Okay but the trick with using a pencil to hold your gathering threads?! Why have I never thought of that, its *GENIUS!* This apron turned out adorable!

I have never used a pencil but I have used a safety pin and wrapped them in a figure 8 like boat cleat.

Just know that if you "change the fold" from going along the selvedge to folding along the length, any subsequent gathering will act slightly differently. One grain will fall fairly straight whether the other will bubble more.
@Rhaifha
@Rhaifha Жыл бұрын
Even if it's a straight weave? Because that seems like it would be the same regardless as long as you follow the line of either the warp or the weft?
@rachelstelmach698
@rachelstelmach698 Жыл бұрын
@@Rhaifhaeven if it’s a plain weave! While weaving, the warp threads have to be held under tension, while the weft threads do not. In the final fabric, this leads to the warp direction having less “give” than the weft direction. This has implications for cutting layouts (generally, you want the warp threads going vertically so you have a bit more give horizontally for comfort) and for gathers, which can indeed behave differently.

It's a gorgeous apron and long aprons are soooo useful for people who wear long skirts and do a lot of cooking or messy crafting. Have you ever tried the method of gathering where you zigzag stitch over a thin cord? The zigzag basically forms a channel over the cord (dont sew through the cord) and then you gather by pulling the cord (make sure you secure one end of it to the fabric first lol). You can then remove the cord once you've sewn the ruffle to the main body of the project or just trim the excess length and leave it in. It's not as precise as carefully stroked gathers but it works great on thicker fabrics or when you just can't be arsed lol.

Another way to do gathers with thicker fabrics is a zig zag stitch over a cord making sure not to catch the cord. Secure the cord on one end and pull from the other and the thread snapping issue is gone. The gathers aren't as tidy as the double stitch method but is hardly noticed in a thicker fabric like linen or cotton canvas. This is what I do for my vintage inspired [1940s] aprons

Your apron is very beautiful. It is also a masterpiece. That is how I consider it. Although I am a man, I like wearing such aprons, but mine has no ruffles.

We love unintentional complicated “small” projects. Your apron is so cute! I have a cottagecore one, I made it out of some sheer curtain like material and I need to make one of something like cotton or linen, more practical.

Thank you so much for showing us an absolutely adorable apron! Using the pencil to help with gathering was genious. Years ago my mom showed me a nonhistorical, "fast and dirty way" to do gathers. Zigzag a wide and long stitch over crochet cotton (or in a pinch, yarn) and gather as normal. Once sewn in place, you can pull out the crochet cotton to reduce bulk, or leave it to reinforce the seam. Hope this helps someone. Love your channel and much love from Oklahoma!❤

I love the pockets! I've only done simple patch pockets on aprons and since I wear aprons for cooking I end up getting flour and bits of whatever I'm cooking in my pockets. The opening of your pockets is off to the side and hopefully wouldn't catch so much debris. I do love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing your life and creativity with us.

Finagling the fold is great. But the pattern on the fabric I've got for my next project has a definite direction - I've had to buy a whole extra metre in length to make sure everything lines up, and I'm still twitchy 🙃

@@Judoka26 I have not had good luck bleaching white cloth. But I guess you can waterproof it by diluting silicone caulk with some kind of chemical. There is a KZbin video somewhere of a guy making a bed sheet waterproof to show how it works to make a tarp.
