It varies massively. Genesis of the Daleks has them at their most threatening, but they weren't nearly as intimidating in any of the previous three Dalek stories or the next one. You can't divide it into "old Daleks scary, new Daleks not scary," because they have had some very effective appearances in New Who and some absolutely ridiculous ones in Classic Who, but there is a general pattern of a single Dalek, or a small group of Daleks, being a more credible threat than an army of Daleks, and the Daleks usually being at their best when they're effectively scheming their way up from a position of relative weakness, like in Genesis, Power of the Daleks or Dalek. And this is, IMO, the one Davros story where his presence doesn't make the Daleks themselves less scary.

Everything about this scene is perfect. The sheer terror that is conveyed through Ronson's pleas, the sharp intensity of the Dalek death ray with its piercing sound effect, the Kaleds shielding their eyes with their hands and arms to protect themselves from the intensity of the blast - all of these things combine to make this scene a brilliant demonstration of the chilling nature of the Daleks and what they represent. The Daleks are the ultimate representation of relentless, merciless, indiscriminate death.

Not indiscriminate. They discriminate against anyone who isn't Dalek.

You've literally just described a very normal death scene. The acting of Ronson's pleas is nothing special at all. The dalek death ray is just a filter. The Kaleds shielding their eyes is just something they would logically do. Surely these kinds of things happen in every extermination? I've only watched a few episodes of classic doctor who but is this really "perfect"? Must be a low bar for this era of the show.

Love the 70s Dalek stories, but after the 60s the daleks looked more static in their movements , in the 60s everything constantly moved , sucker arm, gun, eyestalk constantly moving around, even different personalitys with the dalek voices, something that seemed lost on the dalek operators later on
@paulhunter67422 жыл бұрын

Yeah, the 60s twitchy constant movements made them feel more like living things. They even had a iris that moved originally. Plus the voices I also agree on. Almost every Dalek in the 60s sounded slightly different. They did certainly lose something post 60s and never quite got it back.

How nice of Davros to blame his own act of betrayal/treachery on poor Ronson. Then again, after Ronson had interfered with Davros' earlier Dalek experiment/prevented The Doctor from becoming the very-first Dalek victim, Davros did say that Ronson would later be punished for his interference/insubordination. Though I don't think that Ronson would have perhaps envisaged becoming the very-first Dalek victim himself. Then again, maybe that summed Davros up, utterly mad/evil/ruthless, and willing to stop at nothing in his quest for ultimate power, including wiping out members of his own race
