In the 70s, The Runaways helped break open the door for women in rock and roll but the effort cost them a lot.
This is the story of the all-girl rock group and all of the darkness that surrounded them.

I tried editing and uploading this video five different ways but UMG kept blocking it. So I got annoyed and let KZbin mute the song. That's why it's all weird around 7:30. Also, I admit I did a bad job in the end and kind of combined the Waitin for the Night and And Now The Runaways albums into one section. I should've detailed that a bit more. I blame being sick.

The Runaways are profoundly underappreciated, they were and will always be teen angst personified.

I can't listen to the Runaways, but enjoy Joan Jett and Lita Ford's solo music to a degree. Yeah the backstory is very sad.

My introduction to The Runaways was the movie that came out in 2010 with Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. It's been a (very) long time since I've seen it, but before that I knew next to nothing about the band. I consider them to be an important group, especially within the LA Punk scene. With that said, though, It's a really sad story. These girls were failed time and time again by the adults that were supposed to protect and care for them. And what makes it even worse is that they couldn't do that for themselves. This is a great video, as always. Keep up the good work. P.S. Get well soon!

@@soundofhistory_ At least once, yes. The movie itself is ok. It kind of serves as a general overview of The Runaways story without getting into too much of the disturbing parts of it (at least from what I remember). It's based on Cherie's Memoir, "Neon Angel." So, much of it is from her perspective. In fact, she and Joan Jett have the most screentime in the movie. So, be prepared for that. Also, they had to write a character for Jackie Fox, since she didn't want to release the rights to her likeness, which I don't blame her given all she's been through in her time with the band. All that said, I think it's something worth checking out just to see. P.S. You're welcome!

Fowley was closer to 40 when he ‘created’ the Runaways, and maybe even creepier than Malcomb McLaren with Bow Wow Wow.

Thank you so much for this! I was just a couple of years younger than them. I'm just now studying a lot of famous people. I missed out on the details bc I was out in the bar partying every night & didn't watch TV or read magazines then. This was extremely interesting to me.

I first heard of Kim Fowley when he was co-writing songs with Skip Battin in the early 1970s while Battin was with the Byrds. I take it that the lyrics were Fowley's department, as Battin's singing was always mixed (usually) below the level of the guitars on those tracks. Battin was a very proficient player. I started learning how much of a creep he was in the mid-to-late 1990s.

Jackie wasn’t playing on their first because of Kim.The *ape occurred within a month of her joining the band. She had been drugged before the event took place. Kim knew he had stepped over the line with what he did to Jackie so he claimed she wasn’t ready to play on the album when he really didn’t want to have to face her. The others have their versions of what happened of course. It’s sad that they didn’t step in but they were young and probably didn’t know how to deal with it. And, of course, they were probably pretty out of it themselves. The version of Jackie not being allowed to play on the first album came from Jackie herself.

There was a news article maybe a year ago that Kari Krome was suing the estate of Kim Fowley seeking reparations for work she did - lyrics to Cherry Bomb or portions of it - and she was not paid. How did this turn out?

Bought that first album back in late '76 when I was 13. Didn't know much about them but I had read some good stuff in Rock Scene so thought I'd give them a try. Thought it was a great album, up there with my new favorite band at the time, The Ramones. And yes, we all hate Kim Fowley.

Foley was a Bad Un but what about all the hundreds or thousands of sweaty blokes at least 5 years older gawping at them ? These were 1970s rock & metal fans after all & i bet half of them weren’t expecting Steve Hackett dexterity from the guitarist & didn’t care . As Frank Z would say “ nasty nasty nasty…”

@19:02 you say, "It's worth noting that Joan and Cherie don't exactly agree with Jackie's version of those events," to which I would add it's worth noting they apparently don't agree with Kari Chrome's version either.
