The current Status of the Accessibility of the Atlanta Marriot Marquis Elevators as of July 2024

(July 2024) I have heard rumors of these being smart key carded and I can confirm that this is true however all the floors are not locked. In the high rise elevators you can ride up to 42. on the low rise (1-17) Totally keyed off except for 10. on the high high rise (31-41) the car panel was totally unlocked. Lastly on the mid high rise (18-30) They are completely key carded off with the exception of 10. They are SMART keycarded so if you stay in the hotel, your key will only unlock your floor. Also if you do go in here just to see the elevators, this is what is open as of July 2024.
These are iconic elevators and it is shame that they are being locked off however I can understand the owner's point of view. If you do go in here to ride the elevators, please make sure to be respectful as this hotel has for the most part been cool with elevator enthusiasts coming to check out the elevators and the most iconic (high rise) elevators can still be enjoyed up to the 42nd floor.

For these elevators, 5 stories isn’t THAT big of a deal. If I go through Atlanta again, I’ll go back and film these. It is sad that our world has gotten so dangerous and it’s ruined it for good hearted people like us who just want to enjoy our hobby of filming elevators. I am having serious thoughts about retiring from elevator filming after this year for those reasons😢

At least with the keycard readers in this hotel, 42 is open. Although I bet the Hilton will follow suit very soon. When I went to Atlanta last year I was all excited to see the four famous hotels and explore Atlanta, as well as see other famous elevators musicfreakcc filmed. I was let down really bad and I was pretty disappointed with the city. The crime is really bad, security at Lenox Square & Phipps Plaza is overwhelming, most buildings are turnstiled off, the traffic is horrible, and not to mention someone on the Marta judged me for the sweatshirt I was wearing because it wasn't local. I was also harassed by two very rude security guards for filming the elevator in a parking garage down here. Unless it's something not elevator related, I have no intentions on ever coming back to Atlanta.

Downtown Atlanta has really gone downhill in the last few years. Covid hit the city a lot harder than others near it and it still hasn’t really recovered outside of Midtown. Unrelated, but there is a converted 1931 Freight Elevator at the Ponce City Market that goes to the rooftop park I went on when I last visited that is really really cool though.

I loved the city overall and saw lots of cool elevators in the Apartment Buildings, but Hotels were difficult-impossible to film in. I got harassed pretty brutally in one (not going into too much detail at this time) and several others I went in had guards blocking the elevators asking for room keys

Too bad another notable elevator system has been keycarded. I could personally understand why they would want to lock these off since Atlanta from what I've heard has become sketchy. Smart keying them though is a bad idea. My Airbnb in Toronto's elevators were all smart keyed and the residents were annoyed because it is more convenient for them just to tap one key for access than pitching your own key to access only your floor, especially for the people that have to carry lots of stuff. I could understand smart keying a secure office building if it's equipped with destination dispatch and the equipment mounted on the turnstiles, but not a hotel or apartment building.

Ill never forget going here one spring break around 2012-2013 and riding up to 47 to find an entire movie crew set up across the entire floor i cant remeber the name of the film (maybe the hunger games sequal or flight?) but i remeber meeting several of the cast members and production assistants they were very nice to me and my dad it was so random ill never forget it 😅 its honestly suprising these elevators were open this long i thought for sure when they modded them it was getting locked but even today the system still isnt fully working sometimes i think its just the sheer size of the place theres just to many key cards for the computer to keep track of but as time goes by im sure someone will figure it out and you'll have to pay to get up there like the westin

This could have been a lot worse. Though the fact that keycard readers are needed now does show concern for the City of Atlanta since it seems crime is on the rise there. At least you can get a good video that high rise elevators. If the security presence continues to grow, probably a good idea to only do two rides for a video and stop from there (you're fine. And this is just a recommendation to the community) in case security presence continues to get bigger. In the end, they just want their registered guests to be safe, but it's nice to see that you can still ride these. Though I am concerned about Atlanta if crime is rising. New York City has gotten quite awful lately too which is my nearest big city.

Atlanta isn't as safe a place as it used to be. Many hotels all over have done this to their elevators for safety reasons. They want to make sure only those who have a legitimate reason to be there only can access guest floors.

At the Hilton Atlanta, floors 26-28 are locked off 24/7, you’ll need a special key card to access these floors. I think the rest of the floors are locked during night hours.

It is absurd to have floor sensitive key-card readers. I think this maybe the first Marriott ever that is doing that. That completely ruins the experience even if I were staying there. Imagine staying on 1-9 and still not being able to ride to 17,30,47.

@@gluse That is a great idea. I do have to give the MM Atlanta credit for holding off activating the key-card readers for over a year after they were first installed. It seems like activating them were a last resort.

I wouldn't smart keycard the elevators in case elevators get crowded because smart key card readers would cause a lot of problems for hotel guests. With regular key card readers, we can allow time for other guests to quickly press their floor. With smart key readers, guests will be forced to wait extra. That's why I prefer regular key cards over smart ones because regular keycards unlock all the floors while smart ones unlock your floor only and nowhere else.

The Millennium Hilton in NYC are modernizing the old Otis Luxury Series 3 elevators right now. That also means they’ll be smart keyed too. And they’ll do the same thing to the Schindler PORTs at the NYC Marriott Marquis too. More New York hotel elevators are getting smart keyed off.

This seems to be the new norm for city hotels to be smart keying their elevators. It is what it is and me personally I feel uncomfortable going inside hotels unless I am staying in the place or attending any kind of event. I think the Westin Boston Copley smart keyed their elevators recently as well...

The Atlantic City hotel elevators will also get smart keyed too. And ones in Kentucky (Louisville, Covington, Newport & Lexington) and Ohio (Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton & Cleveland). They might do the same thing in Colorado (Denver and Colorado Springs) too.

The 25 floor Waterfront Plaza Office Towers in downtown Louisville, KY key carded their TKE Agile destination dispatch elevators except for the second floor. The center tower ones are key card free, but they only go up 17 floors and are still Dover Impulses, but they’re scenic still.

I can totally understand why they had to SMART Key these elevators. Apparently Atlanta isn’t as a good city as it was before with all what’s happening in that city today. I’m honestly glad that I was able to take a trip down there last summer and see these elevators while they were still open and also having to stay there for 1 night on the 30th floor and Ngl these elevators were like a playground and it was honestly a dream come true to come to Atlanta and ride the famous elevators that started it all. But now I’m started to lose a bit of interest on these elevators and in Atlanta after all of this happened. And possibly at some point in the near future, the Hilton next door could be next to keycard their elevators. At least Marriott is generous enough to keep the 42nd floor unlocked for anyone wanting to ride the amazing high rise elevators for fun. Honestly, I feel like it would’ve been better if 47 was the only floor unlocked and not 42 or maybe could’ve been both 42 and 47, but hey, can’t complain about it, it’s still a good ride
