Correct. But “in the early days” isnt really correct. They were anonymous for 30 years mostly. They did do occasional short interviews but it was usually Maynard being sarcastic. I love hearing someone finally differentiate the voice from the other instruments. People will slag an aging singer all day long while praising how the guitar player still has his tone. An instrument is not going to diminish the same way a a singer’s voice will. And you can always update or buy a new instrument, whereas the singer’s instrument is his/her body. No one ever points that out; here it is in this interview.

Tool has absolutely saved my life. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 22, now 41, and even though I am a functional idiot when it comes to music, Tool has resonated with me since my teenage years in the 90s before I even realized it would be my lifeline to a normal feeling. Whenever I crash into my depression and am at my worst I turn on Tool and just listen for as long as it takes till I come out of it. Danny is the greatest drummer and pairing that with Maynard's vocals just allow me to find the spark I need to continue when I don't think I can. And I don't want to overlook Adam and Justin with what they bring but Danny and Maynard have always stuck with me over the years. I am so happy in this day and age through KZbin and the internet at large, I get to learn more about the quartet who I owe so much too. I lost one of my best friends to suicide and we loved to listen to Tool together, with Ænima and The Pot being our two favorites to jam to. I have continued on for him and for our love of this band for years whenever I didn't think I could. I don't know if this true but I heard a while ago the band said the name can mean many things but they can be (I am paraphrasing) whatever tool that you need in that moment no matter what you are going through. I thank you for my life Danny, Justin, Adam, and Maynard.

I feel that mixing argument even though I’ve never been involved in it myself. I don’t like how compressed recordings often are. Just a drone, very congested. Drums need some room to punch through. Not much of an issue if you have a quick attack so you just punctuate the mix without interfering much in between notes. But those spikes need headroom which a ‘hot’ mix precludes. It doesn’t help that Tool is basically a fight in the lower register, despite not having that many parts. I’m thinking about the older records. You can definitely hear a change with _Ænima._ Before then they had more bombast with a strange trebly edge. More aggressive musical style, too. I wonder if that was mastered with pre-emphasis and now released in that form without the playback adjustment. _Lateralus_ was apparently initially HDCD despite dynamics using a tiny fraction of a CD’s range. _10,000 Days_ went crazy with regular clipping. _Fear Inoculum_ has come down a bit again.

Unfortunately "content creators" 🙄 are slaves to the algorithm and the race. There are a lot of people who are popular on KZbin who when the reach the upper echelon feel they need to keep their numbers up and then they start doing clickbait titles. I think Rick seems to be experimenting with it and he's not as bad as many others out there but he does do it. I enjoy his stuff, and I don't think his clickbait interests, but I do hope he stops doing it. Clearly his stats are showing he gets more views when he does it or he wouldn't do it. But at 5 mil viewers he really doesn't need to anymore

Saw them earlier this year in LA and they played Flood. Was an experience

Tool has a sound all their own very few can create that or have the skill. They had more influence on music then many bands will ever admit.

Neil Peart said once ‘Playing a Rush concert is hard’ Mr. Carey has a great job, but it is not easy. 🤘

Danny Carey is sick to watch live! He's a blur back there killing it. That's who I watched when I saw them in Louisville

He is so kind about what Maynard would be comfortable singing after all these years.

I don't understand why bands don't release in a format where the listener can choose different weighted mixes. I'd love to be able to isolate / turn-up the drums on all of Tool.

I’ve watched these segments with Maynard and Danny, both are very interesting, and I love hearing about their process. The sleeper is Adam, have you tried getting with him?

When I worked in bands we would group 3 songs together, like cars, girls, jobs or 3 songs from ZZTop or Loverboy or Tubes. We would play the 3 and then talk about the bar, tip the waitress (and when your done tipping return them to the upright position), try the Veal(hehe). And in order to break the 'same songs same order' we would mix the group of 3's, and of course, requests had to be writing (ledgible) on the back of a $100 bill ;-)
