The 500 s&w is a very powerful cartridge. Shooting the 440s in my 8-3/8" smith x frame is about all that I can handle. Out of a rifle it should have between 4000 and 4500 ft-lbs of energy. Can't wait to watch you shoot it.

Peteralexben you are right but the difference is not a whole lot and only us handloaders can get the true potential out of the 45-70. The 45-70 is a very fine cartridge indeed though.

Rebekah-Chris S-K And thanks for your comment. Bullberry Barrels motto is "World Famous for Accuracy", but the tech-smith Troy over there reports that the big 500 isn't one of their best for accuracy. I think it was Troy that milled that chamber and muzzle brake. We shall see.... Best to ya, Steve

hemiscrub - Troy at Bullberry Barrels tells me that their 500 S & W barrel buyers report good hunting accuracy, but not the stellar accuracy of their other barrel calibers - the big 500 doesn't report MOA accuracy - perhaps shooting that beast with full loads is not conducive to pinpoint trigger control...kinda like shooting magnum slugs from benchrest. We'll be starting off with reduced loads though to get a sense of the terrain. Have a great day, Steve

I have thought of getting a 500 barrel for my tc katodin. I went with the 45-70 but would like to branch out. I want to do up some 500 mag loads using .50 cal muzzleloader components.

R Lynch - That is certainly the beauty of the Encore platform...just get the barrels and we're in business..!! Sounds like you want to make some 500 S & W Special loads (Starline has the brass) - that would be the way to go making reduced loadings. The 500 Magnum case is just too voluminous to do reduced loads there. In the meantime, your 45/70 can do some great work (or fun - as you prefer). Good shootin' to ya, Steve

Travis Rains - No one really "needs" a 500 S & W, but the caliber is for all those who simply want the "most powerful handgun" cartridge made that is so versatile, it can lob big heavy subsonic bullets right on up to the heaviest loadings able to take any game on planet Earth. No, I do not know what happened to 1957shep - his channel is still up, but he has been inactive for years now. There are many across KZbin that miss him including you and me... Best to ya, Steve

That's not a muzzle brake. It can only be described as a flash hider, if that. The way it's made, it cannot have any effect on recoil or muzzle climb.

KeV E - No need, Kev... I have something for everyone over on the Patreon site... There are 51 OPEN HOUSE ALL VIEWERS videos over there that are not found anywhere else with another 3 more in the scheduled cue. Who knows...? With all the flack that KZbin and other platforms are getting for censoring stuff for political reasons, things might loosen up over there.
