I know I've said it before, but it bares repeating: this is good. Apart from the research that must go into the commentary, it must take a massive amount of work to find the images you're using and then even more work to edit them into the vid to make it look so seamless. Colour me massively, massively, massively impressed.

Since Bram stoker utilized as many vampire Traditions as he could when writing, "Dracula," literally any vampiric case that occurred prior to 1897 could be construed as an inspiration for "Dracula," and has been. Giving her gender I'm inclined to consider that the princess, if she were an inspiration for any literary works, would be more likely to be associated with, "Carmilla," which predated Stoker's novel in publication by many years.

@@carolinasassenach8535 they found Bram stokers original notes for the novel some years back and sold them an auction. In them, you can actually see the point where stoker decided to name his King vampire Dracula. He practices writing it out several times and exchanging it for his earlier name for the vampire, and unimaginative Count Wampyr! If you haven't read the book Hollywood Gothic, get yourself a copy and the story of the original notes and their contents will be available for you in detail. Vlad Tepes is the only inspirational historical character who is mentioned in the notes for the novel, and stoker mentions also the real name of the real person who first told him about the 15th century wallachian Prince, arminius vanbury, whom Van Helsing speaks of as a close personal friend.

@@carolinasassenach8535 several literary critics have commented on the fact that although " Dracula is more powerful and horrific, the novelette, " carmilla, " by LeFanu is actually more atmospheric and erotic. It's publication in 1872 was a direct, although somewhat oblique, influence on Bram stoker's decision to write of a traveling vampire count.

In that time women knew "their place". They knew they would be used as a vessel to birth children, it was said marriage was a business of the riches, and women were a man's pawn. Rich women weren't required to have an education bc of their status and beauty. Kind of like today's "trophy wife". They would teach their daughters how to be the perfect a wife, bc one day her family would marry her off to a wealthy man, or put her in a prince's harem as a potential wife. This was practiced for centuries until the women's rights movement in the 90's. Some wealthy modern families still believe this, they send their daughters to a school of etiquette and marry her off. The men of the family will inherit the business or name.

Poor woman. Sold off in marriage by an ambitious father, to a resentful man who wanted to be with someone else. Her father then makes another advantages marriage and becomes her brother-in-law. Manages to find a way of getting on with her husband (and produce the essential heir), only for him to get shot by Royal friendly fire. When she finally gets a bit of more orderly & less stressful life cancer eats her alive. The villagers listening to her agonised screaming while telling vampire stories and sharpening their pitchforks! What a life. Beautifully delivered as always though. Thank you.

Both is wrong. Sheridan Le Fanu's Novel "Carmilla" was Stoker's main inspiration (besides from being inspired also by John Polidori's "The Vampyre"), he at first wanted to let his novel take place in Steiermark in Austria as well (as Sheridan Le Fanu's Novel does), but a friend of him, a historian, who knew a lot about Romanian history (and because of that, he of course knew about Vlad Țepeş) told him more about this country and Vlad and suggested that Bram Stoker's novel should take place in Romania, near Bistrița, so Stoker "placed" Dracula's castle near Pasul Tihuța; Vlad III Draculea became his historical precedent.

thank you for the video! it's really cool to see someone do such a well researched video on a bohemian noblewoman. great job pronouncing the slavic words it's really sad to see people pick a random historical figure and make them into a crazy devil worshipper or a vampire, but unfortunately it's really common to see here in central Europe. I don't really know why they keep doing it other than blowing things out of proportion for... attention? tourism's sake? I could name several czech and slovak cases (bathory and anna rosina listhius especially) like that from the recent years, it's really easy to take a tale and manipulate the image to suit our modern perceptions of vampiric tales since we don't really know about the common practices from those times

During those times, the elite often split their burial sites. To be more specific, and I hope I'm remembering correctly, the elite split their body's internment between their a family/spouse & a church they attended &/or contributed to. This way you honor your faith, duty and your loved ones. It's not too far a cry from how people today will split their cremated remains between an urn for display, or an ornament filled with ashes & having the rest scattered at place of significance to them.

Um that "documentary" sounds like bullshit. It sounds like they completely ignore Carmila and Erzabet Bathory. They also seem to ignore the fact that the use of Dracula, firmly cements Vlad the Third (nickname Dracula) as the inspiration for Dracula. Originally Bram Stoker had a different name for his lead vampire and a different title all together. But during his research for the book he came across the name Dracula and after delving further into the history of the man and of Transylvania he decided to change both the characters name and the title of his book to Dracula. There is no evidence at all to support the claims of this so called documentary.

I’ve never seen your face because I listen to your videos while I get ready (shower hairstyling and make up) and actually you remind me a lot of Elvis Presley. Anyway as always thanks for the great videos!

To explain a little further and thank you, I have a lot of anxiety and body dysmorphia so your videos help me get through getting ready. Instead of my head focusing on negative thoughts I’m able to listen to your words. :) genuinely thank you for your videos.

Wonderful work, thank you - I enjoy your channel often. But i have a remark concerning the portrait of Eleonora von Schwarzenberg that you are using as the main image - it's NOT the right Eleonore von Schwarzenberg. This lady is very clearly dressed and coiffed in the style of the 1830's, which is obviously more than a century later than our heroine. Seeing her every time you speak of Eleonore takes me out of the story..... The right Eleonore, seems to be the portrait you used as the still for your video. She's wearing the right clothes and hairstyle ;-) Thanks again for your great research and presentation. Keep up the good work!

I kept forgetting what her name was, so I couldn't find any information about her. Thank you for the video. I remember watching some documentary years ago about her, but I couldn't for the life of me remember anything about her, except her later life.

5:11. O_O So, that would make Eleonore's children both the first cousins and half-niece and half-nephew of their grandfather's children by his second wife (if he had any with her)... Good grief!

I heard it was Countess Bathory and Vlad the Impaler that gave Stoker his inspiration. Bathory was from an ancient powerful bloodline and they were from Transylvania. I guess both ladies could be a contender though… 🙂
