The sports curses in America are present in every sport. With the curse of the billy goat, the curse of the bambino, the curse of Billy Penn, the Based God curse, madden curse, and many others, these have become scapegoats for tortured fans. These fandoms include the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Lions, Cleveland, Atlanta, Buffalo, and DC sports fans. But with all the pain, the joy from watching a curse end is like no other.

I’d like to present a theory on the Minnesota Vikings: The curse of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest freighter on Lake Superior and sank during the regular season of the last Vikings superbowl appearance. They lost and haven’t been back.

I think that quite too often, fans/teams will use a curse as a scapegoat (no pun intended) for a team's shortcomings instead of looking at a team's poor management. Look at the Lions. You need more than a curse to reach ineptitude of winning only one playoff game in almost 70 years.

That applies for teams have have generally been crap for most seasons like the Lions, Timberwolves, or Coyotes. However I think the “curse” feels more real for teams have have fallen short in the final round multiple times while never winning it, like the Vikings, Bills, or Suns

I got drunk with the band Incubus, under the Whittemore Center on campus at UNH, while the Red Sox broke the curse. What a night…and morning, especially for an 18 year old kid. 😅

When it comes to the Sacramento Kings curse, there should’ve been more misfortunes pointed out on: 1958- Maurice Stokes suffers a head injury after a fall from pursuing a rebound. During their flight back to Cincinnati before Game 2, Stokes suffered from seizures due to the cabin air pressure messing with his brain and he became permanently hospitalized after the incident with 6 players on the team retiring on the spot. Basically, the then-Cincinnati Royals almost folded on the spot. 1970- Oscar Robertson gets traded to the Milwaukee Bucks which then he wins a title that season. 1981- The Kansas City Kings at 40-42 broke a playoff win drought of 17 years and go to the Western Conference Finals just to lose to the Houston Rockets who had the same record as them. They wouldn’t win another playoff series for 20 years. 1989- Ricky Barry suicide 1993- Bobby Hurley suffers a career altering car crash Of course you mentioned 2002 already with the egregious calls that went against them in the WCF that year but you didn’t mention that it was the start of a slow decline for the team, which then they eventually had the beginning of a long 17 year drought.

@lakerskid2013 Good points. If the Stokes incident doesn't happen, and if he teams with Oscar Robertson in the 60's, things would have been different. They probably steal a title or two from the Celtics, and maybe they are still in Cincinnati today.

@@jab1289 I never even thought about that one but at all but I do know about how talented he was. Considering that the team almost folded on the spot from that incident, I think it would be very interesting if that never happened at all and the 6 players in turn would’ve still been on the team. That would be something as a great alternate history what if video because it wouldn’t just be Stokes and the Big O together, we’d be talking about some other core pieces that could’ve been part of slowing down the Celtics’ dynasty since they wouldn’t have anything to retire on the spot over.

@@jab1289 Yep, they had 6 players retire immediately following the incident. I couldn’t even imagine how things would proceed in today’s NBA if something like that happened. I mean I know there are more protective measures in place but still, there would be emergency call ups from the G-League and it would be a mess.

I have 3 of my own that I think are real The Curse of Y2K: Ever since 2000, the Yankees have only got to the World Series 3 times and only won once (2009 vs. Phillies), they also have missed the playoffs, finished in the doldrums of the AL East, blew a 3-0 lead in the 2004 ALCS, got embarrassed by 2 young teams in 2001 and 2003, and had multiple players named in the steroid scandal. The Curse of the King: The Lakers, Cavaliers, and Heat have had disastrous campaigns with LeBron James as he has a very toxic personality and insists on doing everything himself. He also has bogged down teams with too many guys who just can't go anymore (Anthony, Howard, Bosh) and have caused his teams to get rid of good and young talent (Walker IV, Postori (unknown draft pick in 2015), Irving, Love) and gets injured more often now which has led to him being in the NBA for over 20 years and having 4 rings (with 3 different teams) to show for it. The Curse of the Gold: Warriors, Raiders, Rams, 49ers, Giants, Kings, Lakers, Clippers, Padres, Chargers. Need I say more?
