Just gorgeous, lucky to see them in the UK when they toured a while back and they were fabulous. Such a great song writing team and Dan has a wonderful soulful voice.

George Esau / Dan Penn no one can sing the song better than James Carr. Personally, Dan’s cover of his song Dark End... is outstanding.

Hard to call this a cover when Dan Penn was one of the guys that wrote it. I love almost all versions of this song. Percy Sledge did it well also.

Margaret Ross Yeah... The FBB did a pretty fine version also. But in my mind, nobody can take it to the stratosphere like Carr & Penn. There are some songs that that should have a very strong vetting process before they are covered. Considering all the damage Michael Bolton inflicted on us many years ago.

I noticed another version by Gregg Allman with a caption (One of Duane's favorite songs). Wondering if Duane was working on it with Dan and Spooner back in the day. I don't remember who cut it first. I assume it was done at FAME.

Ha! I like this song. And as the story goes , Dan and Chips Momo were drinking and cheating at cards one night with some old buddies from Muscle Shoals , when they were challenged to write the ultimate cheatin song. They borrowed a hotel room and had it done in 30 minutes, lyrics and all. James Carl took it as his signature song. Two other really good versions are the 1991 Commitments soundtrack with then 16 year old Andrew Strong singing lead and Maria Doyle Kennedy one of the backing vocals , and the version by Jimmy Barnes from his 2016 release Soul Searchin, in which Dan contributes backing vocals . As an aside, it's really interesting to watch that video of Dan singing the backup dressed in a pair of comfortable worn bib overalls.
