We had a similar curse in Poland. When the tomb of Casimir IV Jagiellon (a king of Poland) was opened, people died. The news of a curse spread far and wide. The culprit turned out to be Aspergillus flavus, a nasty type of fungus.

I read in high school that Shakespeare placed an actual curse upon anyone who would disturb his remains. For Reals. And being Shakespeare he naturally did it as a rhyming couplet. If I recall correctly, the curse reads as follows "Blessed be the man who spares these stones. And cursed be he who moves my bones." The teacher said that re-using graves was common at that time and Shakespeare simply didn't want it to happen to him.

I’ve seen many documentaries speculating how violent Tut’s death could be judging by the state of his remains, but recently one KZbin channel commented that it was actually Carter’s team that hacked at the poor mummy in the process of excavation/examination. I’d be pretty pissed at such indignity too.

@@cotati76 Thank you for the kind words. Staph infections are no joke. They can be devastating! I'm glad you recovered, too. Unfortunately, after the sepsis, I've been experiencing all kinds of cognitive problems. I have to hit rewind on videos because I can't remember what they were _just_ talking about.) The doc said it'd clear up after a year, but it's been 17 months and I've barely had any improvement. However, I really shouldn't complain. *I'm alive!* I experienced the best possible outcome. So... YAY! (However, once you've had sepsis, it's very easy to get it again. Minor tangential correction: 'elective' in a medical context has to do with urgency, not how necessary a surgery is. My granddad was next door to the cardiac ICU's nurses' station and had been resuscitated twice before he got a stent put in, but it was still an elective procedure.

Not gonna lie, I was really skeptical about this episode being any good. But once again, Katie came through. And the Curse you are skeptical of has found you! The least deadly, but most annoying of all curses: The Curse of the Petty Spelling Bee Champion... You spelled "thoroughly" wrong. "throughly" is incorrect. Sit down. You have been eliminated. You will not die from this error, but the humiliation will have you forever seeking death, as a possible relief. Don't do it. It won't help. Endure your miserable existence until death --- by natural or accidental causes, unaffected by your own hand or desires --- catches you unaware. Then, and only then, will the curse cease to exist. It will then, and only then, abandon its attachment to your soul. Even your memories of the humiliation will evaporate, granting the peace you've sought in vane... But! Do not seek a loophole! Each attempt, even considering the possibility, will increase the burden of the humiliation... You have been informed and warned. You cannot plea ignorance! You are Doomed! Acceptance is the easiest path. Also; Consider that Doomed is nowhere near as horrendous as Damned... So, Enjoy... Have a nice day! 😊 😮

My great-grandad worked as a chauffeur at Highclere Castle (the exterior of which is used for Downton Abbey) back in the 1920s. The family story goes that in the 1920s, shortly after the death of Lord Carnavon, he was ordered late at night to take a heavy sack and throw it in a nearby lake (possibly Milford Lake). He would tell my grandfather that the family believed in the curse and he thought the bag contained items taken from the tomb that Lady Carnavon wanted removed from the castle.

I don’t remember it being crowded so I love the fact when they did a temporary exhibit the seventies, it was so popular that people waited overnight to get in and spurred this local obsession with Egyptology. That story was actually the inspiration for Steve Martin’s King Tut song, New Yorkers are crazy man

Heres my thing with the British Museum and friends: just make some replicas and give it back. I saw the traveling King Tut exhibit that Egypt created a few years back when it came to Portland, OR. An extremely well trained expert with access to specialized tools could tell the difference, but the average person absolutely cannot. Technology is pretty great these days, so it's not like it's especially hard to make a replica as flawless as we're willing to spend for.
@annak8755
@annak8755 Жыл бұрын
Personally, I'd also like it if they made videos of all the stuff that is not exhibited (in the museum and outside it) and how it relates to the time. Maybe ask the history channel to stop with the ghost and alien hunts for a few years and recreate some of the rituals that the artifacts would have been used in. It's a pity that visiting one museum just gives you a piece of a puzzle that you have no idea where to place. I've seen mummified people and animals, statues and trinkets in museums that are so removed from their context, it's hard to place them in time. I would have liked to know the age when they were used as well as what was used before said object and afterward. You can say I like to see how things evolved, to see a video of a seed in the ground, of the plant budding, growing and withering rather than to see a seed behind a glass in a white room.
@BruceBoyde
@BruceBoyde Жыл бұрын
@@annak8755 yeah, that would be an excellent addition as well. Beyond the basically just theft, the removal from context really limits the potential for understanding the scattered artifacts.

Good luck with that. The number of people who just care about seeing something because it's famous is insane. It's what's kept the Mona Lisa so popular, It was the number one thing I heard from people when I went to see the dead sea scrolls in Denver, it's why a bunch of people go on safari in Africa but never go see their ancient ruins. The masses are idiots who just go "I've heard of that and I want to see the real deal!" You give those schmucks a story about how you have fake, but good fake, versions of the real deal and nobody will go see them except the small handful that has actual interest in the subject

@@Lunch_Meat eh, maybe. Tons of people saw that Tut exhibition as it traveled the U.S. It was certainly quite busy when I went, to the point that your ticket had a specific time window to see it all. @@BruceBoyde I hope you're right, I really do, cause I support your proposal. I'm at 8:14 so maybe Katy writes about this later, but the joke here is that Egyptian tombs, the royal ones with all the gold in them especially, were looted literally all the time. Tutankhamen's tomb was actually a pretty small specimen and there's reason to believe it wasn't an especially rich burial as such things go. The remarkable thing about it is that it was intact, rather than having been looted within a few years of his burial. Sure, pharaohs kept the locations of their tombs as secret as they could -- that's why they were buried in caves dug into the Valley of the Kings rather than flashy monuments like the Old Kingdom pyramids -- but the workers knew. And it was probably the workers who came back later to loot the things. It that the entrance to Tutankhamen's tomb had been covered up not long afterward by the detritus from excavating a different tomb, so that even the dudes who made it couldn't find it again. And that's why we have this singular example of an intact royal Egyptian burial of an otherwise unremarkable and obscure pharaoh that history had practically forgotten. But that's why the curses, in the hopes of magically forestalling grave robbers. (They were not of course literate, so they wouldn't have been able to read the curses for themselves.) Of course, the very people who carved them into the walls of the tomb didn't take them any more seriously than Simon did, and practically every other tomb was emptied of anything shiny in short order.
@RIlianP
@RIlianP Жыл бұрын
While Tutankhamen's tomb was indeed remarkably well preserved, it was indeed looted twice within several years of the pharaohs burial, but both robberies were detected and some of the stolen items were replaced and the tomb repaired. Later due to the natural flooding of the Valley of the Kings the entrance was covered by natural layer of alluvium which concealed it and the tomb of Horemheb later was built on top of it, later more rubbish from different other constructions was duped on to of it and concealed it further.

33:41 honestly, you'd be shocked at how certain infections can go bad. My husband's cousin had a minor UTI turn into Sepsis. I once let a UTI turn into a kidney infection because usually a UTI clears up on its own. A high dose of Vitamin C can often clear up a minor infection. At your age, Simon (the same age as my husband), you've probably had a few minor infections that you had treated as a kid/teen/young adult etc that you don't even think hard about that could have caused major issues or your body would have done its thing. But you don't necessarily know if you'd have survived. Standard practice these days has us doing a lot of good stuff to prevent infections from ever getting to a point to that we need oral antibiotics. Think about how often you've gotten a cut and put an antibiotic cream or gel on it and you also washed it with soap and water and put a sterile bandage on it. In the past it wasn't uncommon to just wrap cuts without washing them. It wasn't uncommon for people to believe that washing cuts would actually make them less likely to heal properly. It also wasn't uncommon for people to go long periods of time without proper vitamins like Vitamin C which slow wound healing. How many times as a child dud you have a bad cough with yellow mucus that you got an antibiotic for that people in the past may have seen turn into Pneumonia because they didn't treat all their little infections and issues so they all had worse immune systems. It's not even always that we have modern medicine. It's a combination of things. We also have the knowledge that doing the right stuff from the start to prevent something from getting worse is better for us and we have better immune systems to fight off bigger infections. If your kid has a nasty cold, which is very likely because kids are germ factories, it's going to be a lot harder to prevent catching that cold when your body is fighting off the chronic infections it has from improperly cleaning your shaving cuts and then that common cold that is modern people don't even bother getting antibiotics for as adults because our immune systems have learned to handle them turn into Pneumonia and then the people in the past die all because they couldn't be arsed to wash their hands before they touched their face after they cut it while shaving

It’s the facts that prove to be so much more interesting than the facts that are glamorously described. I can think of one big KZbin channel that is very successful with no fact checking done….Simon you are solid!

8:25 I loled cuz I was like it is kinda rich to see a British man talking about treasure hunting as perfectly fine. Then Simon commented about the British museum. I am not commenting on the legitimacy of treasure hunting and archeology, I am just saying that it is a funny lens I saw it in for a second and was immediately addressed in the video.

Remember going to the museum to see the King Tut exhibit. Must have been all of 11 or 12 years old, but the death mask is still a vivid memory. That thing rules. He might have been an inbred, club-footed freak, but his pimping game was on point!

Allergic pneumonitis/allergic alveolitis (the respiratory reaction to mold and ancient dust) has an acute and a sub-acute form. The acute form will look like a pneumonia and can kill within days to weeks, but the subacute form can lie in wait for years whilst slowly damaging the lungtissue. You can't discount the deaths from 5-years after the excavation based off timing alone, as it's very possible that some of them passed from the subacute lungdamage following mold-exposure.

Simon, you are incredibly lucky! I have had sepsis, and many, many nasty chest and kidney infections that would have developed in to sepsis and killed me without antibiotics. Also many smaller things like a wisdom tooth that grew into my cheek muscle, and ear infections that could have caused hearing issues if not a serious problem. Not to mention life changing surgeries! Modern medicine is incredible!

@@IanAlcorn Thank you. Recently people have been saying the vulture was added to the crown recently and King Tut is another “victim of the Mandela Effect”. I just wanted to know if someone who has seen it a long time ago can confirm the two animals being present on the crown to disprove the new theory.

I just got 16 ads in 18 minutes my god if it weren't for Simon and Markiplier I'd outright uninstall KZbin even if I had to jailbreak my phone to do it. I'm fed up with everything aggressively advertising stuff to me, and especially fed up with video games doing it. P.S. 8 of these 16 ads were unskippable, and had absolutely nothing to do with my watch history or preferred videos so the algorithm is absolutely a Myth that needs decoding. That aside only one of these 16 were Simons, and those that were able to be skipped were three minute ads. KZbin used to be good it sucks now.

There's a thing known as psychogenic death, where you essentially think yourself to death, so that might be a factor here. Kind of like 'dying from a broken heart' where a surviving spouse of an elderly couple just gives up & they die soon after. Roanoke did a video on his channel recently, covering 'the silent twins' & how they agreed that one of them had to go in order for the other to live a normal life. The one who died was said to have willed it into happening. There's been some research into it & some of it seems plausible.
