The dance class/acting class stories and the bathroom scene in Remedial Chaos Theory show how Britta and Troy both struggle with their respective gender stereotype and how they both feel the need to appear invulnerable. Jeff and Pierce also struggle with these issues, but what sets Troy and Britta apart is that they can talk to each other about it. When Britta notices Troy struggling with these issues, like when she catches him attending a dance class, Troy responds with honesty- he doesn’t shut people out the way Jeff and Pierce do. And the other thing that sets Troy apart from Jeff and Pierce is that his kindness pushes him to do brave things, like in this clip. I think my biggest gripe with season 4 is that the writers forgot that at his core, Troy is empathetic and caring, and that’s what makes him heroic. It’s what gives him the patience to deal with Abed when he’s acting up. It’s what makes him loyal to the toxic study group, because he sees the good/doesn’t see the bad in all of them (exemplified when he explains to Annie how well he knows her). And it’s what makes him great with Britta, because when he showed her kindness in this clip, it set off a feedback loop where they brought out the kindness, vulnerability, and consequent emotional growth in each other. They noticed each other struggling with the same things, they felt comfortable enough to confide in each other, which brought them closer. Repeat. So when they made gas leak Troy a meme machine that was only nice to Abed and was especially mean to Britta, it sucked.
@crazeladd3 жыл бұрын
You raise some good points; I never even realized that gas leak Troy REALLY was off when interacting with Britta as compared to when they were in this scene and Remindal Chaos Theory.
@Joe_Parmesan3 жыл бұрын
Well said. The characterization felt a bit off the mark for everyone, except Shirley and Jeff. Pierce was mainly kept as a background character, but he was surprisingly okay, while Troy, Abed, Annie, and Britta all lost considerable depth, especially Annie and Abed. Annie became so attached to Jeff, to the point where they seemed like they were boyfriend and girlfriend more than Troy and Britta ever did during that season. In addition, Abed sort of became a shell of his usual character.

No, that's absolutely valid. That feeling is one of the most soul shattering experiences in life. Painful yet so humiliating you often can't even react. Often having a crush is about quietly hoping for miracles. Sure it's stupid, but most daydreams are stupid. Then a couple longshot scenarios start to seem believable or even likely, and you don't even realize it's too late. It's holding hands, an inside joke, or some other random unexpected affection and suddenly you realize the fantasy was all you had. If there's a moment that makes you feel more lonely, along with being a complete idiot, I can't think of it.

Britta and Troy haters: "They were so weird together...they had no chemistry...putting them together was another S4 misfire..." This episode: "Am I a joke to you?" (Obviously they're not romantically inclined towards each other like they would be in S3, but it's clear they have great chemistry, bring out the best in each other and genuinely enjoy each others' company. S1-3 laid the groundwork, S4 completely dropped the ball, but S5 gave them a worthy sendoff 🥰)
