We're entering a fascinating time in collecting coloured $2 coins in Australia and I thought it was time to make a video discussing some of the opinions that are currently going around and would love to know your thoughts on where you see the market heading and how you feel as a collector.
Thanks for watching and for a wide range of coins, banknotes and other collectables come on down to www.ThompsonsCoins.com

Yes I agree that flippers are getting some seasoned collectors to stop as it’s harder for the average collector to purchase at the inflated RRP to an exorbitant secondary market price so they don’t want to collect at those prices.

Hi Matt, Great video with a really topical subject and something that is close to my heart. I started out collecting Royal Australian Mint product in the 80s, had a bit of a break and then got back into it five or so years ago. I try not to think of myself as a completionist but like anyone who accumulates any sort of series would love to see their collection completed. Unlike back in the day, when you would have to wait for annual releases or occasionally quarterly Mint product there is so much more product being released at the moment, it can be significantly hard to make sure you get everything. New collectors to the hobby come in with a significant backlog to attempt to collect and I feel like as new products come out the fear of missing out or FOMO is a mental challenge that the flippers take advantage of. The majority of my time collecting is spent noodling through old coins and that brings me significant joy and enough challenge to keep me really interested in the hobby. I want to keep this hobby for a long time so I do not have a great sense of urgency to complete everything as quickly as I can, but at the same time I want to be able to pick new product up as it comes out. The frustration I feel is more centred around the fact that sometimes I have to pay a premium for older coins. I should be able to pick up new releases at recommended retail and not have to continue to pay a premium even for contemporary coins. That's a long winded way of saying although I'm happy with the community of genuine collectors at the moment there is frustration with the way the mint cannot assure it's long time and future customers are looked after. I thank you for all your efforts within the collecting community And I enjoy all the soulful commentary you put behind all of your videos.

Agreed. Like Vietnam War Silver coins there are only 5,000 mintages. As collectors we should not complain the resale price is too high or it’s not fair if filppers use ‘bot’ or software to skip the queue system from mint website. The fact is that there are only less than 5,000 buyers having these coins 🪙. If you really need buy one then you pay whatever the price is 😅. It’s nothing different when people buy a property in auction. There could be many excuses for collectors exiting from coins market but pricing or missing one coin is not 😂. I believe dealers definitely make more profit than one time flippers and they hope the market is kept as hotter as possible 😊

Great video Matt, the most current "popular" releases has pretty much ended my love affair with coins and particularly $2 coloured. I live in a country vicotrian town without a coin dealer, I have bought regularly from a few different online shops which I won't mention names. At no time have I been able to get anywhere near the top of any preferred customer lists as I am a small collector, mint sets, proof sets, some pnc's and regular release purchaser of the less expensive coins. I have not been able to get any of the more recent releases at all. I go onto websites and within a minute of opening, SOLD OUT, the mint's own website is a debacle at best with these releases and th "BOTS" are the only winners out of the process they have taken. It only proves that the small, country loaction collector has NO CHANCE of getting "popular" coins and it is deflating at best and plainly uncaring about my kind of collecting. A sad state of affairs and I won't give the flippers my time or money (which appears to be the only method of getting these coins). Sad times for me

Matt, firstly I hope everything is good personally! I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed in both the mint and AusPost for how they handle new releases. They are the ones fuelling the flipper community, and yes that brings in "quick bucks" for them, but it hurts the hobby longer term, for all the reasons you outlined. I don't mind having limited releases, but if they're going to do that, I would like to see say a numbered, limited release of 3,000 of this piece, with a C mintmark, and then a general release, exactly the same, but unnumbered and no mintmark and either a very high mintage, or unlimited. That way, the people who want a Vietnam PNC because they served there for instance, can get one without stress, and at the same time, those who want the thrill of getting a really limited edition piece, can have their chance at one too. I don't mind the whole ballot idea, but I also don't know anyone who has actually got anything from them (either RAM or AusPost impressions).
@ThompsonsCoins
@ThompsonsCoins Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting Quentin! I think that's a great idea and it would be refreshing to see more unlimited mintages being brought out with the intention of allowing all collectors to participate in collecting then adding a limited edition counterpart to fill that portion of the market.

Appreciate your insights into the $2 coin market Matt, as a genuine collector I am continually frustrated on missing out on new releases, like the Vietnam coin and some PNC's due to the flippers, there also seems to be a distribution problem as my franchisee Post Office outlet, with whom I have a very good relationship with, has for the past 12 months, despite their best efforts as a regular purchaser of RAM, PM and Aussie Post products for many years, are either not having their orders filled or just receiving one item to sell, including PNC's, they are then stuck with the problem as to which one of their regular customers do they offer the item to, I think more needs to be done for genuine collectors, great to see you again in yesterday's BN live stream, always enjoy your content and friendly presentations. Cheers Peter J 😂👋🤪👍

Ive be been a coin collector since the late 1960’s. I also stack silver and gold and I also collect Hot Wheels cars. We see scalpers ( you say flippers, we say scalpers) all the time in the Hot Wheels collecting scene and they are a detested section of the scene that most collectors hate. They are like locust, raping stores for all the stock of one particular model or set then on selling them for inflated prices. One example was that Hot Wheels last year produced their first HQ Monaro car. $8 was its rrp. Within days of release it was pulling over $120 per car and people we’re advertising them by the bucket load. Whilst most collectors couldn’t find one in a shop some sellers had 10 or 20 for sale. Most collectors said to the scalpers to gagf and refused to buy them at all. That price has now dropped to $40-$50 per unit and even then it’s a hard sell. By refusing to pay what the scalpers want is a step towards stopping them as they do not want their money held up in stock they can’t sell. The recent debacle with the Vietnam coin is another travesty. EBay had them for sale days prior to release. How could they know they were going to have stock? Easy, some were dealers keeping stock aside to sell at massive profits. I witnessed one dealer selling out in seconds upon release only to have stocks available again that night with inflated prices. I called them out on it but they never responded. ( The Dealer was NOT Thompson Coins). Now I see the $2 silver coin well over $1000 and climbing. So called coin collectors are also to blame. I’ve seen them complaining about not being able to get onto the RAM website etc etc only to see them a couple of weeks later selling what they got for inflated prices and some had stocks that far exceeded the limited placed by the RAM or most coin dealers. Obviously they are getting family to make accounts. I now am one coin short now for my collection. I will not pay what scalpers are asking and now I have to evaluate if it’s worth even continuing to collect $2 coins. Another thing is money is king. Whilst I look at my collection I know I have coins worth far more than I paid for them. I know I’d feel embarrassed if I asked for a grand for a set I paid $70 for yet I know if I didn’t I would be getting ripped off and someone would buy it and on sell it for it’s going rate. I have a lot of coins like that. Unfortunately we will never eradicate these scalpers and the actual coin collectors will suffer for it but it’s the same for ever collector of every collectible you can get.

It's disappointing to hear that Hot Wheels collecting has also been impacted in that sense! I had no idea there was such high demand for them. Thanks for sharing your experience with collecting too! 😊

The only one I’m missing is the Mars set but after the absolute insanity of trying to get this years coin. I don’t know how much longer I’ll keep going with it because it’s gotten ridiculous now. It used to be much easier when the mint used to sell the bags of coins, instead of having to buy the special edition ones but now they don’t do that it’s so much harder for the rest of us who just want it for our personal collection.

Great video and very topical theme... I am a pretty new collector and yes- am interested in coloured $2 too... among other things like bullion, Perth mint, NZ and UK mint coins, and even PNCs... I really disliked seeing what happened with the most recent release - it really feels like there were limits for some (and restrictions with the online queue and mint phone lines down) - and then to see other people pop up with boxes of them to sell at inflated prices was pretty disappointing... I also saw the hype in full swing on Facebook groups with standardised lines to promote why the new coins were so sought after, and negative comments in response to anyone who had a negative comment on their behaviours... it actually felt like a cartel running it... I heard of many people who bought off eBay on the first days only to have those orders cancelled and the item relisted at a higher price... so dodgy sales practices also... But the worst thing I saw is that some people paid those inflated prices and supported the scalpers... which basically just reinforces that it is a profitable enterprise for scalpers and ensures that they will continue to hang around for future new releases... Lucky there are so many other things to collect! 😂

I had a break from collecting for about 20 years but in my retirement have found the hobby again. My, things have changed. I love the coloured coins, but there are some ridiculous prices out there. Plus, as everyone knows the newer coins are nearly impossible to get, you wait all day in the queue only to be told they are out of stock. So yes, I have become one of those flippers but only to fund my hobby, not for profit. If I find a bargain that I am really not interested in, or I manage to get two of what I was after, I will sell it on for a profit and reinvest in something I want for my collection. I think maybe one solution is to limit each customer to one-coin purchase and if there are any leftovers, open slather. I also do a bit of noodling, it's amazing what you can find in those bags or rolls of coins sometimes.

Another great video, and I agree with the pros and cons you've suggested. I would add the con that some dealers don't sell at RRP, and instead join the flippers in going straight to eBay to sell at elevated prices. While I know that's not a breach of their dealer agreement with RAM, it nonetheless contributes to genuine collectors missing out on buying new coins at RRP, and therefore harms the genuine coin collecting community. Separately, I enjoy watching your video and KZbin skills increase through experimentation. Personally I would suggest not using "stock videos". They don't add anything of value, their incongruence can take the viewer "out" of the video, and they detract from the intimacy of watching you present. Anyway, that's one person's feedback about stock videos, for whatever it's worth (surely less than a 1988 HH $2 coin, haha). Thanks for the video!

I can certainly see how dealers putting their entire allocation straight up on eBay can be massively problematic for collectors and I imagine those dealers are perhaps not as focused on modern coin collectors as some others. I appreciate the kind words and if I am completely honest with you, I film all of my videos in one take and there are times where I'll scratch my nose or something and I found that putting a video avoid disruption to the flow worked reasonably well for me 🤣 that's how it started and now from time to time I just sprinkle them in to break up the monotony of my various hand gestures. I'll certainly keep it in mind for future videos of this nature though!

After Covid-19 I tried noodling but found that banks frown upon this, and shops seem to sift all the good stuff from their registers. I know there was a person from Sydney that was selling these for over $100 each and he had sold 300 of them last time I looked at his website. Pretty disgusting, and highlights what you say about "Flippers" who are just in it to make a quick exorbitant profit at the expense of real collectors. I am currently collecting all decimal coins in the 20 cent, 50 cent, $1 and $2 ranges, trying to get two sets of each, and will ultimately pass them on to my two Sons. Thank you for your channel and the advice you give to collectors like myself. Just one quick downside I have found because of the popularity of collecting, there are probably many people like myself who get their coins from the bank to noodle. I have been getting a fair amount of grief from some of the bank staff, because they say the ATM coin dispensers are for "Store Owners" to get change, not for collectors who want to noodle. What are you thoughts about this? Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm very glad your coin arrived safe and sound 😊 As for the banks, there are several individuals who take advantage of the change dispensers and as a result my understanding is that there have been instances where businesses have been unable to get change from them after collectors have cleared them out. I'm not sure what the solution is to that dilemma though unfortunately!

I have a feeling that this whole $2 is going to fall apart soon. Certainly the circulated market will once people with piles of colour realize that dealers aren’t interested in them unless they are UNC, graded or errors. I have seen people on Facebook groups trying to offload individual coins without success. Offers only just above face value. Still stupid prices on eBay catching out collectors who are new to the game.
@ThompsonsCoins

Thanks for watching Mike! I think the circulating $2 coin market is largely made up of Noodlers and casual collectors who may not want to spend large amounts on their hobby. You're absolutely right in that most dealers aren't interested in buying up circulated coloured coins because they are so easy to access.

@@ThompsonsCoins An eBay search on sold prices for the 88/89 HH $2 tells the story. At some point it is all going to implode. A completely unremarkable coin selling for $7, $200 and even $4000. I’ll stick to my 50c.

I have started coin collecting last 12 months. My daughter got me hooked. But I do consider myself a value hunter/flipper. I will sell a coin I believe is overpriced. But if the price drops etc. I like the coins enough to keep & store. I have even started using my SMSF to purchase coins & store them at Imperial etc. I find 50c sets & $1 sets so much easier to complete that that has become more of my noodling time. I have seen kids U25's buy 20-30 poppies & Vietnam coins through huge numbers of accounts with slightly different addresses and multiple burner phones. But the worst I saw was a distributor putting up the soldout sign onsite and their eBay page selling coins. That is far worse than any flipper!

Hey mate! Great video👍. Ive been collecting coins since 2012...great time to get in....I was buying red poppy and coronation rolls for $300...and have continued with alot of other coins....but for the last few years I havent collected to many purely because I dont like prices...and also the mintage is to high. I think if the mint were to release a coloured Charles $2 coin with a low mintage like the poppy and coronation....I would be in...but then again what would the first day on ebay...be like...for that coin? $2k? So I would probably still be out😢😂😢😂 I did buy some of the 2021 MOR bags and rolls....but thats backfired....prices have plumetted on those to😂😢😂😢. Do you know the reason for this decline? I only buy the gold quarter ounces and coins now....and silver bullion at least they are a fair price and will always go up. Again great video my man😁👍

Good vid Matt flippers wreck everything. I got lucky real lucky with the poppy this year and also got the Vietnam silver they are in the long term stack. I host a buying group for a bunch of pensioners who are not tech savvy so I always try to get a few but pass them on to the group at cost. Flippers wreck it they over inflate prices and suck up supply. I'm into the 50c coins now and collectable bullion. Enjoy fatherhood mate its awesome and just keeps getting better.

The thing that gets me about the $2 is that the colour is literally just there for the sake of it. It adds nothing to the overall design and the themes are usually much more gimmicky (eg. Wiggles) than those used for other denominations. The red poppy, eternal flame and Vietnam coins are of course the exceptions which prove the rule.
@ThompsonsCoins
@ThompsonsCoins Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Riley. I think you're right and as a result, many of those $2 coins don't seem to be nearly as popular with collectors. But I think the partnership with Woolies is probably intended to put those coins in the hands of a younger generation of future collectors so hopefully it has a positive impact in years to come 🙂

I mainly get my coloured and other $2 coins I find in my change, I sometimes buy some from the local coin shop or e-bay if there is one I want to have and have not found yet. I think they should keep the mintage down and limit the amount to three per customer on line and send out a dozen or two to AUSPOST branches and the established coin shops and on line dealers. Keep'm rare and keep'm fair. Flippers can still have a go by getting friends and family to buy a few for them but this way would not deprive true collectors of their passion. $2 coins mintage needs to remain low for they are mainly sort after by Australians in Australia, it's not like with the silver bullion Kookaburas with their 500,000 mintage for they are of a truly global market.
@ThompsonsCoins

Rare and fair is a great expression! I think you're right in that limits are one of the key elements of avoiding large amounts of hot coins ending up with individuals rather than in the hands of collectors in the first instance. You also raise a fair point in that there's actually nothing wrong with flippers, it's just concerning when they are ending up with significantly larger quantities than most dealers. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Now that limits are made and so many long time collectors missing out on new releases, I have lost interest and now only collect the coins going into circulation to keep my run going from 1910 . I will only buy another type of coin if it interests me for its particular design.

I’ll stick to the coins the RAM actually admit to minting on their website.
