I'm glad that Howard and Lovecraft were pen pals. Eldritch horror would fit seamlessly into sword and sorcery anyway, but the fact that Howard intentionally tried to mimic some of Lovecraft's style in his early works makes it slot even more nicely.

Thank you! The lore videos are some of the most enjoyable to make, though of course they take significantly longer 😂 Nevertheless, I'm always glad that people enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them!

I remember a quest in age of conan about a madness overtaking an entire coastline. Villagers just walking into the sea at night of their own will while sining a song. Might be one of those elder gods influence. But I have a question. How come the Lemurian, sailing west made it to modern day stygia(relativly speaking modern day) and at the time the land of the Khari when you have Khitai right beside Lemuria? If you sail due west from Lemuria, you are going to land almost 100% in Khitai. It would only make sense if the Lemurian Island were due west of Stygia, Shem and Dafar but maybe i'm overthinking it

Nyarlathotep is officially all over the world in Age of Conan. You end up meeting him in Dragon's Spine. After finishing a long quest called "The Crawling Chaos" he reveals who he is by name. He brags about how he has been behind several big events in the game. Like the corruption of the Emperor of Khitai, and the summoning of Yog Sothoth's avatar in House of Crom (an Atlantean outpost now mostly buried and it's people destroyed by Yog Sothoth). He flat out tells you that he is Nyarlathotep (He is in a human form at that time) He then puts the player to sleep and you wake up in the Dreamlands, specifically on the plateu of Leng. And he has been messing with a sorceror named Cetriss in the Palace of Cetriss. It's a follow up story by Funcon that follows the novel "Conan and the Emerald Lotus" that features Nyarlathotep. 🙂 Oh, and the players can actually fight the avatar of Yog Sothoth in a 24 man raid and banish it to the void where it comes from. Age of Conan is packed with Lovecraft material. There is also a serpent man city where the Shining Trapezohedron is part of the game. It's literally part of a fight with a Serpent man boss and the players sees vision of how the Serpent men stopped following their God Yig and instead prayed to Nyarlathotep who gifted them the Shining Trapezohedron. Oh and the avatar of Yig also appears and he is pissed with his children and humans too 🙂 and Dagon is being worshipped in a fishing village in Khitai. In house of Crom there is a dungeon where the players ends up fighting a spawn of Yog Sothoth. the House of Crom story is funcom's Conan version of the Dunwich horror by Lovecraft. Also in House of Crom we can read tablets talking about Nyarlathotep and how he has walked the face of earth since the beginning of everything and how he gives people "gifts" that tend to destroy the reciever. And in House of Crom you can listen to ghosts singing a lullaby about Cthulhu sleeping in his sunken city. Basically Age of Conan is full of Lovecraftian content. Unfortunately AOC never managed to be a big hit so only nerds like myself who has played the game for 10+ years have experienced all this lore and done the raids and dungeons where you can fight some of these things.

I love that Conan is in the Lovecraft universe and also the Marvel universe. The Crawling Chaos is no joke though.

I know it's an enrage mechanic to ensure players can exit even if the dungeon glitches, but in my head canon the blood moon beast that shows up to one-shot you and your thralls if you spend too long in Kurak's Lair is the result of his summoning. No coincidence that it looks very Eldritch.

It could very much be interpreted as such, it ties in very well thematically and with the design of trying to stop Kurak just as he's on the cusp of success

I unfortunately never played Age of Conan, I don't think it would 100% be my sort of experience, but the lore seems to be just as interesting from what I've heard. Thanks for letting me know!

@@Eradicati0nn Sure thing. I could keep rambling as I just gave you the short version. I never played mmo's until I got sucked into AOC. Later I discover all these awesome things playing the game. But yes, it is a classic WOW like game from 2008. And now it's pretty much dead. And most of these cool things can only be experienced in groups of 6 players or 24 man raids. And then you realize that most of the playerbase even when it was more active did not care at all for this lore and quest stories. I just happened to be a longtime Lovecraft fan and Conan fan so all this made me so happy when playing AOC. I still do a couple of raids a week just because reasons. Conan exiles is sadly not my type of game but I wish it was because I have noticed your lore videos and other people talking about the Lovecraftian stuff in Exiles. I have enjoyed Exiles on the sideline I guess. Praise Funcom for making so many stories and lore that I love.

Praise Yog, another video about Lovecraft references in Conan. Also, The Nameless City in Exiles whether intended or not is also a story from H.P Lovecraft, albeit i think the inhabitants were crocodile men instead of snakes in the story.

I believe nyarlathotep was able to turn some of it's worshippers into demons, I really wish they included him in exiles as a god to worship and the "avatar" mechanic was instead replaced with turning your character into a demon and gaining some sort of benefits more than likely corruption based. Or as a ritual for sorcery. It would have just been so cool, and if they made it replace the avatar function, they could also allow you to break down enemy base doors at least or maybe walls too if the transformation is time limited. Imagine having a agility, grit, and expertise build, but then you also gain full corruption bonuses of authority, strength, and vitality aswell after the transformation?

There are also a lot of Clark Ashton Smith references in the game. There are mini-bosses in the Volcano named "emissary of Atlach-Nacha, Haon-Dor and Abhoth", which are gods from his Hyperborea stories. The whole plot about serpent-men being refugees in a volcano also originates from him. Liu Fei mentions a demonic entity named Mezzamalech, who is a sorcerer from Smith's short story "Ubbo-Sathla".

Yeah CAS gets folded into the game a few times, I read The Seven Geases when I was trying to find out more about the amber bracelets. I'll have to do a video about him at some point too, I found his writing pretty compelling

I covered it a lot more in the Dreamlands video last week, I wanted this to more introduce the theory and then Nyarlathotep's connection as opposed to properly deep-dive it and drag the video out 😂

The lore is incredibly deep and really open to theory-crafting. A lot of it ends up hidden, or at least harder to find, just based on how the devs chose to write and display the story. I'd say that makes it even more gratifying to discover though. I only put 2 & 2 together about Ghura's horn when making this video, despite having already covered the Sacred Hunt lore months ago 😂

Whoever this guy is man he’s creepy and reminds me of Apocalymon from Digimon! A dark master in the works in the background influencing and giving its power to digimon to have them do his bidding. He crosses over a “firewall” through the ancient pyramids and when he appears he is able to use the same attacks of the digimon who the kids had best
