As a theatre Technical Director and fan of this channel, the video spoke to my life's work. I use maths everyday for drafting and engineering sets, but especially for finance and payroll. My calculator is never out of reach. Everything in this video is spot on. I skipped math at theatre school but tutored all my friends who were struggling and never expected to have to do trig. THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO!!

"I got a C..." "That's good!" There's the difference between the US and the rest of the world: here in the States, a C is considered poor performance XD
@gvigary18 жыл бұрын
IceMetalPunk it's easy for those of us who are naturally good at Maths to belittle those who find it trickier, but we should always celebrate someone achieving a level which is a stretch FOR THEM. In any case, C is good enough, and I'd love more of my students to reach that level!
@IceMetalPunk8 жыл бұрын
gvigary1 No no, don't get me wrong, I'm not belittling anyone! I'm making a comment on the difference between the American education system and education abroad (and the culture surrounding both). Here in the US, a B is "good", but generally if you don't get an A, you're not doing well enough, whereas a C is poor and anything lower is equivalent to failure (even though a D technically isn't failing). It's that way for many parents, but also for schools: for instance, I passed a course with a D, but even though it was passing, my school wouldn't accept those credits for transfer because it wasn't high enough of a grade for them. Whereas I've heard from many people that in other countries, because a C is average performance, it's considered good performance, and anything above that is great. Even the grading scale is different: here in the US, a C is 70-79%, whereas I believe the UMS (British) scale has a C at 60-69%. In the US, that would be a D and be considered terrible. The US educational system is definitely broken; we put more emphasis on memorization than application, but at the same time, we put more pressure on our students to perform better. And our culture of "must get straight A's for your entire life or you're not good enough" doesn't help.
@IceMetalPunk8 жыл бұрын
Oh, and I just looked up the grading scale on the Scotland Highers: a C is 50-60%! In other words, it's literally the "average performance" that a C is often described as, but here in the US, a 50-60% is a failing grade. So there's even more of a disconnect between the cultures.

About the difference between an architect and a building engineer is: Architect: I want this building to bee airy. No walls across the building I want people to see through the building. Building Engineer: With five floors you say. Ok. but no kitchens on top two floors then. Architect: Why not? This is an office building and they need to have their cofee machines, tea kettles etc. We can't do two floors without kitchen. Why do youi insist on that. BE: It's just that this is on water front and come suitable wind from the sea side the top two floors will sway about 15cm from side to side and I do not want anyone with hot bewerage on their hand walking through that. Sitting down it's nothing, so they can still work if the building swings a little bit, but clearly no hot water anywhere. End result was not a building you can see through.

Computer keyboards arent designed to type in mathematic algorithms which is therefore more tedious - especially in the realm of trigonometry which this guys seems to be using a lot. The balance shifts back to the computer e.g. at numerical analysis which at least I wouldnt bother to do with a calculator. Ain't nobody got time fo dat as the Internet folk is saying ;)

Dude, mathematics is not her forté. She says she was artistic at school.Can you imagine a mathematician doing the artistic design? Do you get excited about everything that you talk about?

I don't want to be a snooty American, but "maths" bothers me so much. There's nothing wrong with having different words or pronunciations, but mathematics is not many things. You don't say "How many maths did you do?" you say "How much math did you do?". You don't say "Maths are good." you say "Math is good." So what is that 's' doing there? It's misleading. I'm doing my part. I use the clearly superior metric system any time I can. Please consider changing your dirty heathen habits for the good of my personal presences because that's reasonable!

Didn't I just explain? I'm going to be honest and tell you I don't know where this conversation is headed right now. You are right that I fall on the autistic side and maybe that's why or maybe you missed that my first comment was made to be tongue in cheek and sort of poking fun at myself. Yeah, there's plenty of words just like "maths" that I'd like to change and I have no power over it and it would be unreasonable to expect others to take on the fight for me. I am defeated?
