So how have these recent trends caused this mayhem but over a decade of Grand Theft Auto has not? It’s because kids can actually tell the difference between reality and fiction. TikTok showed them real people doing a real thing that can be duplicated. That’s why social media is a bigger corrupting influence than video games, comic books, or movies.
@SoundBubble Жыл бұрын
Tbh, if they gave you an easy to replicate tutorial in GTA, there'd absolutely be people doing that as well, while it's unlikely that your average 11 year old will hijack a car by holding the driver at gunpoint or ripping them off the driver's seat at a red light. I get your point, but the comparison doesn't really work that well. Edit: I don't think video games cause violence or make people into school shooters. Neither do I think that kids can't tell the difference between reality and video games or replicate everything they see in them. But I do believe, and to some extent know as I have witnessed it myself, that some will try dump shit they see when it is exciting or gains them something, is relatively low-risk and easily replicable, regardless of the medium they saw it in.

@@keleynal4424 Of course, I'm not disagreeing with your point that TikTok is the bigger (negative) influence here and caused this while GTA didn't. But as you said, fortunately the chances of major games, movies etc. to take that risk is slim.

The thing that disturbs me the most about all of this, and the thing that is really at the core of it all is empathy. It is a complete absence of empathy for other people. Your fellow human means nothing. The only thing that matters is you and getting your 15 seconds of fame, of getting strangers to pretend that they like you, of seeing the number of likes go up. And that on it's own I understand. I'm sure as hell not immune to wanting fame, to wanting money, wanting people to like me. But it's when those things come at the cost of hurting other people that I can no longer relate. Social media can bring out the best and worst in people. It's just so sad how many people seem to be capable of the worst. And it's just plain scary that young kids grow up seeing this stuff. I have this fear that within a few generations, empathy as a trait will be bred out of the gene pool all together.

Small correction, immobilization systems aren't expensive to produce or install in any way, they are simply only available on higher trim vehicles, to strong-arm people into upgrading to a more expensive package when buying a new car. I worked at Nissan as the service advisor for 4 years, I ordered a lot of parts myself and had to review and approve any part orders over $300. On most vehicles, the actual immobilizer system is built into every ECU or BCU, but the software is only enabled and the transceiver that goes around the ignition cylinder is only installed on higher trim vehicles with the chip-keys. Thus the transceiver and the key chip (and sometimes the wiring harness) is the only physical hardware missing when the system is not installed on a vehicle. for the 350Z that I almost bought my last year there, a new transceiver ring was about $45 our cost.
@MyRegardsToTheDodo Жыл бұрын
And it's also required by law in a lot of countries, that's why this "challenge" happens only in the US and not in Canada, for example.
@operator8014 Жыл бұрын
Another point here, I far prefer to own vehicles with non-transponder keys(steel keys) the immobilizer system can screw up, a dead battery can remove the transponder code from the car, meaning your factory key cannot start the vehicle. A lost key on a newer vehicle can easily cost $500 - $1500 to replace and reprogram keys, and thats only if there is a company nearby that can do the work. Here in Alaska, there are dealerships that have left vehicles sitting on their lot for months and even years while awaiting transport down to Washington via barge in order to have the work done of replacing/reprogramming the entire ECU and transceiver assembly, as that's the only way to bypass the "security system". I prefer it so strongly that the one transponder-equipped vehicle I've ever owned (2016 WRX), I removed the transponder chip from the head of the key and hot glued it to the back of the transceiver inside the steering column, so any key with the correct bitting would function as normal. If you're concerned about theft, just have a toggle switch installed that cuts the power feed to the fuel pump or something similarly necessary for engine operation. Nobody would ever think to look for something like that unless they themselves installed it..

The automobile industry is quite awful this way. It's crazy that it still works. It was already ridiculous when $100 components were sold for $3500... then they figured out they can build the exact same car and just lock it down in software :D

EDIT: I'm glad I have a car with an immobilizer. And my dad's van - they broke the ignition when they hotwired it, so the cops showed my dad how to do it! When the cops did find it the lot that had it didn't have working phones for 2 more months. And the cops put that my former boss owned the car and weren't going to release it to me. It was 2 hours away and I had the title in hand. It is an absolute nightmare. When I did get the car back all the stations were changed to Tejano stations and there were stolen items from the robbery still in the car. The most valuable thing in there was my Cd collection. That hurt the most. I had a ton of very niche CDs. Some are very difficult to find and others I special ordered. To say I hate thieves is an understatement.

@@nojuanatall3281 Thanks for your story, I know how much it sucks to be violated in any way, but I do think that telling the story helps the speaker and the one who listens. Something mildly amusing that you would definitely understand from your altered radio settings: When my dad got his van back, the cops hotwired the ignition and the radio came on blasting rap music. They looked at my dad (career Navy officer) and said "Sir, is this your music?" They ejected the cassette and took it as evidence. Maybe they got some fingerprints off it. Probably not. It did make a funny anecdote to an otherwise crappy experience.

Let's be fair, all that this has changed is the speed and scale of the feedback loop of social mechanics. Disaffected young people will always be doing absolute nonsense, the difference is that hyper-speed parasocial communication allows these acts of youthful stupidity to be co-ordinated, instant trends. I doubt there's more stupid acts of vaguely self-destructive bravado than before, they're just extremely noticeable when they are this combination of unusual and coordinated that social media trends thrive on.

Decades ago, the CARTOON Beavis and Butthead had to add a disclaimer "not to do this at home"... because young people were watching a CARTOON and attempting to replicate the behavior and actions on they saw on TV. Bad idea, because if you ban it for them, they will see it as some sort of "forbidden fruit", which will make it way more interesting for them. You know, I would agree that adolescents are approaching the point where they can be reasonably expected to know right from wrong. I understood that you shouldn't steal a car when I was 13. It is also true that information about how to commit crimes exists outside of social media here, but I don't think that social media has nothing to do with it. Anyone with a younger sibling knows, if you teach them how to do a bad thing and then they do it, the adults are definitely going to come after you for it. Sure you can say they could have learned it from somewhere else, but you definitely had something to do with it. If you are going to be interacting with children, then I believe you have an ethical duty to be mindful of what you do and say to them. To be fair, I've run this sort of thought process. The best case scenario on TikTok is when you do something, and you get *very few,* if *any at all,* views... and then you're discouraged from using the app. You're dissuaded from the illusion of attention that it truly has developed. And the worst case scenario is to *go viral.* Because then, you want to do more and more, because you feel like you're leading people - and you're going to do more and more dangerous things. TikTok is reality, as one had said. Compared to games like GTA, kids know it's a *game.* But TikTok is... It really is reality - it's people doing stupid things. To kill everything on TikTok, all you need to do is restrict - or even fabricate statistics of - views down to near-zero. You need to make people realize it's terrible, it's not going to work out well. And even if you have to lie to stop it all, any way to stop it is best, other than just straight up completely killing the app.
