My wife got one of these from her grandmother as a 21st birthday present in 1971. As she is slightly disabled the handbrake was moved from the centre to the right. It was an amazing little car and on a good day you could wind it up to 80mph on the motorway! Being a 6 volt 2 cylinder, starting was not always easy. The dealer fitted an electronic ignition system that he had made, and it was much more efficient after that. We had no particular bother with it, only a belt change during routine servicing. We got 47 miles to the gallon, amazing at the time.

Interesting and attractive cars. Amazing that the first model (600/33) lasted until virtually the end of Daf car production in '75/'76. The rear styling is particularly good I think, makes it look like a larger and more upmarket car. As for the Volvo 300 Series, it always had a strong following in the UK and remained a popular model right up until the end of production. I never got the chance to buy a new 300 Series as I had only just passed my driving test and started working when they were discontinued. But I did make up for this in January 1995 with my first brand new car . . . a Volvo 440 of course! Very good memories of this car and the most excellent S40 that followed it in March 2003. I am quite a fan of the Dutch car industry!

Back in the 1970's and early 1980's automatic transmissions were rare in Europe, especially on small cars. The DAF 33 is a childhood memory for me. My grandfather was disabled and could not use a clutch pedal, so he drove a DAF 33 variomatic. It was a very exotic car in Montpellier, southern France, and actually the only DAF-branded car I ever saw and drove with.

I have longed for a Daf 33 since I was a child, I would still love one, but I've never ever seen any Dafs for sale, sadly. Daf's are totally awesome as far as I'm concerned, years ahead of their time! I so wish there was a good book about the history of Daf cars, in English. Never seen or heard of one though.

The Daf 33 was initially called Daffodil with a funny shaped bonnet before the facelift. I remember an old lady near me who had a yellow 33 until the mid 1980s. Used to like the sound of the engine.

In the 1960s many driving schools in the UK bought DAFs (which were by far the cheapest cars with automatic transmission at the time) and put signs on the roof saying "Pass your driving test automatically with DAF". Then the government changed the rules so that passing the test in a car with automatic transmission would earn a licence that was only valid for driving cars with automatic transmission. The driving school DAFs then quickly disappeared.

Another couple of interesting things about DAF: I think the DAF 44 was the last car on sale in the UK to have a 6 volt electrical system. The Variomatic transmission in its original form with two belts works as a limited-slip differential, making the car less likely to get stuck in snow or mud.
@basswomper1785Ай бұрын
Fond memories of my DAF 44 back in the late 70s. Economical and unusual to drive at the time with the CVT transmission. I got rid of it because of suspension issues but it was the most rust free car of that time I ever owned. Everything else just seem to dissolve!

I suspect that many people, like me, only need such a car for almost all journeys. I drive a Sandero and if I look around me when stuck in traffic I am usually the smallest vehicle by far. Even worse most are occupied only by the driver with about 1/4 by driver+1 passenger. We have gone mad with the design of modern cars.

I agree. Cars today have become too big. We need to go back to smaller cars - but more importantly, making them 'the norm', not something that stands out.

@vanceblosser2155Ай бұрын
I agree about the reliability but the reason for the change in modern cars is that the DAF design was limited to fairly low horsepower ratings. Horsepower has been steadily increasing since the 1960s and the DAF design would have trouble handling the smallest of modern engines.

@@lesklower7281 There is a slight snag with the DAF transmission: because of the use of a centrifugal clutch it cannot make use of engine speeds below about 2000rpm. This limits the fuel economy that can be achieved when the car is driven mainly at low speeds. There was a double centrifugal clutch that was used on the French Motobecane Mobylette mopeds that once engaged would stay fully engaged without slip until the engine speed dropped some way below normal idle speed. Possibly something like this could be used with the DAF transmission.

Waarom nou zo lichtgeraakt reageren?
