And now Danny will be performing 80s King Crimson with Tony Levin and Adrian Belew! So excited for this, CAN'T WAIT!

Wow, this is one of the best vids youtube has spit out in a loooong time. Tool - 1997 - right on their way to peak of their career. Absolutely awesome

You can really hear the King Crimson influence on Tool when he plays the song in the CD player at 3:17.

@bradleymurphy7 High five! I recorded this from television onto VHS back in 1997, so it was about time to share it for good causes.

Woah, what a gem. Thanks for sharing this with us. Indeed, KC's Discipline was very innovative and great to hear Danny's thoughts on it.

Goddamn, Thanks for the post dude! That cd he just poped in sounds tasty, and you can really tell where his style and influence comes from. I'd be delighted if Danny ever came out with a solo album :D
@drewper7313 жыл бұрын
I could always tell he was influenced by Bill Bruford just by listening to his drumming and sure enough he pulls out King Crimson's "Discipline" cd. If you've never heard "Discipline," "Beat," or "Three of a Perfect Pair" by King Crimson then you need to go out and find them or order them online. Great drumming by Bruford. Also has Adrien Belew, Robert Fripp, and Tony Levin. Highly recommended if you like Tool. It's just a different kind of "heavy" than Tool.

Bass tone in the beginnings amazing if you listen closely. Just has that midrange crunch.

Tony Levin is a terrific player with a great tone, but his tone in this song, Discipline, is especially tasty.

@Insid15 That's a good point. I could still listen to them while watching the DVD. I've seen them twice and they put on a great show which is why I'd like to see a well-produced live DVD to relive those experiences and rewind/pause the moments that blow my mind. You're definitely right about them not showing off at their concerts. The 1st time I saw them Maynard was right up front, but the 2nd time in 2001, he was back and to the left. All you could see was his silhouette. Maybe 1 of these days.

By the way, the docu might have aired in 1997 but the live recordings have been made in the fall of 1996. I've looked it up at Tool's tour journal.

@eyeronman87 well it's a 3/2 signature, alternating at most points between the feet and the hands. Looks to me like a soundcheck, because you should always play every feature of the kit when doing so.

A beginner plays a beat, a professional backs up the other musicians by following thier playing with the drums. A great player does that and plays a melody aswell

His description of Discipline always puzzles me...he says the drums are in 15 though I am pretty sure they are in 17. I am very hesitant to say he is wrong, being the incredible musician he is, but can anyone explain why he says this when even Bruford said it is in 17?

@bigburnsbiss1 I'm with you, but I'd rather see a well-produced DVD concert. The only DVD stuff from Tool I've ever seen is "unauthorized." I've seen them live twice. I know they could put out an awesome live DVD but for some reason they haven't.
