I played Overwatch a million years ago, but I got back into hero shooters recently due to Rivals I discovered your channel last month and I've been massively enjoying all of your old Overwatch content, even though I don't play it. It's really helped me understand how hero shooters work

One thing that I did not see get mentioned in the video is the rank gap in a match. For example, let's say you're gold 3 solo queueing. Now, for whatever reason, either because you get match with people who party queues or the matchmaker just decides it, you get put into a lobby where the average rank of the lobby is lower or higher than your rank. Your rank gain/loss will be affected by that. I've stacked with my lower rank friends and I'd lose more SR if I lose and win less if I win, but I've also stacked with my higher rank friends, and I'd lose less SR and gain more SR if I win. Looking at my history and checking how much RS everyone gains in my team after a win, the supports usually gets less RS than everyone else even with a better KDA ratio

I played around a plat level in OW but recently hit GM3 in rivals. Feels like the only reason I hit GM is because of the quantity of games i’ve played and have had more losses than wins as well.

I have a hypothesis. Because all players start at bronze 3 their is a compression of players that eases up over time. So if early on in the season you climb to a certain rank, say D3, then you continuously go about 50/50, you would actually slightly climb because your able to maintain your winrate even as better players filter out of low ranks. In a sense its like saying that D3 at the beginning of the season is easier than at the end of the season because players are filtered into their true ranks. Another way of looking at it is at what point does Marvel rivals give the same for a win as it does for a loss? Thats like the elo set point. Past that, pure consistency isnt rewarded anymore and you need to now have a greater than 50% winrate to climb. Another thing to think about, if you go 0w300L youre bronze 3. If you go 20W100L do you deserve bronze 3? Probably not. Maybe bronze 2. So we have a floor to how low skill rating can go but to sort out players RELATIVE to other players you could climb with a negative win rate. In other words, a 5% winrate and 30% winrate player in Bronze 3 do not both deserve to stay bronze 3.

I think the matchmaking works fine and heres why Im a GM dps player (6 accounts so far) and never struggle to get a new alt to at least Diamond 3, even on (most) new heros. If you say youre Diamond or GM and stuck in silver...you are either 1. Lying 2. Not playing enough games 3. Not trying hard enough 4. Playing a character thats so different from your mains that the skill set doesnt transfer. For ex. Im a Psylocke main. My black panther only account easily climbed to diamond 3 and then i got stuck. There are similarities between the heros so not a crazy gap. However my hawkeye only account soared easily to Gold 3 (14W0L) and then i struggled to get past G2/G1. The skill sets are too different and its requiring me to learn new ways of approaching my positioning, timing, etc. As well as increase the consistency of my aim. At the end of the day people like to complain, blame others, and point to outliers instead of admitting that their skill is variable, that sometimes you get unlucky, and that most of the time YOU are just as much a reason for the loss as your teammates. If you play better than the players around you (NOT JUST STAT FARMING, more VALUE) you will climb. The end.

Btw they dont make tin foio anymore its aluminum and aluminum is a receptor not a blocker so youre actually amplifying it and no theres no danger with electronics its what we used to put on rabbit ears ifor tv in the 90s

I think the root cause if the ideas surrounding MMR/win rate dont come from it being a 50/50 but rather from the way that 50/50 plays out. It isnt like 3 games win 3 games lose. It's the fact everyone regularly has a day theyre winning nearly all their games followed vy a day they lose all their games. Theres a very strong argument there for there being a winners qurue and losers queue. Edit: i think engagement based MM matters because it makes progression feel cheap. Id rather be a silver player because i belong in silver than be a plat player because i olayed 400 games

I just hit GM only solo Q with a 48.5% WR. I have played 300+ matches. While I do agree that more I am playing I’m going up because I’m getting more for win than I lose for losing. But I also have had higher win rates going through diamond and now into GM. So I don’t know when /if it will start evening out. I’d assume as long as I can keep my WR higher than 50 in my current games I’ll continue to climb.

As you get to the top end of the ladder you actually need a greater than 50% wi n rate just to maintain rank. Whereas at the lower end of the ladder you could have a win rate much lower than 50% and still climb.
