I live in a very rural area in south central Pennsylvania, and one of the small town cemeteries here is really sad. It sits on top of a hill, and they have widened the road so much that the tombstones on the edge are going to topple down the hillside with even a small amount of erosion. A lot of them are very old markers.

This story is horrifying! Imagine watching your husband and father shot to death in front of you. Shot repeatedly. My heart breaks for his family. I was foolish and naive enough to think that the mafia used other ways to force people to do their bidding. My dad tried to stop a group of thieves from stealing televisions from rooms at Ramada Inn in Chicago where he was a security guard. I guess they told him to mind his own business but he continued to try to stop them. When he came home that morning he was beaten and bruised. This was about 1967. My mom and I were sobbing as we tended to his wounds. He was about 63 years old and he was trying to pick up extra money. Breaks my heart still. He died in 1970.

@20:06 I think those are the original headstones because they're granite, which doesn't wear down over time the way markers made from softer stone does. I've seen plenty of granite headstones from the 1870's, 1880's, etc that look almost brand new.

When I lived in Milwaukee in the 70s after moving from Illinois I remember meeting a guy whose last name my Fazio. Apparently his dad was involved in the mob. He was very good friends of my baby's God father who was a Milwaukee police detective. Funny how your story just jogged my memory. I haven't thought of any of them in years. I was honestly disappointed in seeing that tree growing up thru the monument. Seems to me the cemetery custodian wasn't very diligent in caring for the lawns.

Some of my wife's family's markers from that era have stood the test of time like the ones at the end of the video. It's possible they are original. Thank you Ron for your great videos and your time your gas your research and your kind and warm personality. But I would like to say that I think the same as you that people get lost to time families run out of members they pass away in other states or they move and after several generations the original people are forgotten maybe not really forgotten just not known. It's a strange feeling to think that we're here on Earth for a short time and that's where faith comes in for those that believe as I do I hold on steadfast to the fact that we are only visitors here for a very short time as I'm sure most people that take the time to think understand. I do find it interesting that some of the most rotten people do live longer is it true " Only the Good Die Young". Maybe we should add only the good and the innocent.

Kentucky was a neutral state and Kentuckians went to Illinois and Iowa to enlist in the Illinois militia which was forced into the US Army. A lot of mid westerners favored their own secession from the United States but Lincoln came down hard on their leaders and banished many to Canada, not to return to their home states.

The appearance of the headstones in the Chicago Waiter's Association highlights the reason I'm being cremated when my time finally comes. I don't want someone seeing my crappy looking, dilapidated old stone no one is looking after a century after I'm gone because to me it is just pitiful. I would rather be completely forgotten for eternity than be represented by such a stone.
