Hello scrappers and planet lovers. This video will answer the question as to why magnetrons from microwaves can be dangerous if taken apart. Please scrap safely. Remember the little money mad from scrapping a magnetron is not worth the value of your health!

Its neat to hear you repeat to emphasize, its interesting to see how things are put together & little gems, inside underneath paint, thin metal plates, covers, etc. You're a good teacher Tin man, have a good one

Glad I could help. It is amazing how powerful these magnets are. I have given them to all my co-teachers to use in the classroom, as they are much stronger than the 9nes we are given by the school. Stay well and happy scrapping

Well im convinced im probably going to die due to beryllium poisoning now lol. I have micro scrapped at least 25 microwaves over the last year. In a not so well vented area. And i cant remember for the life of me what i may or may not have hammered, touched with bare hands or what have you. Dont think ill mess with microwaves anymore. Lol

if you don’t disturb the beryllium you are fine. as well, I have been told the newer ones don’t use beryllium because of cost, so that is good. Either way, hopefully this video helped.

hi m8 just catching up on your videos. Very true I've heard some horrible stories about magnatrons. nasty stuff if inhaled. beryllium is very nasty .a lot of the older model microwaves have the beryllium ceramic on them.the new ones have aluminium oxide in the ceramic still bad if inhaled. great video and very informative 👍

Ive read that a diamond tester measures thermal conductivity and can be used to test the ceramic insulators on a magnetron to see if they are made out of beryllium.

A little over cautious, yes you may find that Beryillium was used in high powered Industrial microwave generators, decades ago, it is very expensive, it’s dangers are well known, your magnetron would have a highly visible warning sticker, you won’t see them in Domestic microwaves in the last 30 years, but yes be aware of dangers, your far more at risk from the capacitor if still holding a charge. Be on the safe side don’t break em. But don’t be scared to death of em
@TinManScrapper

I think we need to be cautious of all hazards when scrapping. Actually, my research has shown that beryllium labels do not have to be shown!! As well, some microwave companies still may use beryllium. I do agree with you that capacitors can be dangerous as well from the charge.

Magnatron don't hold charge but the capacitor does
@TinManScrapper
@TinManScrapper 3 жыл бұрын
Capacitors are what you have to be careful of. They are the aluminum cylindrical vials that have wire connected to them. They say microwaves can hold a small charge for a week or more even after the microwaves are off. I wait a little while before disassembling the microwaves. I have never been shocked and taken apart almost 75 microwaves, but still don.t take any chances.

Another video claims the beryllium is contained not within the ceramic posts but within the connection tips where the 2 coils of copper meets the one post that electrifies the magnetron.

When I was a kid I completly smashed open a scrap microwave in my dads back yard with a cinder block. I remember the capacitor looking like a cars muffler and found it interesting, not know what it was. The magnetron was also neat, reminded me of the power sub stations around town. I proceeded to smash each component with mentioned cinderblock and bricks until my dad whooped my ass telling me how dangerous microwave were and that shouldn't have been doing that. Now I know why lmao

I bought a magnetron from Amazon. Came in two boxes in 2 days. The first box from with the amazon label was fine but the second in which the device was lying had a hole in the box and the core was damaged. The ceramic ribbon was shaking. It is still dangerous if ribbon was broken few days ago?
@TinManScrapper
@TinManScrapper 5 ай бұрын
if the ceramic is crushed it is if the dust particles are in the box and released once you open the box.

When scrapping as is, can it be mixed in with my copper barring motors?
@TinManScrapper
@TinManScrapper 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! I would say no since the warning label, but I could also say yes because there is no separate price/category for magnetrons.. I would have in separate pile and bring in with copper bearing motors. If already separated, the people at the yard can either weigh separate or put together. If you have them already mixed, they may give as dirty load and lower price.
