Back in the early mid 90's it was said that insurance companies paid dcnr to release coyotes to lower deer population. Why is it so far fetched to think Mt lions are in Pennsylvania? I would believe an avid hunter over the average Joe. 1. Hunters go where most don't. 2. Hunters are out from before sunrise to after sunset. They will see more wild life in a day than the average person will see in a year. Loved this video. Great job😊
@YoungGunLoaded2 ай бұрын
hunters blame the dcnr for the coyotes, this is untrue, part of the blame is on hunters themselves. We killed off PA's top predators over the course of our history, which made way for the coyote to expand at a rapid pace. One can look back over the past one hundred years or so, and see how they slowly "invaded" the east coast. there is no conspiracy here, it is just poor management of our ecosystem here in PA. Humans are a poor substitue for a wolf or a cougar when it comes to the coyotes population control.

Had a friend who recently passed. He was an attorney. He was also at one time a Pa Game Commissioner. I asked him about mountain lions and he said, "It is the Game Commission's position that the Pa. mountain lion's were extinct." I asked him about clear evidence that has been presented. His response was, "If there were mountain lions in Pa. and I'm not saying there are, then they would be put on the endangered species list and the Pa Game Commission would need to manage them. The cost of that would be a huge portion of our annual budget and take away from our other programs. Thus it is the Pa. Game Comm. position that the Pa. mountain lion is extinct." Answered like a true attorney and pretty clear to me. Take it for what it is worth...

Thanks for this story. This is the first good reason that I have heard for the PA Nat. Resources Dept. to deny the presence of Mountain Lions here. This is a believable reason. I had extensive measurements of tracks, casts and hair, but lost them in a house fire. I did not tell people because I was afraid that some gun happy people would shoot them. Locals "contain" the troublesome bears, even when they are young and small. The young bears get into things but nobody can claim that they are dangerous, but they disappear anyway . This is my fear concerning the big cats.

All I'll say is I'm 70 years old, and decades ago, before my grandfather passed away, my family owned a hunting cabin in Cameron County Pennsylvania. While the family was there one summer in the late sixties, some of us heard the screaming or screeching sound that everyone has heard in the movies, which always went along with a good-sized cat. My uncle (my mother's sister's husband) actually got so angry with me that he began shouting at me when I suggested it might be a cougar. He didn't laugh or just try to correct me. He got hostile. If you know anything about the Cameron, Potter, Elk County area of North Central Pennsylvania, you know that it's very heavily forested, mountainous and very sparsely populated, and much more so in the 1970s and earlier than today. My wife and I live in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Which can in no way be compared to the country in North Central Pennsylvania in its topographical make-up. Several years ago, a friend of my wife took a photograph of a cougar lying on a picnic table in their backyard. This happened near New Brighton PA. It looked to be adolescent or young adult. It was not a bobcat. It's tail was as long as it's torso. My question is, why do people like my late uncle have such visceral reactions to this topic? I have seen a couple of things that would be considered far more out of the realm of possibility than the possibility of the existence of mountain lions in Pennsylvania?

A friend and I saw one in 2000 while hiking on the other side of Long Pine Run Reservoir. It got within 75 yards of us on the road as it followed us. It may have been the same one. I grew up on a farm with a bobcat on the property. I saw it pretty frequently. What we saw was almost waist high and had a long tail. It was also colored like a typical mountaiin lion, without the bobcat ear tufts. I work in wildlife conservation and I know the difference between the two. I knew well enough at the time to grab my friend when he tried to run, because of what it was. I also wasn't anticipating such an animal being out there, so I didn't imagine it because it was what i wanted to see. My only goal was to not get attacked by a large cat that was intent on getting closer to us. The scariest part was when it darted into the woods along the road and we heard it running through the woods beside us, heading towards the 10 foot high ridge on that side of the road, ahead of us. At dusk.

In 2016 I was backpacking and on a seldom used cross connect trail between the STS and Black Forest trails. Very remote and mountainous as you well know. Following a long abandoned logging or rail grade up a vast ravine, I surprised a large mountain lion (yes it had a tail) that seemed as though it was in the crouched position observing the valley below. As I came out of the undergrowth on my way uphill, it was as surprised as I was with the encounter. At a distance of 15 to 20 yards, it calmly got up and trotted up the trail and out of view. As I continued up the trail, I came to a large, rocky cliff face to my left that kept me on guard as I passed. I’m in my seventy’s now and have been backpacking north central PA twenty five years, have seen every form of wildlife it has to offer, including bobcats. I know what I saw. I don’t believe there’s a breeding population in Pennsylvania. There would be more evidence than an occasional sighting. I must say, the contact left me with chills for a good while. I always hike solo, and shrug off the risk involved, but that one had me a little rattled. Been following you for years. You are a calm in the storm. Thank you, and God bless you!

In reguards to this video about mountain lions, I don’t know about down where you live but in Bradford county many people have seen them. I saw a tan one in my backyard not fifty feet from me and a black one crossing the road at noon on a sunny day. Having been a Humane Police officer and traveling all over the county, I have seen bob cats up close too and these were not bobcats or house cats. There is also recent story of a farmer over the hill who kept missing sheep and the game commission insisted it was coyotes so he started putting the sheep in the barn at night. Well the next night he was missing another sheep. So he decided to lay in the hay loft all night. Sure enough, the mountain lion jumped over the gate and was going for another sheep when he shot it. The cat had an ear tag from the game commission in its ear. They supposedly paid him $10,000 to keep quiet about it but after several months everyone knew about it. The game commission never tells anyone about what they plan on releasing. Apparently it was some kind of deal with New York State where they got some other animal in exchange. But like I said I know at least ten people that have seen them and definitely know what they are looking at besides my own sightings. So if I were you I would be careful when hiking alone. So far they seem to be able to find plenty to eat and don’t need to hunt humans. Unfortunately there may come a day when one is old or injured and decides catching a person is easier than running down a rabbit or deer. I personally think it’s irresponsible of the game commission to not admit they are here so people can be adequately prepared when hiking or hunting. Anyway, please be careful out there. 😊

Park Rangers admitted to chasing off mountain lions a few times a year in Fayette County and family of mine has seen them twice, in McKean and Westmoreland counties. The assumption for why the official line is that they don't exist is the money. The woods might be perceived as more dangerous. which could curb hunting and hiking, plus they would be a new endangered species in the state, mandating funds to preserve them.

My vote on the mystery clip would be that it was the back legs of a bear. Slow the video all the way down, you can get a good look at it. It was hard to tell the first 2 clips since the animal was wearing a mask. 😅 here in NC fish and game departments have to investigate a sighting if its not a usually animal. Our coyotes are the size of exlarge dogs. They should be the size of medium dogs. We probably have a wolf or dog coyote highbred. If they would catch one and it was a wolf highbred it would help to add to the gene pool for red wolves. Keep going with the trail cams, ive been using 6 on my land for four years. Its a blast to see what you get.

that last clip to me looked like a persons leg or maybe arm id think if it was an animal you'd see more than one leg walking past it or and. this is a long shot it could be a ghost

most certainly, there are all types of big cats and wolfes in pennsylvania....pumas and timber wolves even. they travel from ohio in vehicles and dropped off in our wilds. unfortunately, ohio laws let people buy these animals, and they realize they can't take care of them. 2 wolves were trapped after the last rainbow gathering in the ANF, both in very poor shape as they were not wild and never learned to hunt.

If you were still hunting your way in it would take substantially longer to walk in.

Hi from western North Carolina! The Powers that be deny that there are mountain lions in this area when us regular folk know they are. My friend lives near the base of Standing Indian mountain in Macon county and has a photo of one sleeping on his picnic table on a hot August afternoon. I personally believe they are all over the east coast and that they are not transitory. But what do we know???

I saw something i couldnt explain while deer hunting. To this day i say mountain lion. Cant prove it. Have had some state police buddies say there was a auto wreck up route14 and the game commision wouldnt let the troopers to close. Across the hill from me the locals say there was a pair this year. All the sudden the game mission is hanging out there in that area. This is all in lycoming county. Guess all the extra doe permits arent enough for the insurance company folks
