I fell head over heels for MSI when I was 15. Shut me up on a crush's myspace page was how I discovered them. From 15 to 22 I saw them six times. Jimmy knows how to hype an audience but man did he get away with a lot that wouldn't fly today. The early to mid 00's were just a WILD fucking time

This is over a year later, but it's kinda funny - I first really started listening to them when I listened to "Bullshit" on my ex's myspage page. Haha. That was like 2010 or so; I think I was in 8th grade or kinda fresh out (somewhere around there). Didn't really start getting into them until like a year ago, though. Never saw them live or anything. :/

I got recommended MSI on youtube- it was their album IF. My mom was a MASSIVE fan of them, though, and she was enthralled with me finding them. My aunt and her got to see them live, and true to Jimmy's nature, slapped my aunt on the ass after bringing her up on stage. Also true to Jimmy's nature, she was underage. Regardless, my aunt and my mom both recount the whole thing positively and recall everything with a whole lot of joy. Through my mom i got introduced to a bunch of MSI adjacent things like Z? (or JTHM), Invader Zim, and i found some stuff on my own like Black Dresses (fantasic band btw!!). I would love to hear about your experiences with the shows, im a bit of a nostalgia fiend for experiences i didnt have ^^;

MSI deserves way more credit and respect than they get for influencing a ton of popular acts. 100 Gecs and Death Grips both have elements of MSI in them along with a lot of other artists like Grimes; who openely mentioned that Jimmy Urine was a huge influence on her. Their style is one of the most unique I've ever heard, even to this day. Frankstein Girls has some of the best production I've ever heard on an album.

I could give you an entire grocery list of artists both big and upcoming that take a ton from MSI. Even I do with my music. MSI is just one of those unsung heroes sadly, they remind me a lot of bands like From First To Last, The Birthday Massacre, and Cartel for really setting the standard and influencing artists who became huge. I hope they start to get the credit they deserve. Also is your name a reference to Combichrist?

i've found that as time goes on, the name mindless self indulgence is definitely true. it's definitely more of a guilty pleasure band for me since it almost feels wrong to openly listen to them after jimmy's controversy/allegations/whatever you wanna call it, and i've seen allegations of harmful actions thrown at other msi members too. it's a band i have a deep appreciation for but at the same time it's surprisingly good to just have a sort of "brain shutdown" to and just enjoy the weird music without thinking too hard about the lyrics. i've never been able to find anyone who comes close to their sound, and i think msi doesn't get nearly enough credit for how unique and new their music sounds even today.

@@graymads I understand that, I think it would be interesting if you ever had the time. There's a lot of Easter eggs and references to find throughout the album, example: in one of the songs there's the line "It is the omission of the words that gives it is power" which is a reference to the no-no word track on his first demo cassette. a lot of people debate too, if this was him going out and was his final album because he knew of the lawsuit happening before hand, and a lot of the lyrics seem to kind of jive with that idea

Tbh, I always thought msi as a band was genius. I am more of a fan of the earlier albums, Tight, frankenstein girls. I think it's good to separate the art from the artist, speaking on the recent controversy revolving around jimmy. It doesn't not sound like anything else out there, trust me I've looked. And I think that's why I enjoy their music as much as I do. I've seen most of their live shows available just because of the fascination I have of the band.

This is going to get hugely personal, and it needs to be so that I can make my point. Mindless Self Indulgence has had more influence on my development through adolescence than anything else ever could have. It taught awkward, unassertive, and self-conscious teenage me that it was ok, and actually pretty fucking cool to be loud and proud about being weird and gay as fuck. That you can be casually offensive without ill-intent. What originally attracted me was how genius his music was. The juxtaposition of clashing elements, the insane tempo changes without missing a single beat, how he is able to mash a thousand horrible sounds together to create a masterpiece. Their theme/music/style kind of created the entire atmosphere for my teen years. They "felt" like MSI. I would sit in the back of my SUV high as fuck, listening to MSI and having vivid daydreams about all of the perfect little idiosyncrasies in their style and music, how the themes all relate to each other, and why in the end it's all just silly bullshit anyway. There is not a single experience I can compare to these moments and I would give anything to feel that teen MSI atmosphere again. I was infatuated with the philosophy behind it and it helped me understand others and my own place in this world. We are all simply seeking the things that make us happy, and we should stop at absolutely nothing to make this happen. It really helped me stop judging people and to really start to be happy in my own skin. Where the lines between irony, satire, and shock value all blurred together, all being ultimately justified with the phrase "because I want to". This is the influence I needed. Jimmy could wear tutus and prance around singing about his parents fingering him. Why? Because he fucking wanted to. Then him contradicting his own philosophies (making a sellout album after singing about how awful selling out is, becoming edgy and emo after singing about how awful emos can be). This seems to contradict, when actually, it fits right in. He did it simply because he could. Why not be a hypocrite? Who are you hurting? MSI taught us that you can not judge a book by it's cover, that talk is cheap and words and lyrics are bullshit. But if these allegations are true, that flips this all on it's head. Our parents had a right to not let us listen to the old man singing about sex and drugs. That the shock value edge was not just a "fuck you" to those who tried to censor him, and is truly just him being a creep. I used this logic to justify panty shot's existence, thinking all his songs about pedophilia were either him pointing out how horrible it is that these things are normalized in music (I hate jimmy page being about how disgusting pedos are still hugely famous and no one gives a shit), or just him and his odd brand off ultra-ironic-edginess. Now there is a whole new context to these songs. If this does come out to be true, I will be ruined. The single biggest influence on my life was just manipulation from a pedophile. We were his fans with all the love and we were the ones who were fooled. Satire isn't supposed to be real, Jimmy. I really appreciate you going this in depth, as the logic behind their music and personality has been haunting me for a decade. Also one thing I noticed was that their albums fit on a slider. On the left side is "raw crackhead energy", and the right side is "smooth over-arching riffs". The middle is catchy hooks. Albums fit on this scale chronologically. On the left, Tight and despierta los ninos have raw crackhead energy. Frankenstein girls has a mix of the raw energy+smooth riffs+catchy hooks. You'll rebel to anything has much less raw energy but still keeps the smooth riffs and hooks. Then on the right side, How I learned to stop giving a fuck abandoned all crackhead energy and catchy hooks and went for very streamlined hooks, making it pretty unexciting.

Not condoning or condemning the frontman's "alleged" actions. This comment is just strange. He shaped the way you created music as a teenager and as an adult and that will never change... then say much love to "sadly unaware". Weren't you sadly unaware too? Is it the music you like, the lyrics/lyrics, or the "message"? What is your point here? You say the guy that made this video has "gonads" for making the video, as you back up the band, only to then immediately condemn them and come off as condescending toward the fans. Are we allowed to listen to/enjoy the music, or not? You can't have both. Are their albums still on your hard drive? Do you still listen to them?

I literally used the translator all this time just to be able to understand this video (I don't speak fluent English) it's worth it. I can say with certainty that there will NEVER be a band like MSI, two years ago I met the band, and no matter how much I listen to the songs, they never bore me. Jimmy's work independently as well as in the band is excellent, leaving far apart from what he has been accused of lately, good video :)...

MSI was really one of a kind and I'm so grateful that I go to experience their music back in the day when they were one of the bands that I could've easily missed. I was around 13 going on 14 when I discovered them back in 2005 when I heard their song "Stupid MF". I can't remember how I came across them, I think it was from random searching but either way, I thought the song sounded cool and I went out and bought "You'll Rebel to Anything" album shortly after and it became one of my favorite albums, "Straight to Video" is such a good song. I eventually got around to listening to a lot of their other songs and enjoyed most of what I heard. Their sound was just so unique. Like the Birthday Massacre, it was hard to find a band that sounded just like them and I'm just upset that I didn't get exposed to their music sooner. And though their lyrics are randomly immature, it just... works lol And the instrumental work was already solid to begin with (in my opinion)

By sheer random coincidence, today marks the day of me being an MSI fan for 15 years and honestly, there isn't anything quite similar out there One of my buddies showed the Shut Me Up video (which, like I said coincidentally, was 15 years old yesterday, as of me writing this, 23rd of January) and we just laughed our fucking asses off.. kinda fit perfectly into our kinda late, but still 2010-esque humour that would fully awaken during the Vine era of the internet. I thought it was just a funny video (because back then sending these funny clips to others through infra or bluetooth was the norm) but when I realized it was A music video, I did my best to find out who they were because I wanted to hear more. SOMEHOW I did not like Straight to Video initially and was a bit disappointed, but when I found IF, I truly fell in love Mind you, this was during a time when I only had mobile internet, lived almost 10km's away from school and rode bus to get to and go home.. but when I found out about IF, I went out of my way to walk home every single day because coverage was best during the walk (somehow the house I lived in was just in the worst possible location, 3G stopped 20 meters away from the fence.. go figure) and just enjoyed every second of it. Nowadays I'm bored of repetition and can't really enjoy things that I enjoyed one too many times before, but MSI somehow stood the test of time and I can whip out their entire discography while feeling truly entertained the whole way through. If I remember correctly, Revenge was the second song that truly stood out to me, and it wasn't too long before every single song had something unique and special about it that to this day makes it hard for me to pick a true favourite. CASIO, Witness, Cocaine and Troupees, Tornado, Pussy all Night, Do unto others.. your literal feelings and emotions during a day can dictate which song is the standout one, and your favourites go through a cycle during the week and it is really hard to nail down where they truly peak. MSI is one of those true "love it or hate it" kind of once in a lifetime bands that might not achieve success in the literal meaning or what most artists strife towards, but their fans might elevate them to a higher degree (than they might deserve, but thats subjective) I almost feel emberassed to admit that despite everything I love the music that was made, Lyn-Z is probably my favourite person in the whole world when it comes to music and nothing will ever quite get close to the feeling I got from MSI. System of a Down was a surprise to be sure because they gave me the same energy and crazy power that I felt during my MSI days, but I'll remember SOAD for their messaging, deep lyrics and sometimes gutwrenching themes. MSI is in a class of its own (duh, who can name a single industrial jungle pussy punk song in existence) and should be appreciated as such - a guilty pleasure of sorts.. Nowadays I'm a hardcore Keldian enjoyer and nothing in this world will quite make me feel the same way Keldian does, but Celldweller comes in close second when it comes to deep, emotional yet still hard songs and SOAD/MSI following along around the third place for when I feel a certain way. Not sure if my kids will listen to MSI lmao but will surely hear a lot about Keldian - highly recommended when you are coming down from an energetic, bombastic outburst and looking to slow things down and just let the emotions bubble to the surface And as a final note, thank you for this video, really well made and was sight for sore eyes to see someone doing something that isnt blatant downplaying and complaining, but not shying away from actual criticism either. Yes, MSI is a guilty pleasure, but we can't ignore the bad blindly

Frankenstein Girls Will Be Strangely Sexy will always and forever be my favorite. While MSI never really watered down their lyrics or sound for radio You'll Rebel had the more guitar driven and straight forward sound than previous ones ( this is by MSI standards so OBVS we're not talkin radio rock or just standard cookie cutter ) But FGWSSS is the pinnacle of their sound. It's their most unhinged, it's the biggest middle finger to the music industry imaginable, it's them just letting their freak flags fly and go balls to the wall batshit and I'm so here for it

MSI are/were an amazing musical tour de force that took everything that came before them into an adderal fueled blender and laid the ground work for everything that came after. I was there passing out singles cassettes and dressing ambiguously zesty before Frankenstein girls was released. In the 99 to 05 era being a fan and part of that culture was the most punk rock thing you could do because it disturbed and alienated everyone from every other cultural clique. And that was the whole point. Piss everyone off while having a good high energy time. MSI are hands down the torch bearing successors of the Sex Pistols for the Millenial generation. "You ever feel like you've been cheated?".

I fucking love MSI, even the preMSI works, bed of roses, unsociable and others... Just an amazing band... MSI was with me since i was 10 essentially, and i listened to them because that was the only music i had on a cd, burned from my bestfriends brothers collection... I loved them ever since and the love had grown greatly over the years... So much so that i lament not being able to go see them live, given that the band is on hiatus and aint seeing europe since 2013... In a similar fashion do i love the SOAD, and in the same fashion was i exposed to them... BFs bro had a great taste... It fueled years of my gameplaying and going out rollerskating and becoming more and more relaxed through time... And for what it matters, i am not at all moved by allegations... As a line goes in the fuktronic, ``honey, i am not too good to be true, i`m too true to be good... `` Also, wtf, ready for love is fucking amazing... i love their vast range of musical expression and capacity... Shut me up, straight to video, prom, 1989, due, money, bomb this track, eveningwear, 2hookers, toupes and... I mean, they are kinda like soad, being able to make and incorporate rhythms, melodies, sounds and instruments that are soft and gentle to ultra fucking hard and still make it a majestic listening experience... The If album is always on my msi playlists, but that dont mean i dont love the e.p. stuff, f.g.w.s.s. tight, you`ll rebel and others... Hell, i make me cum, but MSI does too...
