratfuck about freethrows, except maybe it was really necessary. he was able to make so much points during game.if u look at all the vids about him. he was able to shoot from evry angle with hi accuracy, so it would be easy for him to train freethrows. im sure, he just didnt care about freethrows at the end of his career.

Next you're gonna be saying that Dirk should just teach all players how to shoot. That's a stupid ass statement. Why are people comparing Dirk's shootings to Wilts. They don't have the same game. Dirk is a pure shooter, Wilt is not. You do know that most big men are not nearly as good shooters as point guards, shooting guards, and small forwards right?

Heinshohn is absolutely correct. Big strong guys should lock their knees and ankles, keep their back straight, and shoot only with their elbow, wrist and fingers. Little guys should not be allowed to talk to big guys about FT shooting. They basically take a jump shot from the stripe, but don't quite leave the ground. Its honestly way more motion than they need, but because the have should good jumpers, taking a scaled down jumper makes sense for them. If someone had told Wilt to take a fadeaway for this FTs, he probably would have shot 70%.

Bro it’s crazy you say this because Alex Hannum, wilts coach, who was a great pioneer of the game look him up, but anyway he told wilt that he should just take a fadeaway jumper at the line.. but wilt thought he would cause so much attention to himself and his failures at the line that he never tried it..
@joshmorgan5933
@joshmorgan5933 2 ай бұрын
That’s debatable. Shaq and Ben Wallace both shot freethrows very similar to what you’re recommending and were terrible from the line. Deandre Jordan actually increased his free throw percentage dramatically to around 70% in the 18-19 and 19-20 season by doing the exact opposite of what you’re saying and creating a more fluid motion. I personally think the actual issue with a lot of bad big men free throw shooters like Wilt and Shaq is that they shoot with zero arc. They shoot at the hoop instead of into the hoop, because they don’t feel like they need to shoot with arc due to how high their release point is. But geometrically, shooting with low arc literally means you’re shooting at a smaller target because of the extremely low angle that the ball enters the rim. The smaller room for error is a major reason that they tend to brick so many shots off the front or back of the rim. Also, they don’t have a “shooter’s touch”, because they’re shooting flat lasers straight at the rim, and that doesn’t allow many favorable rolls because of the flat angle that the ball hits the rim.

The man holds 72 NBA records - 72! And in several categories he is so far above the runner up that it's ridiculous. As he told MJ - "They changed the rules to make it easier for you. They changed the rules to make it more difficult for me." Yet some of the (no doubt younger) commenters say he shouldn't even be considered as the GOAT. Luckily ignorance can be easily cured. I will say it is too bad the top players of different generations will never meet each other on the court during their prime years. That would be something.

Wilt could not hit free throws because of an eye issue. If he played now it would have been discovered and corrected. When in the flow of the game his eyes would have been at different distances from the rim with 2 different depth of fields and his brain would adjust. Willie Mays always was at an angle in center so he would have 2 different depth of fields and he was a legendary fielder because of it.

Wilt's bad free throw shooting makes his 100 point game even more remarkable. In the 1961-62 season, Wilt ave 61.8% from the free throw line. In that season, when he had his 100 point game, he hit 28 of 32 free throws, which is 87.5%. Using probability theory, the odds of him being able to hit 28 out of 32 free throws given his 61.8% average is .09%. That's roughly 1 in 1000.
@AbbeyNO

@ddenuci

+AbbeyNO Except ... the Knicks were fouling Wilt's teammates for the sole purpose of sending the teammate to the free throw line, and thus keeping the ball out of Wilt's hands. So those two things offset.
@AbbeyNO
@AbbeyNO 9 жыл бұрын
ddenuci Sure, but people are depicting the game like Wilt was having the game of his life and couldn't miss a shot, when the whole game was a farse. The Warriors fouling to help Wilt reach 100, and the opposing team, as you said, fouling to prevent it. Especially in the fourth quarter. I mean 100 points is unbelievable, but it could never happen in today's game. And had it happened, the game would've been ridiculed.
@AbbeyNO
@AbbeyNO 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, I think Kobe's game was better. The "you go try it" argrument is such a classic pointless argument. I'm not a hater, I think Wilt is one of the best of all time. I just don't think his 100 point game was as great as everyone make it out to be.

He actually used to dunk his free throws in high school, and for most of college. And no, you did not misread that - it was technically legal to take a standing jump, and try and dunk the ball for a free throw in the 1950s, and his vertical was so insane that he often could do it. Bumping his average up massively. The NCAA banned it around the time he was getting ready to join the pros, so many people believe he just didn't practice throwing it that much because he was trying to dunk it!

+Wei Qi: Barry likes to say that he could 'help' people with their free throws, but I don't see many people consulting him. Barry does excellent demonstrations, but that doesn't mean he teaches well. The best free throw coach that I've seen is Ted St. Martin, the world record holder for the most consecutive free throws made by an individual according to the Guinness Book of World Records. He lives in Jacksonville, FL. He teaches kids his technique, and those kids whom St. Martin has coached shoot free throws really well.

I remember reading in his autobiography that Wilt often thought that it was initially a knee injury early in his career that started the downward trend. You'll notice that the early films show him bending his knees to shoot free throws. His later throws were all different variations of arm movement.
@gkprivate433
@gkprivate433 3 жыл бұрын
yes, he did not do what Nash the modern percentage free throw leader does Use all the body, all the big muscles. Similar to golfers putting, you don't want wristy movements. You want big muscle groups moving smoothly together. Wilt's flicking of the ball when he shot free throws looked terrible. He had so much arm strength he couldn't smooth things.

Bill Russell was also a poor free throw shooter, but it just doesn’t get talked about as much. Russell finished his career at .561 for his FT% to Wilt’s .511. And Wilt went to the line a lot more than Russell, because he was fouled more than most players and because he had to play more offense than Russell. Shaq shot .527, Dwight Howard shot .565, and DeAndre Jordan is at .474. Even the better outside shooting centers rarely shoot above .725 at the line. It’s just a difficult shot for the stronger guys in the league. I think it’s a combination of too much strength and psychological yips... I see that someone mentioned Dirk Nowitzki in the comments as being a good free throw shooter for someone of his size, but Dirk never had the strength of the some of the stronger NBA centers.

I think it's simply because they grew up never practicing free throws. If you're 7 feet tall, your greatest gift to the game is not your free throw shooting. the big European players know this, having grown up practicing all shot making as well as dribbling and passing, and other things we don't teach big men here.

Wow. Someone finally said it. I grew up very, very tall and thru 7th grade or so, basketball was me fighting over and over to make a layup with 8 hands beating the hell out of me. Starting in about 8th grade, fouls and finesse became a little more prevalent and I didnt have to shoot under the basket with three guys hanging from my arms. Relearning how to play under the rim was a huge challenge for a few years when I didnt have to power thru flailing limbs just trying to pull me down because there was nothing else to do.

He needed a higher arc. A higher arc maximizes the surface-area of the hoop through which the ball can pass. If your arc is flatter, you'll have a narrow, elliptical shape to get the ball through, rather than a big circular one.

I just cracked up. Long story short: I first saw this style of free-throws from my father. He was clueless about playing in general, but he was getting the free throws in that style. I kind of adopted it and even though I don't generally shoot like that, when I try it even 3s go in! Of course my friends had never seen that so when I was showing it to them , I was like 'yeah that's my papa's style'. Apparently, chances are, he picked that style up from WILT! Still cracking up, can't believe a legend like this shot underhand free throws! Epic.

Kendy Japri dude he went 20 for 25 from half court shooting free throws because he’s super strong and his arms are so long. So if he shot farther away he might have been better at shooting.

@differentkid1313 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewbartke4424 well it’s a fact. You can look up the video of him doing it. The reason he couldn’t is because it’s a free throw and he needs time to setup. If he picked up the ball and got set he would get trapped and half to chuck up a pass or shot. Also defense back then was much more physical than it is now, so he would never have the opportunity in the first place

In 1965 the Celtics played a game against Philadelphia in the Rhode Island Auditorium in Providence, which they would do every season. I was twelve and lived near there. My friend John and I rode our bicycles to the game and "snuck" in, or thought we did. The place was half-full at best at game time (the NBA wasn't a big time attraction then) and we entered through the big garage doors they'd open for "air conditioning" on the side of the old building during events. We moved down to a place under the basket. In those days they used guide wires to stabilize the backboards. On one play, we grabbed them and shook the basket just enough to cause Wilt to miss a free throw ("he probably woulda missed anyway", John joked later). Wilt complained to the officials to let him reshoot, and as we started to run away he walked directly over to us with an angry face. The man was the largest, scariest human being I'd ever seen! I don't know if they gave him another shot or not as we ran away into the bowels of the stadium before we could be caught.

Yet in his 100-point game he made 28 of 32 (88%). Was like if he had enough motivation he could do basically anything. In his first two seasons he averaged 37.6 and 38.4 ppg. But the team had mediocre talent. In the off-season the coach made the off-hand comment to the press "Wilt is going to have to score 50 per game for us to win the championship." So he averaged 50.4. Incredible. Even what he did in his rookie year (37.6) is still the record ppg in the NBA.

I practiced with a 6lb ball for a yr plus, anytime during that time I shot regulation ball it would go over the fence 10 ft in the park, so I have a lot of respect for Wilt to be able shoot jump shots and finger roll the ball. It's very hard to have touch if your tricep muscles are super strong, exactly why most body builders can't shoot.

R.I.P Wilt. I saw a 1973 playoff game in Oakland, Lakers vs. Warriors. Lakers won by something like 30 points. Towards the end of the game a fan dumped a beer on Wilt's head when he was on the bench. Wilt turned around and lifted the fan of his feet. Staff quickly intervened and Wilt put the fan down.

The idea that Wilt was "too strong" to shoot fouls is a preposterous theory. I knew a guy who could throw a football 70 yards and could shoot fouls shots at over 80%. And Wilt was once a good foul shooter. So hos lack of ability was probably mostly in his head. Shaq wasn't a great foul shooter either. I remember Rick Barry offered to teach him how to shoot fouls underhand. Shaq turned him down for the reason that shooting fouls underhand was not manly. Kind of a sad mentality which Wilt did not have. I'd bounce the ball off my nose if it helped my shooting percentage.

They was so damn thirsty, the way they celebrated it was like they'd found the Holy Grail or something.

This is nonsense. Just like the excuse that their hands are too big is nonsense or that they're too tall. There are only two reasons a person is bad at free throw shooting. They either have bad form or it's psychological. Chamberlain's form is HORRIBLE when he shoots free throws. And the more he shot poorly, the less he believed he could hit them.

The Dictator I understand his credentials. It still doesn't mean he's right. Especially since I've heard other similarly credentialed people give other arguments. The problem with his argument is that history doesn't agree with it. Karl Malone was one of the strongest players in the league and he was a career 75% free throw shooter. He came into the league as a bad free throw shooter, but worked on it and became good. Moses Malone was a beast and he was a 76% career free throw shooter. Artis Gilmore was a 70% free throw shooter. No one can look at ANY of Wilt or Shaq's free throws and claim they had good form. That was their main problem.

Dark Young Knight Blood You change ANYTHING and a good player is going to struggle because it messes with your muscle memory. You move the rim up or down an inch and a great shooter is going to struggle. I refuse to shoot on a rim that isn't 10 feet because whenever I've done it in the past it's completely screwed up my shot. That's the thing. Free throw shooting is about muscle memory, which is why the great ones can do it with their eyes closed. Take a look at 10 free throws from Wilt and all of them are different. That's a bad sign.

As a teen I saw Wilt at Boston Garden about 10 -12 times. After 3 0r 4 pregame warm-ups I started keeping track. He consistently hit 75 to 80% of his shots from 30 to 35 feet. Hardley bent his knees, most all his motion was in his elbow only. his upper arm was kept parallel to ground. Try that from 35 feet!

If you have done this type of free throw then you will understand the simplicity.The shot has back spin to keep the ball rotating backwards into the rim and backboard if the ball strikes hard. Far less rebound bounce back towards the shooter. Pretty effective shot really. Especially for really tall players.

I've seen tons of short guys that are great shooters that couldn't hit a free throw to save their lives too. Size and strength have nothing to do with it. It's mostly a mental thing. Players tend to shoot more naturally in the course of normal play. But when they're at the line with nobody guarding them and the game stopped they tend to overthink the situation and get in their own heads. It's very similar to guys that are good outside shooters that when given super wide open looks with time to measure the shot miss a lot more than anyone would think. Most players do very little practice at shooting stand still uncontested shots.
