This has been my big struggle for this year's Advent fast, so this video was so welcomed and helpful for me. And it's good to know that I'm not the only Orthodox person who struggles with distraction from social media.

You are not alone, my friend. It's a battle! I have incorporated many new habits since this episode, and yet it's still difficult! ☦

Excellent topic -- one of the most important. Stillness - hesychasm is the principle of ascetic and monastic life (which is not limited to monks and nuns). "A brother came to Scetis to visit Abba Moses the Strong and asked him for a word. The old man said to him, 'Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything.'" From "The Sayings of the DESERT FATHERS -- The Alphabetical Collection" Translated, with a foreword by Benedicta Ward, SLG Preface Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh First published in 1975 by Cistercian Publications, Kalamazoo and A. Dare I say, this was a pleasant distraction for husband and I on our way to the park and ice cream shop in the car instead of listening to "worldly music!" Keep up the insight!

71F here. I get distracted at least as much when I don't have any digital media around. My mind just seems to associate freely from one thought to the next before I realize it. Usually not sinful thoughts, just random day to day observations and memories. To be honest, most of my distractions come from inside myself. But then, I don't watch TV/streaming shows or movies or sports. I hardly ever listen to broadcast radio. I don't have satellite or cable. I watch educational stuff on YT and that's about it.

Thanks for sharing. Was the decision for removing streaming/TV due to trying to intentionally avoid the harms of excessive use or are those things just not a draw for you?

@TheTransfiguredLife I couldn't stand to watch it anymore. Too many blatant lies and false allegations in the news media. Comedy is pretty much dead because of fear of cancelation. Nobody on the left can take a joke, unless it's directed at conservatives. The drama and reality shows are mostly tawdry and dirty. There is rarely anything uplifting, and most shows promote a purely secular and materialistic world view. When anything spiritual is mentioned, including at Christmas time, heretical oe even pagan beliefs arise unchallenged. Sports have gotten political, so they're no fun to watch anymore. I also refuse to support the media conglomerates.
