I just showed this video to my 97 year old neighbour, who was in the Canadian Navy during the war. Of course she remembered it. She started singing along, and tears came into her old eyes. She was 19 in 1943, fell in love with a sailor, and this was their song. It was very touching to watch her remember.

My great grandfather on my mother's side was a Canadian soldier during WW2. Served in the 7th infantry division from 1942 to 1945, stormed Juno Beach, was shot three times on that beach, barely survived and rejoined his unit once he was strong enough to pick up his rifle. He fought until the war ended and when he came home, the first thing he did was dance with my great grandmother to this song. I remember him asking to have this song play while he laid on his deathbed. This song makes me both sad and happy. Sad because it is a beautiful and powerful song, but it reminds me of a truly great man that I wish I knew better. But, it makes me happy because I know why he wanted to have it play when he passed. He wanted it to play, because he wanted to remember and relive the moments he had with his wife and with the men he served with. Thank you Great Grandpa for fighting so I could be who I am today. Rest In Peace.

@@Traveler_202 This song is a dirge. It is not a happy song. No one should be smiling. The folks singing it here, are to young to understand, and with luck never will. But it was not ironic. It was self conscious defiance. American air crews were dead the day they reported for duty and most of them knew it. They day they would 'meet again' was in the great beyond were it always sunny. I am sorry if this shocks you. But it's time we actually grew up and faced reality. Note : I single out America Air crews, not to detract from any one else, but because of the use of daylight bombing and its impact on attrition rates. Few survived the required missions needed to earn points to go home. And everyone knew it. Planes could be replaced faster than crews so crews had to be used up.

The only suggestion I'd make would be a Heinkel He 111 instead of a Lancaster with the women going to town on the 111 with sledge hammers while they sang.

This song is pure magic.....you can read it in many ways. A love song between two lovers, a song full of faith or friendship, when the dark cloud will be so far away....we will meet again. Love it !

Beautiful choir singing timeless wartime songs. I love to hear you sing. These songs are also appropriate today. Thanks to beautiful British ladies from Norway. During the war, there were also Norwegian pilots who saw the White Cliffs of Dover as their home. God bless all war heroes

My great-grandfather somehow managed to smuggle in our country, a disk of Vera Lynn in 1944 and I still have it. (My family was an anti-fascist Italian family, my great-grandfather one time even drew a mustache on a Mussolini's poster) RIP ENZO CIAMPI (1900-1951)

Nice to relate to your comments Alessandria, I was a kid of 5 or 6, when we had Italian POW's living in a Prison camp adjacent to the Junior school I attended, (Ferncliffe Camp Calverley Woods, West Yorkshire. we kids loved the songs and music they would play on Accordions mainly, many occasions, the British Army guys who guearded them, would permit our entry where we would talk and play games, we didn't know what war was about at that age, but I shall always remember that most of those Italian'Prisoners ' actually stayed in England after the war and many opened interesting food shops.

Vera Lynn was great 👍 really helped us feel better in UK during WWII. My parents went through the war in London. I was born there in 1944 and we came to the US in 1949 on the Queen Mary. Now 79 years old. My wife turned 80 yesterday. I am a veteran of the USAF, 1969-1973.
