As someone who read every quest and flavor text and did almost 100% of the quests in Azeroth, and same in Outland, I can say that Pyromancer was right. Blizzard has absolutely no idea what the hell they are doing with the story. The azeroth stories were kind of rich, an easy 7/10 story wise, with things like Arthas and the fall of Lordaeron which then became Undercity, or the legendary paladin Tirion Fordring's expulsion from the Alliance and faked death and his fatherless son then being seduced by the Scarlet Crusade and slowly rising in ranks to becoming their Highlord, which then leads to his vengeance against the crusade when he realizes that his father is still alive, and finally sees how his anger had twisted him into becoming a zealot in that vile cult, or Duskwood being corrupted when miners find the legendary Scythe of Elune which draws darkness to the forest, and the death of Sven's wife when she tried to mislead the 4 horsemen who came looking for the scythe, or the fact that Jitters in the graveyard is crazy because he witnessed all of that, and literal hundreds of other stories of this caliber. It was very good. Then, came Outland, and the stories are non-existent and extremely shallow and formulaic and full of plot holes. Illidan is a total idiot who sends his very secret plans which literally say "our success depends on the enemy not finding out about these plans" on a piece of paper (that we intercept in Ramparts) instead of meeting his commander face to face. The horde and alliance form a pact against the Burning Legion because "we are outnumbered and must fight together against the demons or we both die", yet both factions get petty quests FROM THE SAME NPC CAMPS to "kill the other faction members, and take over the towers in Hellfire and Auchindoun" (great logic there, Blizz), or the Consortium Ethereals in Netherstorm who have broken free from the Ethereum faction due to "ethereum being too blinded by vengeance and hatred", yet the Consortium have been "hunting Dimensius the void lord for 1000 years to get revenge on him" (lol Blizz, same thing), and when they finally find Dimensius feeding on a manaforge in Netherstorm, after a 1000 year hunt, they send in YOU and... ONE of their own guys. When you actually beat this Dimensius fella, you are told "millions of Ethereals thank you" (ok Blizz, so why didn't they send millions of Ethereals on such an important mission, that they have spent 1000 years hunting down?! You send in 1 guy and hope for the best, and risk Dimensius escaping for another 1000 year hunt...). But most of the Outlands lore is actually not even this bad, instead most of the lore is simply non-existent with barely any explanations of NPCs beyond "pls kill 3 bats in my backyard". The Outlands lore is dogshit, and at most worth a score of 1-2/10. It is clear they used up all good ideas in Azeroth. Perhaps they realized that nobody reads their quests so they stopped giving a shit after Vanilla. Pyromancer, who I mentioned before, had an epic rant after reading every book and every quest and vm every cinematic and every flavor text and every NPC RP dialog and every movie and trying to piece together the story and his conclusion was that there is no story, it is all a bunch of inconsistent ramblings from people who have no idea how to tell a story even if you outline the whole story for them. Blizzard have been incompetent since Outland.

They just used familiar names to throw at the player to kill. It's a cool expansion for many reasons, but story aint it. On the flipside, they did fix many issues with TBC story in Legion. So good on them for that.

Yeah. I'll admit I haven't played WoW since my childhood but it's sad to see what's become of the very first MMO I've played. FFXIV surprisingly enough filled that void I've had for a long time. Despite my disdain for Blizzard, I genuinely do want to see WoW return to its former glory but it seems the only possible way to do it is to give it the FFXIV 1.0 treatment (to those wondering, it basically means resetting the game but making it's shutdown canon. In the case of A Realm Reborn, the original world was destroyed by the Ascians in I think what became known as the Seventh Umbral Calamity)

The real problem is almost never that one guy but the entirety of the staff and the culture in the office. If you hire nothing but dispassionate opportunists that talk a big game then your product will be equally dispassionate and devoid of all substance. It's a phenomenon of the current era, you have people with degree's coming into their respective fields feeling they are better than the rest. Then there are those without the degree's or certifications that have the passion but lack the resources or the ability to obtain these arbitrary requirements. There is a concept in the business world of "Lean" mechanisms, however a large portion of the business world miss the point of what "Lean" us supposed to accomplish. It is to eliminate bloat and inefficiency and promote transparency to issues before they become major show stoppers. Instead what seems to happen is management creates 100 metrics to track without regard to the form and purpose of the systems they are setting in place. In other words Creativity and Ingenuity are not traits that can be "managed" they need to be "fostered", you can't rush the creative process.

Warning: Long rant by old man that reflects on the past: That whole delivery on the scene from 1:20 to 1:34 is perfectly executed. Even the bass boosted bgm carries a sense of perversion. A game which has become a charicature of an MMORPG that isn't filled with humans playing their characters, but bots playing NPCs. Finality. It culminates with the player leaving the world as he comes to terms with the reality of a game that was meant to be a momentary escape from actual reality. Whilst I myself didn't leave for this reason, when I quit in 2011 when Firelands came out, I also felt that painful realization. Thinking to myself: "My old guild that I was in for years is gone. The GMs took away my name that I had for five years because suddenly it violates some kind of policy (my Paladin was called 'Wrynn' because I read it in the original classic wow player handbook that came with the game and thought it sounds neat). @@darokdeed Dragon Soul loot went wrong withUltraxxion, couldn't interact with loot and/or missing loot. GM appeared in around 5 to 10 minutes and even entertained us for 5 minutes (raid break) then on behest of our gnome players the GM turned us all into gnomes. Last time I saw one ingame.

Just happened to me the other day, rare recipe dropped in a TBC dungeon run I needed for leveling profession, loot was bugged and plans weren't lootable for anybody. Ticket about it was only answered 2 days later, with the idiotic copy-paste BS "what you can do to avoid this next time" (of course non of it applied as it was a bug....) and they said they couldn't restore the item to me. Tried to follow up with them twice to make them understand but they simply don't even play the game any more. 15 years ago a GM would have simply popped into the dungeon while we were still there and fixed it on the spot. If I didn't have a good guild with friends I'd have stopped to play as soon as they announced the boost...

I remember a time when, during vanilla leveling, I put in a ticket in Duskwood about the giant cage the Hermit had, and the GM was playful, coy, but also helpful. One of my friends even made a nonsensical ticket in TBC, got transported to isle of quel'danas and attacked by an army of chickens. Now you've got GMs who'll tell you to suck it if your master looter disconnects during a pull and the loot will die with the boss. When private servers does your job better than on the official release you know you don' goofed. Be it Warmane, Atlantis or Sunwell private servers, I've never seen worse customer service than current Blizzard. A bunch of basement-dwelling nerds making a private server for fun can run the game better, and it's fuggen sad. Screw firing the Diablo 4 director and the apology-mouthpiece that is/was J Allen Brack, FIRE BOBBY KOTICK.

I feel that really gloomy feeling as well. When I go on I get depressed, so I don't play anymore. The community is gone and the lore has been corrupted and destroyed. The best solution would be to scrap everything, and restart at BC or Wrath. And just say that the lore since then was a dream and Yogg Saron killed everyone. It needs to be redone, but no one will agree to it. Blizzard has been corporatized and filled with diversity hires who all want to contribute to the story. And it's lost all its luster and strength. Great games/lore/stories are made by small dedicated organic teams.

In FF XIV, you pay a subscription in order to play in a virtual world, and have fun. In WoW, you pay a subscription in order to get a virtual JOB, where you can actively work towards maybe having some fun, if RNG wills it. I quit in Shadowlands, never going to come back again, FF XIV respects my time, WoW shoves shit down my throat for paying it. It's clear which of the two deserves my money. The time of WoW has passed. The time to explore new worlds has begun. Let's face it.. the majority of fun and excitement that came from WoW was when you were new to the game, everything was a mystery and everything was exciting and unexplored. You made a Night Elf and didn't have a clue what Stormwind was, but it felt like an exciting city far away that you needed to level up and get stronger in order to reach. It was a fun, dangerous journey just to get there. I could write a novel.. but the point is, I've now spent probably hundreds of hours sitting in Stormwind. What is the point in continually re-doing the same thing, especially when the makes of the game are changing it so much it's not longer what it used to be. The game has passed it's time, and it's time to move on.. I will however always fondly remember all the amazing times I had in the World of Warcraft.

Meshes closely with my theory that the only thing that made vanilla fun or challenging in any way were all things that made it an actually awful game by peoples standards today. When members of your guild have to go and attack a 0 armor monster in the blasted lands for hours on end to form the initial math calculations for elitist jerks, because Blizzard certainly isn't going to tell you how stats work or what they do or what multipliers abilities have and how stats effect them. Similarly nobody knew dick about how the boss mechanics worked for the longest time. Blizzard threatened bans for the original threat meters. The same thing in reverse, holy shit the PVP system in Vanilla, the thing that made it fun is what would make people call it terrible as modern design. The weapons were released before BWL came out, but were better/side grades to Naxxramas weapons. The top guilds for pve in original vanilla were the top pvp guilds end of story because having a raid full of rank14 weapons was how you cleared content. So you pvp'd forever and got into an exclusive gear club where you're actually an unkillable god comparably to 99% of the player base, that was objectively fun for the player doing it but frustrating for most of the people paying subs. I think it was worth their frustration though. I'll remember Unbreakables pvp video long after my brain is ravaged by dementia, those frustrations gave people things to strive for in the game that were traditional sense of the word, awe some.

I was actually having a bit of fun in classic, but like a lot of people I'm not logging in and boycotting Blizzard in support of the lawsuit and call for serious changes to be made. As much as I love playing a druid, Blizzard needs to get its enormous ass in gear before they get any more subscription money out of me.
