Facinating video. I have seen her name a couple of times in my reading re ancient Rome (which I have always found fascinating) in relation to the Punic Wars but never her whole story. Tho I never believed that the Romans sowed the soil in Carthage with salt becaise salt was rare & expensive during that period in history, and it wold have taken a ridiculous ammount of salt to do the job. I think it's just a literary flourish. We will probably never know.

From the time I could first read as a child, I've had my head in books , magazines, newspapers - you name it and I had my nose in it ! Especially when it come to history and people & civilizations that came before us... I thank you for telling the story of this unique woman, this is the first time I knew anything about her story, and now I need to discover more about her situation! I'm sure that it was common knowledge as to the controlling, superior minded nature of the Romans.. they weren't known for their upright moral character, in spite of the facade they put forth.Im not so sure that I would chose what lay in store for her ..at the very least a life of a slave with no dignity, various degrees and nature of abuses and degradation. She opted for a choice that was dignified and I respect that of her. You are so awesome!

Could you do a video about Sophonisba Anguissola? She was a great Renaissance painter I would have never known about if I hadn't read "Seeing Ourselves: Women's Self-Portraits." It would be great to also have a video about Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun. She was a court painter at the time of the French Revolution. And survived. According to the New World Encyclopedia: "Today she is generally regarded as the most famous woman painter of the eighteenth century. However, she was unappreciated for many years, not only because of her association with the unpopular ancien regime, but also due to the fact that she competed in a field largely dominated by male artists and their patrons." Many thanks in advance!!

tbh i think she may have been downplayed in the 19th and 20th centuries as part of a broader move to suppress the importance of northern african cultures in what we consider classical studies. it's easier to be at a remove from dido's pain as an abstract fictionalised account and then continue on with one's imperial agendas unexamined than to come to grips with a real person who really died this way

Wonderful! I've never heard of this woman (like everyone else) If the depictions are accurate she was a beautiful lady. Carthage looked beautiful. I wouldn't have minded living there, before the Romans. As long as I was healthy and could live a semi comfortable life. The women's clothing was rather revealing but! Would have been freer than living a thousand years later in Europe in 800. Middle of the dark ages where the church ruled everyone's lives. (I'm no way religious) BTW BC is no longer in usage. Now known as BCE, before common era
