Just for clarification- George IV was Prince Regent for many years because his father, King George III famously went completely insane (possibly due to congenital Porphyria); making it necessary for him to step in as Regent as the sitting King was mad as a mongoose. Also known from the third series of Blackadder - with Hugh Laurie playing the Prince Regent - it was utterly fantastic!

Since the Smithsonian acquired the gemstone, the "curse appears to have gone dormant." Owning the diamond has brought "nothing but good luck" for the nonprofit national museum, according to a Smithsonian curator, and has helped it build a "world-class gem collection" with rising attendance levels.

It's a great story that's surprisingly believable, but ultimately harmless - perfect for this channel Edit: to anyone that says he already made a video on this, I just watched it and it was only about the coincidences surrounding the titanic. Marie Antoinette actually was involved in a scandal with a diamond necklace, it just wasn’t the Hope Diamond. Louis XV had commissioned a (really gaudy) diamond necklace for his mistress but he died before they finished the thing and the jewelers were stuck with it. Desperate to recoup their losses they tried to sell it to Marie Antoinette but she repeatedly turned it down. Later on a nobleman named Cardinal de Rohan was looking for a way to get back in the Queen’s good graces and his mistress, Jeanne de la Motte, convinced him that she was pals with her and after conducting a forged correspondence and even hiring a double to impersonate the Queen told him that Marie Antoinette really wanted this massively expensive necklace but didn’t want to be seen making the purchase so wouldn’t he pretty please buy it and she’d pay him back later? The Cardinal went ahead and arranged the purchase and made the first payment to the jewelers, handing the box of bling over to who he thought was the Queen’s courier but instead the guy actually worked for Jeanne who had the necklace broken down and sold off the pieces. Of course in the end the con fell apart when the Cardinal tried to ask the real Queen for his reward and she had no idea what he was talking about. It became known as ‘the affair of the Queen’s necklace’ and it would be funny except that it basically destroyed her reputation. Despite the fact that the con-woman and her accomplices were caught and convicted the general public refused to believe that Marie Antoinette hadn’t somehow been trying to get the necklace for herself and no matter how much she protested that she’d never wanted the darn thing since nobody else had it either the warped version of events stuck. You know, like a conspiracy theory.

My sister and my mum saw the Hope diamond in the Smithsonian it’s in a room full of fantastic (and very 80’s) jewellery: emeralds the size of grapes, blood red rubies and diamonds of every colour. Unsurprisingly the jewellery section is very popular. Apparently if you donate jewellery to the Smithsonian you get a tax break so the donations have as much to do with saving some dosh as philanthropy. The Smithsonian is a wonderfully weird museum.
@philbert006

You can donate anything to pretty much any organization for tax breaks. Wealthy people "donate" stuff like that, sources of aggravation or unnecessary attention, and the problem goes away along with them more than making up for the monetary value in tax deferrals and people praising their philanthropy.

My understanding of the "Curse" is that it was exactly what was outlined here. Anyone who owned the diamond was rich upon purchasing and poor upon selling it. This is probably a product of what it is (something of immense monetary and near enough zero practical value) rather than anything supernatural, but it did lead to financial ruin for Louis XIV, the Hopes and the McLeans.

Way back when I studied Geology at university, I learned that because diamonds are only stable at a certain temp/pressure and the rest of the time carbon turns into graphite. This includes when a diamond is caught in the crust and doesn't get high enough to stop itself turning in to graphite, while the reverse is also true if graphite gets super low in the continental crust. Anyway, the thing is that in order for diamonds to arrive at the surface via kimberlite pipes they have to be moving FAST. By my back of the envelope calculations from then, we're talking speed of sound levels of fast. Semi-molten rock, shooting up into the crust at the speed of fucking sound.

Spinel is hard to explain to someone that doesn't understand gemstones and minerals. Spinel is its own mineral, unlike ruby's and sapphires which are the same mineral (corundum) just with different inclusions... This means you can different types of Spinel like you have different types of Corundum... Red Spinel is called Balas-Spinel (sometimes called Ruby Spinel and most confusing Balas-Ruby) but its more clear than Corundum...

*CAN* be more translucent than corundum, and often is, buy that's not a guarantee. Spinel is an underrated mineral, though, and I think that's what you are trying to convey. I think its so sad that they took the stone apart and made it into smaller pieces, big raw stones can be so incredibly beautiful and special, esp if its something that is quite rare, like the blue colour of the diamond, always makes me sad when people destroy naturally beautiful things for no good reason. I do love polished stones too, but raw ones really have something special. I have quite a few crystals and precious stones and worked at a shop that sold them, we also had raw diamond necklaces and I think one or 2 rings and they were pretty and something different to all the polished ones we had of other stones.

While there is no problem (in my opinion) with having a monetary reward on occasion, I think it is an unhealthy thing to do overall. It is just for the reason you mentioned; the connection to work in the future. Too many people end up having a very unhealthy relationship with their jobs (leading to psychological disorders and, depending on the country, a tendency to ignore your physical health and prioritize work. Of course this is way more extreme in the US where you can lose your job for trying to call off sick). At first it becomes a way to make some money, and a lot of us are encouraged, or pushed, to go get job. It can be under the guise of independence, a necessity to buy some things for yourself, or to support your family, depending on your financial situation. Allowing your children to have some form of allowance, birthday money, money for small chores they are not forced to do but can choose to do (you do not want a child to overwork themselves for money) can be good to teach them money management. But creating small moments where you control their behavior with money prepares them for potential abuse in the workplace, an unhealthy work/life balance, a fear of saying no because they are being paid to be good workers, ect. You seem to have had a decent amount of luck in your past with jobs. But the majority of people are not that fortunate.

Going back through and rewatching all the DTU videos Simon’s comment about “well maybe you are all here for stories about my kids” rings extra extra true. I am finding it difficult to work my way through any of the other channels backlogs besides casual criminalist because I have become so used to his personal opinions and extra commentary that everything else feels too clinical. I want the tangents god damn it! Can we get a channel where Simon watches and reacts to his own videos with commentary? I’d watch that all day every day 😂

As someone who suffers from an excutive functioning disorder themselves, it absolutely matters if people have the ability for internal motivation or not. (I also have a background in early childhood education, child development, and SPED with a CI focus.) Working a job is a contract between you and your employer. X amount of work for X amount of money. One doesn't only work at their job though. One has to be able to function on their own in their life outside of work when there are no external rewards. When One lacks the ability for internal rewards or were never taught that internal rewards are more valuable, One then needs supports to implement other tools and strategies to be able to function and be successful. *It's easier to teach a child than it is to fix a broken adult.* P.s. this is not a comment on your parenting Simon. Just a why internal motivation is important.

Things like this appear cursed because they have so many owners who’s lives can be scrutinised. I mean most things have one or two owners and then end up in a landfill somewhere. Another good example is buildings, because they’re around long enough for lots of people’s lives to be connected to them.

I am a listener of the Decoding the Unknown podcast and wanted to notify you about issues with the audio mixing. It's very common on this channel for the background audio to be louder than Simon's voice. It makes the podcast very difficult to listen to. It's not every episode, but enough to be annoying. This episode is a perfect example around the 3:04 mark.
