In this video essay, I discuss why I connect to Wes Anderson's underrated gem, The Darjeeling Limited.

I do not own the films from which I show clips in this video. All clips are used to demonstrate points in the video, which is a review/critique/analysis and does not present the film in its entirety. The clips are edited to short portions of the films and most feature narration on top of them -- they are used to make points about the film. The analysis is for the purpose of commentary and criticism about the films, which makes it Fair Use by both KZbin and Federal Copyright Law standards.

I know this movie is usually at the bottom of most people's Wes Anderson lists, but something about it just rings so true to me. Different sibling dynamic - I'm an older sister with only a younger brother - but I dunno, it's one of my favourites for sure. This is a great video; I'm glad to see how much your channel is growing!

Thanks for sharing! I've definitely been curious about how well this resonates with other people not in this same sibling structure, like I alluded to in the video, but most people have it towards the bottom of their lists, like you said haha. So it definitely encourages me to know you're able to get something out of it too!

Amazing Essay. One thing I would like to add is Francis is the way he is because of his mother. When we meet the mother, we see that she has the same controlling/overbearing methods that we have seen Francis use, like "Can we all agree on that" and ordering for everybody. This to me means that since a young age, Francis has been noticing the abandonment and absence of his mother and trying to fill in the hole for his siblings. And of course, the way she behaves is the way Francis assumes every adult behaves and should behave and hence he becomes overbearing. Francis was clearly hit hardest by the absence of their mother because probably he was the only one old enough to understand and then desperately trying to not let his siblings feel the same thing. This is also why he is the one who plans to meet their mother, because clearly everyone knows that there is something missing and Francis thinks it is the presence or at least closure from their mother. This is also why he seems to have abandonment issues and steals the passports as he is afraid of people leaving because of his mother.

Your essay is spot on, caught myself saying 'this!!' and stuff like that. The way you put into words why the trust and sibling relationship between the brothers is amazingly done, is perfect

I love this movie and this video essay does it justice, almost more then any other video I’ve seen on it. Definitely Wes Anderson’s most underrated movie.

Thank you for your commentary! I love that movie soooo much, probably watched it 200 times, but i feel like every time I'm watching it I'm noticing a new detail. Your video got me thinking of the things I've missed so far, so definitely a lot to think of - for the next time of watching this master piece, that has so many layers.

Wow… just wow. Almost cried watching this video. It’s always been my favorite movie since watching it for the first time. But after watching this, it adds a even thicker layer of depth to how I feel about this movie.

I only have one brother and he’s the oldest; I’m the youngest. We’re split by 8 years and two sisters. He saved me from drowning when I was two years old and nearly died in the process. Generally, we were never close but stuff like this always makes me grateful I had a brother at all.

Wow, I really loved this commentary, it made me appreciate this movie so much more, and put into words questions I was struggling to answer myself, especially concerning long distance relationships with siblings and cousins and such. Growing up separately can make you become strangers to each other with seemingly nothing in commun to share, and that used to distress me (I can easily identify with Owen Wilson's caracter in this movie lol) But siblings aren't friends, they're family, and it's another bond of it's own, with just as much love and trust if not more. I just love how you tapped into that theme so well here, thank you! (Hope this video blows up)

This is really good! It feels very natural and honest, and I agree with all of what you said. It's presented very straightforward and concise, but still interesting. I hope it gets some more attention :)

This movie was just OK to me, although I did go to see it in the theater when it was out. I think that my favorite Wes Anderson movie will always be The Royal Tenenbaums. Movies about family dynamics (what's Eating Gilbert Grape, C.R.A.Z.Y.) are one of my preferred types of movie.
