Today lets sit down and talk about the negatives and cons after weight loss surgery with a gastric bypass and after me and my husband lost a dramatic amount of weight
We hope this gives you some insight into our weight loss journey so far and helps give you a balanced view on this surgery. This is not something that should be taken lightly and I want to be open and honest about our experiences
That being said me and Dean both wouldn't change this decision for the world, it has opened up so many more doors and opportunities for us personally and has given us a much better quality of life
If you guys are considering Nords please reach out to my husband dean as they do do a partner programme you can find him right here over on instagram, he'll also be happy to answer any questions about his journey you might have:

One thing I totally forgot to mention as a potential Con is the effect of Dumping syndrome: 💖I suffer from Late-Dumping syndrome which is Reactive Hypoglycemia, If i eat very simple carbs and sugars, my blood sugars will spike, due to the way my body now digests these sugars now, which then in turn makes me have low blood sugars around a hour or so after eating, I have symptoms like: dizziness, shakiness, sweating ect I have actually had around 3 occasions where this was really scary because I felt like i was going to pass out 💖 I also personally cannot physically eat alot of sugar because it causes strong bloating and discomfort which is early Dumping syndrome (although Dean can tolerate more than me) 💖 To mitigate this I need to make sure I either avoid all these simple carbs, or have a snack to hand to help boost it again (I do try in my normal day to day life to avoid this from happening) But oftehn when I travel I like to taste new foods, and have to always be wary of this and carry snacks like apples, oranges ect. 💖 This is a common side effect of the Gastric bypass in particular and is actually the reason why I opted for the bypass over the sleeve here is why: I personally LIKE this, because it helps me make healthier choices because it's not worth the feeling of late dumping syndrome that I get and knowing I struggle already with sugar addiction prior to my surgery, I really wanted something to help me avoid it, so it's almost like a negative re-inforcement. And it does really help, I do try sugary foods when I travel and have a little snack, but only tolerate a tiny amount, this in turn has helped me. make better low-sugar choices in my day to day life, and when I travel and want to taste new foods I have to be mindful of what I am trying So sorry I totally forgot to mention this in the video, hopefully this will give you more insight, If you watched my last gastric bypass video what I eat in a day in Animal kingdom, you'll actively see me developing dumping syndrome and I had to sit down and grab a orange to help the dizziness! I hope this video provided you some balanced insights to my journey so far, if you have any other questions please leave them in the comments and Ill be posting a Big Q&A after the Canada Series! YOU DA BEST Love, Catherine xxxx

After my bypass, I nearly died after eating a broth soup. My blood sugar dropped to 35, unexpectedly and suddenly. I've also had VERY serious liver issues. My enzyme's were 1000 times higher than safe. This came with significant pain in my right side, to the point where I considered just ending it all, because I hurt so bad I couldn't leave the bed. Now, I've gained back almost all of the weight, but I'm working hard to get back down. I just know that had I known what I would have faced, I don't know I would make the same decision. Spilt milk... but I will NOT stop trying to be better every day.

after 1.5 years I have also developed reactive hypoglycemia, and have had the sweating and feeling faint quite a few times. Very scary, but now I kinda know when it starts, and quickly eat high sugar things, like jellies or the dextro energy glycose, helps within 10 minutes. (also im kinda glad its not just me) (its manageable, and for me the only bigish downside)

Wig tip: I lost most of my hair after the weight loss surgery too. Nothing made it better and it doesn't really grow back. After a few years, I finally tried to wear wigs. I now wear them all the time and feel confident again. I recommend you wear the wig in the house, everyday, for an hour or two. That is what helped me figure out how to really wear it so it looks natural and get used to them. You will love wigs, you get to have your dream hair! 😊❤🏵

Check out kinging-it (you might already watch them since they are van-lifers) but after Aimee went through chemo 10+ years ago she started wearing wigs and fell in love and she's got a massive collection and she just rotates them to whatever she's feeling that day - she's made videos about this too - just if you need some wig-spiration :) @@catherinekayy

@@catherinekayy i also vote for the wig option. the hair extensions clip on or tape ins contribute to hair loss too. traction alopecia. it's okay to wear like once a week/special occasions but if worn daily, the hair follicles get really stressed because of the additional weight. you will see a difference in hair growth when taking a break from the extensions.

Regarding the tummy. Fat will partly be removed regardless, as it’s stuck to it. But also please don’t forget that as a woman it’s literally biologically decided that fat will be there as it protects the uterus as well.

My 2 year anniversary is coming up June 1st and I too expetienced kidney stones last summer...the pain was SO INTENSE...I thought I was dying!!! Ended up at hospital twice! Also, i have fine hair too and it fell out in clumps around the 6 month but now it has been growing back quick as per my hairdresser. I also sufferred from dehydration right after the surgery with terrible migraines and was in hospital on iv fluids too. Complications can happen with any surgery. A good medical support team and family will make all the challenges a little easier as you embark on your weight loss journey! All the best everyone❤ Take care Catherine & Dean❤

I've been following both your journey's on IG and on here, and I love that you posted this video! I had a gastric sleeve about 18 months ago, and I relate to SO much of what you said. Especially in regards to the anxiety! My hair loss really got me down a lot too. It hasn't been an easy journey, or an easy fix, but ultimately it has been the best decision I've ever made. I too had struggled with infertility, my husband and I had been TTC for around 12 years which is ultimately why I decided to have the op, and I'm so lucky that I'm now 24 weeks pregnant with our first baby. Sending you lots of love and I hope it happens for you and Dean soon too 💛 xxx

Thank you so much Catherine for the update. I DO!! I have that anxiety. I had that the minute I woke up from the surgery! It was horrifying to realise you've done something to your body that is not reversible. The feeling of what done is done. And the pain I woke up into made me regret the whole thing so badly at that point. Luckily that went past in a day's time. I've researched a bit that for by pass, since they didn't take anything out of your body, should anything really happen, it is not as irreversible in a way? I am not sure if this is right. And I have been having these waves of anxiety more often than before. I was prone to anxiety prior to surgery but I got much better. So yes, I do sense that the anxiety crept back. I can't believe what Dean had gone through! Thank God that he is alright. I am 6 weeks post op now but I did a sleeve gastrectomy instead of a by pass. I've lost over 30 pounds as of date. I am struggling to get enough protein and water in me still. It is so reassuring when you said you will still go through with it now that you've faced the hair loss and the loose skin. I am still curious as to why you chose a by pass instead of a sleeved in the first place? I also suffer a lot about image because I am big. I would have thought loosing the weight and slimming down would help with the image issues? Do you mind telling a bit more as to why slimming down actually lead you to seeking therapy regarding body image but not earlier? Thank you so much and I LOVE YOU!!!

I have actually been trying out shapewear and I think this may help you! They have different levels of compression and I like level 1 for light compression. It's very comfortable and just feels like a swimsuit if that makes sense? It just hugs you nicely and helps shopping a lot. I agree with seeing a surgeon! If you have questions, that's what they're also there for. I've made page long lists of Q's and gone to specialists just for that. Also, it's a good way to sus out a good doctor who listens and really understands and can calm any fears you have.

I relate to your story a lot. We’re similar in age and I decided to get a VSG about four years ago. I have lost over 100 lbs and I’m so glad I made that decision for my health because I have struggled with it since my teens due to hypothyroidism and having my thyroid removed at 17. I have some loose skin (especially in my tummy area and thighs). I dealt with a lot of hair loss too which calmed down after two years post op so hopefully it gets better for you soon! The worst complication I had was since surgery was my body creating too much bile so I had awful stomach cramping and ridiculous diarrhea. They were able to find a medication that I take daily that completely resolved this as long as I take it every day. I wouldn’t change my choice to get the surgery because I am so much healthier and we are hoping it helps us conceive a child together soon now that I’m at my target weight. Not sure if this might be helpful Catherine, but we just decided to try using the Kegg device to help with conception and it might be worth looking into especially if right now you’re classified as “unexplained infertility”. Wish you all the best! Such a wonderful informative video and I’m happy for you both.

Well done Catherine - you have done so well, I bet you feel amazing! I'm always after more tips on protein intake if you have any?. I had the gastric sleeve in April 2023 and am currently 7.5 stone down from 22st 4lb - I wondered if having a gastric sleeve restricts food intake more than a bypass due to the stomach only being 20% of the original size? I still only eat quite small amounts and can only ever order off the kids menu or have a starter as a main if going out - even then it's a struggle. Saving a fortune on food though! I also get instantly sick (toiletwise 😅)if I have anything high fat/high sugar such as a Costa hot chocolate. Im already thinking about excess skin, it seems to be worst on bum and thighs for me - can't imagine the pain of recovering from that! Any advice on what to do in terms of clothing style? Ive spent so long in baggy clothes that I dont knwo what to wear or what looks good anymore. Some friends (slightly unkindly I thought) said they couldnt tell I'd lost weight because I'm still wearing baggy jeans and jumpers. Is there somewhere to go to get advice?

The hair loss actually depends how fast you loose weight. If you moderately reduce your calories and make sure to eat nutricious meals you should not see hair loss while loosing weight. The less drastic measures you take to loose the weight and the more time it takes, the less side effects will be noticed.

Ot would be great if you could share in detail what and how mich of what you eat at the moment. How do your meals look like and how many calories do you consume approximately per day? Are there certain foods and drinks that you avoid? Regarding therapy - to me it would make a lot of sense that people who undergo gastric bypass operation would have several months of mandatory therapy sessions before the procedure. Maybe this could help the patients get into right mindset/remove trauma to be able to loose the weight naturally without the need for an operation.

Can I just thank you so so much for your honesty. I am going to my first surgeons appointment next week after being on the NHS Weight Management program for the last 3 years. So far I have lost 4 stone but I still have so much more to go. Heaviest 33.5 stone and now currently 29 stone. I am not overly concerned about the loose skin or hair loss, the main thing I'm concerned about is my mental health and if I will ever be happy with the weight loss. I think I may look out therapy to start before I have the surgery so thank you for bringing that point up. I too am hoping to conceive after surgery, that is the dream, but if not just to be healthier to adopt a child. We did conceive once when I was 26 stone in 2017 but unfortunately if didn't stick. I wish you all the luck in the world that one day you will have the baby you dream of 💗

Before getting the surgery I highly suggest you try the supplements that worked for me, took me 4 month to loose the weight, was given an absurd price for the surgery but luckily I came across the supplement I later used

I would research biotin a bit more as I have heard it’s not worth it, as someone who has chemical damage I am trying to get my hair back to it original thickness and a million years ago when I was blogging I tried protein shakes for the blog and a happy side effect of this was my hair growing so I’m trying this out now, also protecting your hair while you sleep from breakage with either a silk pillowcase or bonnet or putting it in a pigtails or one braid helps, also if you haven’t already look at at home hair porosity test (literally just a glass of water and a strand of hair) and you can see if you need keratin or protein conditioner masks. Hope this helps ❤

I remember in one of your travel vlogs you had said you get the shakes. Did you have that before the bypass, and if you did, has it gotten worse, better, or generally stayed the same? I get the shakes from low blood sugar, and I'm interested in a bypass as well, so it would be nice to know if/how it'll affect the shakes.

Thank you for being so open and honest and emphasising what a big deal this is! I am about 10kgs lighter than you were, but I am very lucky that my health has not been affected by my weight. It's more the other way around, my weight being affected by chronic illness and medications.(Before anyone reacts to this, yes I am being closely followed up by my doctor and we take blood tests etc regularly :) ) Weight and health is so complicated! I also appreciate you not talking about this on Katnipp, and keeping it all about the business

Ooh thank you for this video. I've been considering getting weight loss surgery a lot lately too and I am definitely thinking I want to start the process this year. It is good to also hear the bad sides of it, especially as a thing to look out for. Where I'm from I am glad the weightloss surgery has to be done with a 4 year long aftercare program, where you have regular meetings with a group of people who had the same surgery around the same time, but also meetings with a dietician and phychologist afterwards, so I'm hoping that some of the issues your husband had would be picked up on sooner by someone. Also the hairloss issue is something I really wonder about too for me. I never really cared about my hair at all and I can't imagine me having an issue with havind hair loss, but that's easy to say now I don't deal with it...

Yes thats a brilliant aftercare programme, I think if Dean chased up his problems instead of keeping his head down he might have been able to avoid it getting so bad! 🌷 Good luck on your health journey no matter what you decide to do! xxxx

Thanks for sharing your story with us. If you want children, I’d wait until after your pregnancies to do a tummy tuck. Yes it SUCKS to wait, but you wouldn’t want to go into your pregnancies with more scar tissue than necessary. Yes you’d have young kids recovering from the tummy tuck, but I think you’d be happier with the result over all.

Hi hunny, wow this was very interesting, thank you so much for sharing Catherine. with your hair loss i am just wondering if you could also be peri menopausal? my hair started falling out when i was in my 30's and i never had surgery except having my son in my 20's. so maybe that might be contributing as well?? hormones and thyroid are also hair loss contributors. Diana xx

I have always thought you were beautiful. Years ago when I first watched your early katnipp vids I thought- oh my goodness she's so pretty! And I have thought that ever since and never thought your hair looked weird or bad or anything. Of course, this is not really the point of this video (and thank you for sharing all of this journey!) but I just wanted you to know!

Not exactly the same at all. But I had the plastic braces as well and I was following the instructions to a T. So that included the ‘have it in for 22 hours a day’ etc. And I got anxious from it as I was afraid I’d give me a eating disorder. As I only had two moments a day in which I’d be allowed to eat and it made me binge eat etc.

Thank you for sharing! For hair, look up PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for the scalp. It's like a vampire facial, and after a few sessions, the hair grows back. I'm in Los Angeles, but I'm sure it's in the UK as well.

Well done on your weight loss x. Just to note that hair loss can be experienced by anyone losing weight at a fast rate. I experienced hair loss when I lost 4 stone by alternating my diet and walking. I found that Biotin helps loads as well xxx

It might be worth getting your iron levels checked. I was experiencing hair loss and it's not solely weight related. Low iron can lead to it along with certain thyroid conditions. I also found that with taking iron pills my mood is better and I don't have nearly so many anxiety thought spirals. Myo-inositol can also help with certain hormone conditions. I have PCOS and it helps to lift my mood and it can improve fertility. Always a good idea to talk to a doctor before taking anything new, but myo-inositol is a supplement and my doctor confirmed that it doesn't interfere with any of my other medication.

As a mom of 3, I would recommend having kids and then the tummy tuck. Pregnancy can cause more lose skin and stretch marks. It can also make the abdominal muscles separate. A tummy tuck would not only get rid of the loose skin but it could reduce the stretch marks and they can also repair the muscles just in case yours separate permanently from pregnancy. It's called diastasis recti.

here‘s my question (already posted it on another video, don’t remember which tho 😅): so i’ve been told that after my bypass I will never be able to drink sugary fizzy drinks, alcohol, or eat sweet foods. or eat and drink at the same time. now i’ve seen you do exactly that and i was wondering when you were able to do this again. and if you think everyone is able to add this back to the diet or if it depends on how you tolerate it.

I haven't had WLS but I have had a kidney stone at 21 which caused a kidney infection and it was the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life. Mine was actually when I was at my healthiest because I was eating spinach leaves every day (because so many recipes used them), which is so ironic. I had to get an ambulance to hospital because I couldn't walk from how bad the pain was. Definitely do not recommend getting a kidney stone, poor Dean. :')
