The Dangers of Hospice. What You NEED to Know if You Have a Tracheostomy Tube and Ventilator

Hospice care is designed to help those individuals who have six months or less to live to be given comfort care and other end-of-life services. However, many hospice care plans are not transparent when explaining which services will and will not be covered such as if a person has a tracheostomy tube and uses a ventilator will the person be allowed to continue using these medical devices. I have heard many heart-breaking stories from family members who feel as though they were deceived when signing a loved up for hospice because hospice was not fully explained to them. #lifewithavent #hospicecare #trach #ventilator

I am sorry that happened to them!! And it must have been scary for you to hear that. I am a hospice nurse. I can assure you that we have patients who remain on their ventilator. It is important to have "goals of care" conversations with the medical staff. There should NEVER be a change in the care without patient/family consent! Please know that their situation was specific to that hospice. It was the exception - not the rule. Thank you for your videos! They are informative and life affirming!! I really enjoy your spirit!!

I do not understand why Hospice would not tell the family what would be involved by entering Hospice like taking their family member off of the ventilator? When they had the family meeting with the medical staff I wonder what was discussed? Apparently Not Anything about taking the person life? The only thing I could think of is the family thought this is just a medical facility to treat their love one with their medical condition. For Me I always knew Hospice does not treat illness. Hosptial Hospice is not a good at all for they try to force it on you without your consent espeicallly when it is not needed and the person is still alive and functioning.

In hospice, plans are supposed to be created and agreed upon by the patient and family. However, if the patient is not able to communicate (such as the patient in the story in this video), many times the hospice program does not feel the need to discuss anything with the family because they feel as though they have been give the right to do as they please.

My dad went to hospice, we could only choose to receive or deny "comfort care" which could not include anything that would extend his life. So he lost his TPN but he could still get breathing treatments, since those just made him more comfortable. His power of attorney was the one who decided what care he got, and what care he didn't. That was his brother, whose job proudly is- declining medical treatments for a large insurance provider as a cost saving approach. He has a business degree not a medical degree. He'd laugh about denying patients with cancer treatment as my dad was dying of it. The whole thing was very disturbing. I do know as the body is shutting down, fluid overload from IVs can be an issue when the kidneys and heart have failed. But whether each treatment increases the patient's comfort as they transition to death should be the priority.

There's palliative care, the family should've been educated more on options. But family are going through a hard time already with taking in all the information thrown at them and it can be overwhelming 😢. It's a sad story you told. Hospice can be an incredible resource for people, but it also depends if you have true compassionate people that work there.

They told me anything considered life support.. like, my hubs has a j tube feeding tube and they wouldnt necessarily pull it out but did say they would not buy him food.. i said im not starving him to death.. its a year later and he is still here..

I never knew this! Unless there is a loophole, it seems hospice isn't an option for those of us who are vent dependent. I would hope their is something similar that could keep vent dependent individuals comfortable who have a terminal illness. Many people with disabilities are vent dependent years before being deemed terminally ill.

Complete in Jesus I Love your User Name and Yes we are Complete in Him. Hospice is not for people who are vent dependent for they will take you off of it. Here is a place which is Palliative care that would help vent dependent which attends to the physical function psychological of serious illness. It is a person and family centered approach to care providing people living with serious illness relief from the symptoms and stress of an illness. I Hope this answer helps you.
