Five of my cousins died in combat. Two lay in France. One lies somewhere in the Pacific and two rest here in the states. My fifth great grandfather also died in action. This is my song for them

The war does affect so many of us. My great-grandfather and grand-uncle died in a camp in Dutch East Indies, my great-grandmother and my grandmother's the only two survived World War II, many of her relatives are killed during the Rotterdam Blitz. They evacuated from DEI the day the Japanese lose the war and the Indonesian Republican started to attack the European camps, protected by the Japanese who imprison the Europeans in the first place. First to Ceylon, then Egypt where basically their clothes aren't suitable for the climate anymore and they have to trade everything for warm clothes, then to Netherlands and later America. I keep thinking that this could be a song that my grandmother would like to listen to, after all that hardship she endured during the World War II

My Father served in the Pacific and bore the scars of that war for the rest of his days. My Uncles served in that war and the "Police Action" that followed it. One who is my "Found Brother" served in Mogadishu and still tries to deal with what happened there. We are soon to be without the presence of the WWII generation so we'd better sit up, shut up, and pay damned close attention to what they have to teach us. Patriots, Citizen Soldiers, Fathers, Sons and Brothers. I fear that some lessons must be learned anew by each succeeding generation.

Yes, our family was lucky too. One Uncle in the war from 9/3/39 till the end. A Desert rat. Another going ashore on D-Day +2. A Nan who roamed the streets in the middle of the night worrying about her sons.

@Andrew iow Thank you Andrew. I remember now that is after my birth. Food still had to purchased with coupons. I remember dumping flour and other ingredients from the cupboard all over my young brother. We were 2 and 3.. Dad was supposed to be watching us while mum was out. He worked so hard, he fell asleep 😊😊😊

My family comes from southern Europe ( the Balkans ) so around your period of birth my family was either hiding and fighting in a rebellion for freedom and you just reminded me how thankful I am for them. My great great grandfather sacrificed himself to keep his family alive and was sent to a concetration camp while his children could hide in the forests near the family home. If not for this sacrifice I might not exist today

Thank you, ladies. My Dad was a ball turret gunner in B-17's. He lived of course or I would not be writing this. I know you are English, but I suspect you sing for all those who made the sacrifice of serving during such trying times, both the quick and the dead. My Dad loved England when he was there. Were he still alive I am sure he would have loved you as well. Beautiful, respectful, and dignified.

This made me think of my father, who died about 6 1/2 years ago (Oct 23, 2013). He was a World War II veteran, in the Army Air Force. He wasn't in actual combat, but worked behind the scenes for 3 1/2 years as a laboratory technician. He would have loved this piece. It made me think of him and the tears are gushing out. Missing him each and every day.

It has been a long while since a song has made me cry, but this one did. I just discovered your music and was sitting embroidering when the lyrics for this song hit me. I am still crying. I do listen to WW2 songs on occasion, so war songs don't affect me often. However, there is something about this song that made me stop, listen, and cry. Thank you.

Yes, I agree! But I also think it had to do with the song and it’s aesthetic. This is a lonely song that you sing to a loved one who will never return home. I’ve always thought about the girls in the back as if they were representing those who were lost, forever in uniform and fighting for our country, frozen in time.

While many of the soldiers and civilians that fought and supported the troops during both World Wars were Christian there were also troops of many faiths including an estimated 2.5 million Muslim soldiers and civilians that fought and supported the Allied war effort. Add to this the Jewish fighters as well as those that followed other or no faith and you have a mixture of people who fought for freedom and basic decency often to protect people they had never met before and never would again.
